Chapter 8 - Vanessa Learns the Truth

Vanessa Cole entered Margaret Bennett's home at four twelve in the afternoon believing she was about to choose paint colors.

Daniel had told her the divorce would be finalized soon.

He had told her Claire had left voluntarily.

He had told her Claire refused direct communication because she was bitter about his new relationship.

Vanessa had accepted too much.

She understood that now.

The first thing she noticed was the washing machines.

She could hear them from the foyer.

The second thing was Margaret's expression.

Margaret appeared at the bottom of the stairs too quickly.

"You're early."

Vanessa glanced around.

"Where's Daniel?"

"Running an errand."

Sophie came out of the upstairs hallway.

Vanessa looked at her niece.

Sophie's face was pale.

"Come here."

Sophie ran to her.

Margaret stepped forward.

"She's been overtired."

Vanessa looked down.

"Sophie?"

The girl whispered.

"She's still in there."

Margaret closed her eyes.

Vanessa felt something cold move through her.

"Who?"

Sophie pointed toward the basement.

Margaret grabbed Vanessa's arm.

"She's confused."

Vanessa pulled away.

"Who is downstairs?"

"No one."

Then Vanessa heard Claire.

Faintly.

A woman's voice beneath the rumble.

She walked toward the basement stairs.

Margaret stepped in front of her.

"Vanessa."

"Move."

"Daniel needs to explain first."

That sentence confirmed everything.

Vanessa pushed past her.

She descended.

Diane stood by the washing machines.

Margaret followed.

Vanessa looked around.

"Where is she?"

Diane said nothing.

Then the machines stopped.

Claire had reached through the lower chute opening with the end of a broom handle she had managed to hook from a nearby shelf.

She hit the power strip.

Both machines died.

Silence.

Vanessa heard Claire breathing inside the shaft.

Then Claire said her name.

"Vanessa."

Vanessa stared at the chute.

Claire continued.

"I'm Claire Bennett."

Vanessa's face drained of color.

Margaret rushed toward the machines.

Vanessa grabbed her wrist.

"Don't."

Margaret froze.

Vanessa walked toward the chute.

"Claire?"

"Yes."

"Are you hurt?"

"My shoulder. I don't know how bad."

Vanessa stared at Diane.

"Why is she in there?"

Diane began crying.

"It was an accident."

Claire answered.

"Keeping me here wasn't."

Vanessa turned slowly.

Margaret lifted the document packet.

"She is refusing to cooperate."

Vanessa looked at the papers.

Then at Margaret.

"You trapped a woman in a laundry chute because she wouldn't sign something?"

"No one trapped her. She fell."

"And then you left her there."

"She's being irrational."

Vanessa's eyes hardened.

"What papers?"

Margaret hugged them against her chest.

"Family matters."

Vanessa stepped closer.

"Daniel told me Claire lives in Arizona."

Claire laughed bitterly from inside the shaft.

"I live twelve minutes from here."

Vanessa looked physically sick.

Diane whispered.

"Daniel said you knew."

Vanessa turned on her.

"Knew what?"

"That they were still married."

Vanessa stared.

"No."

Silence.

Then Claire lifted her phone.

"There's more."

She played Daniel's saved voicemail.

His voice filled the basement.

Sign the papers. Once everything is transferred, Mom will open the chute.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Margaret stepped toward her.

"He was protecting your future."

Vanessa opened her eyes.

"My future?"

"The house was supposed to be yours and Daniel's."

Vanessa laughed once.

The sound was sharp.

"You mean Claire's house?"

"No. Mine."

Claire spoke.

"Until you transfer it to Daniel. Then I have a marital claim."

Vanessa looked at Margaret.

"And that's why you needed her signature?"

Margaret did not answer.

Vanessa walked to Diane.

"Give me the documents."

Diane stepped backward.

Margaret shouted.

"No."

Vanessa snatched them.

She opened the first page.

Claire Elizabeth Bennett.

Her eyes moved lower.

Then farther down.

Psychiatric authorization.

Vanessa turned toward the chute.

Claire looked at her through the narrow opening.

"Ask your fiancé why his wife is locked in here."

That was when Daniel's shadow appeared on the stairs.
