Chapter 1 - the celebration before the fall

Twenty-four hours earlier, Marcus Vale believed the greatest danger to his family was a disagreement over money.
He was wrong.
The Vale Foundation’s winter charity gala filled the upper floors of St. Catherine’s Private Hospital with crystal lights, string music, and guests who spoke softly because photographers were nearby.
The hospital was one of the most respected medical institutions in Manhattan. It was also controlled by the Vale family through a trust established by Marcus’s grandfather.
That evening, the family was announcing a new maternity research center.
Khloe had designed the program.
She stood near the entrance to the ballroom in a cream maternity dress, one hand resting beneath her stomach. At eight months pregnant, she had been advised to avoid long events, but the research center mattered to her.
It had been created after she discovered how many expecting mothers were being turned away from specialized treatment because they could not afford private care.
Marcus watched her greet a group of young doctors. Although he smiled, he remained close enough to reach her within seconds.
“You have been watching me all night,” Khloe said when he approached.
“I’m your husband. I’m allowed.”
“You’re staring at everyone who comes near me.”
“That is also allowed.”
She smiled and adjusted the front of his black tuxedo.
For a moment, the gala disappeared around them.
Then Isabella Hart entered the ballroom.
She wore a burgundy gown that caught every chandelier’s reflection. Conversations shifted as she crossed the room. Isabella had once served as the Vale Foundation’s financial director and had nearly married Marcus before he ended their engagement three years earlier.
Publicly, the separation had been described as mutual.
Privately, Isabella had never forgiven him.
Elaine Vale entered behind her, carrying a silver tablet containing the evening’s donor records.
Elaine was Marcus’s mother and chairwoman of the hospital board. She had the calm posture of a woman who had spent decades hiding family disasters before the press could discover them.
Her gaze moved from Isabella to Khloe.
“You should be resting,” Elaine told Khloe.
“I’m fine.”
“You said that yesterday, and your doctor still ordered additional monitoring.”
Marcus’s expression changed. “What happened yesterday?”
Khloe looked at Elaine.
“It was only a brief pain. The baby is fine.”
“You didn’t tell me.”
“Because I knew you would cancel the entire gala and carry me home.”
“I still might.”
Isabella stopped beside them.
“What a beautiful family moment,” she said. “It almost makes people forget why the foundation is really making this announcement.”
Khloe studied her. “And why is that?”
“To protect the Vale reputation after the audit.”
Marcus’s voice became cold.
“This is not the place.”
“Of course not,” Isabella replied. “The place would be a private room with no witnesses.”
Elaine stepped between them.
“Isabella, the board invited you because you still represent several donors. Do not mistake courtesy for trust.”
Isabella’s smile weakened.
A hospital administrator approached Elaine and whispered something about missing electronic access records.
Elaine glanced toward the private corridor outside the ballroom.
“Marcus, stay with Khloe.”
“I was already planning to.”
Elaine left with the administrator.
Isabella watched her go.
Then she turned toward Khloe.
“I suppose you believe you have won.”
Khloe remained calm. “I didn’t know we were competing.”
“You married Marcus. You convinced him to remove me from the foundation. Now you are carrying the child who will inherit everything.”
Marcus moved closer.
“That is enough.”
Isabella looked directly at him.
“Ask your wife what she signed this morning.”
Khloe’s face changed.
Marcus noticed.
“What did you sign?”
Before she could answer, the lights above the ballroom flickered.
The music stopped.
A hospital employee hurried toward the control panel.
In the confusion, Isabella leaned closer to Khloe.

“Suite 1708,” she whispered. “Come alone if you want to know who is trying to take your baby’s trust.”
Then she disappeared into the crowd.
