Chapter 9 - the trust written for an unborn heir

The trust amendment was recovered from Isabella’s hotel room.

Officer Reyes obtained a search order after the audio recording proved she had lied about being alone with Khloe.

The document appeared legitimate.

The signature pages were real.

The legal language had been copied directly from the Vale family trust.

Only one paragraph had been added.

If an unborn beneficiary’s parents became legally or medically incapable before the child’s birth, temporary control of the beneficiary’s assets would pass to the named family representative.

The representative was Isabella Hart.

Khloe read the paragraph twice.

“Why would my signature activate this?”

Elaine examined the document.

“It confirms you understood and accepted the guardianship arrangement.”

“I did not.”

“The cover page described it as a protection amendment. The actual meaning was buried in the definitions.”

Marcus stood beside the hospital window, barely containing his anger.

“Who prepared it?”

“The digital registration lists Vale Legal Holdings,” Elaine said.

“I have never heard of it.”

“I have.”

They turned toward her.

Elaine sat down.

“Your father created Vale Legal Holdings shortly before he died. It was meant to investigate unauthorized trust transfers without alerting the main family office.”

“Then the company still exists?” Khloe asked.

“It should not. I dissolved it eleven years ago.”

Officer Reyes looked through the recovered file.

“Someone renewed the registration six months ago.”

“That would require Malcolm’s authorization code,” Elaine said.

“Could someone have copied it?”

“No. The code changed every thirty days and required his biometric confirmation.”

Marcus turned from the window.

“My father is dead.”

No one answered.

Khloe reached for the photograph from her handbag.

“Is this the law office?”

Officer Reyes studied the image of Marcus entering the building.

Marcus stared at it.

“That is not me.”

Khloe looked from the photograph to her husband.

“The man has your face.”

“He has my coat and my height, but I was in Chicago that day.”

Elaine enlarged the image.

The man’s left hand was visible near the door.

He wore Malcolm’s signet ring.

Officer Reyes examined the metadata.

“The photograph was printed from an original digital file. We need the source.”

Marcus looked at the hidden man beneath the umbrella.

“Someone has been appearing in public as me.”

“Or someone wants us to believe that,” Elaine said.

Khloe studied the photograph again.

The law office window reflected a parked car.

Inside the vehicle sat a woman.

Only part of her face was visible.

Khloe recognized the burgundy scarf around her neck.

“Isabella was there.”

Officer Reyes nodded.

“She knew the man was not Marcus.”

Marcus walked toward the door.

“I am speaking to her.”

Officer Reyes blocked him.

“You are emotionally involved.”

“She tried to harm my wife and take control of my child’s future.”

“That is exactly why you are not questioning her.”

Khloe placed the photograph on the table.

“Let me talk to her.”

Marcus shook his head.

“No.”

“She believes I am frightened. She believes the false recording gave her power over me.”

“You are not going near her alone.”

“I won’t be alone. Officer Reyes can listen.”

Elaine looked at Khloe with new respect.

“What will you ask?”

Khloe touched the handwritten sentence on the back of the photograph.

Ask Marcus why your baby has two birth certificates.

“I will ask her which child the trust is really protecting.”
