Chapter 11 - the lie beneath the chandelier

Elaine did not deny the second birth certificate.
She asked Officer Reyes to close the conference room door.
Marcus stood across from her.
“Who is listed on the other certificate?”
Elaine looked at Khloe before answering.
“A woman named Celia Arden.”
“Who was she?”
“Your biological mother.”
The silence that followed felt heavier than any argument.
Marcus stepped back.
“You told me you gave birth to me.”
“I raised you from the day you came home.”
“That was not my question.”
Elaine’s composure finally weakened.
“No. I did not give birth to you.”
Khloe watched Marcus’s expression close.
“Why did my father create two records?”
“He did not. The hospital did.”
“Why?”
“Celia was young. She worked as a researcher here. Malcolm had an affair with her.”
Marcus turned away.
Elaine continued, forcing herself to speak.
“When Celia became pregnant, Malcolm wanted to leave me. Then she disappeared two days after you were born.”
“Disappeared?”
“She left the hospital. Her apartment was empty. Her family claimed they had not heard from her.”
“And you took her child.”
“I took you.”
“You changed my birth certificate.”
“Malcolm did. He believed Celia had abandoned you and wanted to protect the family.”
Marcus faced her again.
“Did you ever look for her?”
“For years.”
“Did you find her?”
Elaine hesitated.
That hesitation was enough.
“You found something.”
“An unsigned letter. Celia claimed someone threatened her.”
“Who?”
“She did not say.”
“Where is the letter?”
“It disappeared the night your father died.”
Officer Reyes connected the facts.
“Malcolm was investigating trust transfers, your birth registration, and Celia’s disappearance.”
Elaine nodded.
“The original trust identified the first biological child of Malcolm Vale as primary heir. When your certificate was changed, the trustees created a hidden verification file. Your father feared someone might use the original record to challenge your identity.”
Khloe looked toward the amendment.
“The registration number belongs to the original certificate.”
“Yes,” Elaine said. “The amendment was not designed for Khloe’s baby. It was designed to activate the hidden identity clause connected to Marcus.”
Isabella laughed quietly.
Everyone turned toward her.
“You still do not understand,” she said.
Officer Reyes stepped closer.
“Then explain.”
“The trust does not transfer to Marcus’s child because Marcus is not the final heir.”
Marcus studied her.
“What does that mean?”
Isabella’s eyes moved toward Elaine.
“Ask her what happened to Celia’s second baby.”
Elaine’s face lost all color.
Marcus stared at her.
“There was another child?”
“I did not know,” Elaine whispered.
Isabella leaned back.
“Malcolm knew.”
“How do you know?” Khloe asked.
“Because the man you saw in the corridor has spent his entire life proving he exists.”
Marcus thought of the figure wearing his tuxedo and Malcolm’s ring.
“My brother.”
Isabella smiled.
“Half-brother.”
“Is he the man who attacked Khloe?”
“I never said he attacked anyone.”
“You worked with him.”
“I worked with the person who promised to restore what the Vale family stole.”
Officer Reyes placed both hands on the table.
“Give me his name.”
Isabella looked directly at Marcus.
“He uses yours.”
The chandelier above them flickered.

Every electronic device in the room went dark.
From somewhere inside the hospital, an alarm began to sound.
