Chapter 10 - What the Police Found
The first person through the basement door was not a police officer.
It was a firefighter.
A woman named Elena Ruiz descended the stairs carrying equipment, took one look at the chute, and immediately ordered everyone away.
Two firefighters followed.
Then police.
Claire remained trapped for another fourteen minutes while the crew opened part of the metal enclosure.
Those fourteen minutes changed Daniel's life.
Officer Marcus Hill separated everyone.
Vanessa gave him the documents.
Diane gave him her phone.
Sophie told another officer exactly what she had heard.
Margaret insisted the entire situation was a misunderstanding.
Daniel tried to leave the basement.
Officer Hill stopped him.
"Stay here."
Daniel smiled.
"Am I being detained?"
"At the moment, you're being asked to remain while we determine what happened."
Daniel's smile tightened.
"I'd like to call my attorney."
"You may."
Daniel reached for his phone.
Claire heard everything from inside the chute.
Metal groaned around her as firefighters worked.
Then Elena spoke gently.
"We're going to cut this section. You may feel the panel shift."
Claire nodded even though Elena could barely see her.
"Okay."
"You've done the hard part."
Claire almost laughed.
The panel opened.
Cool air hit her face.
Hands supported her.
They carefully lifted her free.
When Claire's feet touched the basement floor, her legs nearly collapsed.
Vanessa moved toward her.
Then stopped, uncertain.
Diane tried to approach.
Claire raised one hand.
"Not yet."
Her mother froze.
A paramedic examined Claire's shoulder.
The injury was superficial.
Her knee was badly bruised but stable.
No fracture.
Claire sat on the bottom stair wrapped in a blanket.
Officer Hill approached.
"Mrs. Bennett, I need to ask you a few questions."
Claire held up the phone.
"Start with this."
The recording lasted one hour and thirteen minutes.
It contained Margaret's demand.
Diane turning up the washing machines.
Daniel discussing the psychiatric petition.
Daniel admitting they needed Claire's signature before the property transfer.
And Daniel trying to redefine the situation once he realized police had been called.
Officer Hill listened to several sections.
Then looked at Daniel.
Daniel called his attorney.
By evening, investigators had searched Margaret's office with her consent because she still believed nothing criminal had happened.
They found copies of financial documents.
Draft transfer agreements.
Emails between Daniel and a private lender.
And something no one expected.
A second mortgage application against Margaret's property.
Daniel had planned to receive the house through the trust and immediately use it as collateral for another loan.
The lender wanted confirmation that Claire had waived marital claims.
Without her signature, the deal could not close.
The amount was two hundred and fifty thousand dollars.
Vanessa sat in the living room when she learned that.
She looked at Daniel.
"You were going to mortgage this house?"
Daniel answered.
"It was temporary."
Margaret stared at him.
"You said the loan was eighty thousand."
Daniel closed his eyes.
Claire almost felt sorry for Margaret.
Almost.
Then Officer Hill found another document.
A beneficiary change form.
Margaret's life insurance.
Primary beneficiary.
Daniel Bennett.
Secondary beneficiary.
Vanessa Cole.
Vanessa stared.
"I never agreed to that."
Margaret looked confused.
"I didn't sign this."
Officer Hill examined the page.
The signature looked like Margaret's.
But Margaret insisted it was not.
Daniel's attorney arrived twenty minutes later.
The conversations stopped.
Claire was transported to the hospital for examination.
Rachel met her there.
She hugged Claire carefully.
Claire finally cried.
