Chapter 15 - the frame after the ending

Three days later, Khloe returned home with Marcus.
The doctors had ordered rest, limited visitors, and continuous monitoring until the baby was born.
Marcus transformed the upper floor of their townhouse into a private medical suite.
He also replaced the entire security team.
No device entered the house without being checked. Every employee underwent a new background investigation. The nursery was locked behind biometric glass accessible only to Marcus and Khloe.
For the first time since the gala, the house felt quiet.
The news reported Isabella’s arrest, Owen’s suspension, and Elaine’s resignation from the hospital board.
The public knew nothing about Marcus’s second birth certificate.
They knew nothing about Michael Arden.
Officer Reyes believed secrecy would make Michael careless.
Khloe was not convinced.
Michael had spent months manipulating records, people, and cameras. Carelessness did not appear to be one of his weaknesses.
That afternoon, Officer Reyes arrived carrying a sealed evidence envelope.
“We enhanced the corridor reflection,” he said.
Marcus opened the envelope.
Inside was a printed frame from the security video.
The image showed the man in the tuxedo standing behind Owen.
The scar above his eyebrow was clearer.
So was the object in his hand.
It was not a security card.
It was a hospital identification bracelet.
Khloe read the handwritten number beneath the image.
“Whose patient number is that?”
Officer Reyes placed a file on the table.
“The number belongs to Michael Arden.”
Marcus opened the file.
The hospital admission date was eleven years earlier.
The same night Malcolm Vale died.
“Michael was inside St. Catherine’s when my father died?”
“According to the record, he was admitted after a car accident.”
“What happened to him?”
“The file says he died during surgery.”
Khloe stared at the photograph.
“Then either the man in the video is not Michael, or Michael’s death was falsified.”
Officer Reyes nodded.
“There is something else.”
He placed a second photograph beside the first.
The image had been taken outside the Vale townhouse that morning.
A man stood across the street beneath a black umbrella.
His face was hidden.
Beside him was a young woman wearing a hospital uniform.
Khloe recognized her.
“She was the nurse who left me at the elevator before I went to Suite 1708.”
Marcus moved toward the window.
The street appeared empty.
Officer Reyes handed him a small memory card.
“This was delivered to the police station with your name on it.”
“What is on it?”
“One video file.”
They inserted the card into an isolated laptop.
The screen showed Suite 1708 eleven years earlier.
The timestamp marked the night Malcolm died.
Malcolm Vale stood near the bed, speaking to someone outside the camera’s view.
“You were supposed to protect both boys,” Malcolm said.
A man answered.
“We protected the one you chose.”
Malcolm shook his head.
“Marcus was never the chosen one.”
Elaine entered the old recording.
She was younger, frightened, and holding an envelope.
“What did you do?” she demanded.
Malcolm turned toward her.
Before he could answer, the door opened behind them.
A third person entered the suite.
The camera showed only the visitor’s back.
Elaine dropped the envelope.
The recording stopped.
Marcus replayed the final second.
On the floor beside Elaine’s shoe, the envelope had opened.
A photograph was visible inside.
It showed two newborn boys lying beside each other.
Khloe looked at Marcus.
“You were not the only baby Elaine took home.”
A sound came from the nursery upstairs.
The baby monitor activated even though the nursery was empty.
Marcus grabbed the tablet.
The camera showed the untouched crib.
A white envelope rested on the blanket.
No one had entered the house.
Marcus and Officer Reyes ran upstairs while Khloe watched through the monitor.
They opened the nursery door.
The envelope contained a copy of the photograph from Malcolm’s final recording.
On the back, someone had written:
One child inherited the Vale name.
The other inherited the truth.
Beneath the message was a date.
Tomorrow.
And an address beneath St. Catherine’s Hospital.
Marcus turned the photograph over again.
A smaller line of writing appeared near the corner.
Bring Elaine.
Come without the police.
Or Khloe will learn which brother is the father named in her baby’s trust.
Downstairs, Khloe’s phone began to ring.
The caller identification displayed Marcus’s name.
Marcus was standing beside her.
Khloe answered.
For several seconds, there was only silence.
Then a man spoke in a voice almost identical to Marcus’s.
“Do not believe the birth certificate,” he said.
Khloe gripped the phone.
“What do you want?”
“To finish what Malcolm started.”
“Who are you?”
The man released a slow breath.
“The brother your husband was never supposed to know existed.”
The line went dead.
At that exact moment, the townhouse security system announced that the front door had been opened using Marcus’s biometric identity.
Marcus looked toward the staircase.
Officer Reyes reached for his radio.
Footsteps entered the foyer below.
A familiar male voice called Khloe’s name.
May you like
It sounded exactly like Marcus.
But Marcus was still standing beside her.
