Chapter 14 - the door Marcus finally closed

By morning, Isabella had confessed to attacking Khloe.

Her confession was not motivated by remorse.

It was motivated by fear.

She admitted that she had worked with Owen for six months to create evidence that Marcus and Khloe were incapable of controlling the unborn child’s trust.

In exchange, she had been promised temporary guardianship and a permanent position as head of the Vale Foundation.

She also admitted that she had pushed Khloe during the struggle.

“I wanted the document,” she told Officer Reyes. “I never intended to harm the baby.”

Khloe listened from the adjoining room.

The excuse brought no comfort.

Isabella had chosen ambition over the safety of an unborn child. Whether she intended the final consequence no longer mattered.

Officer Reyes formally arrested her for assault, conspiracy, falsifying evidence, and attempted financial fraud.

Owen was also taken into custody.

His confession was more complicated.

He admitted to disabling the hospital’s main security feed, duplicating Marcus’s access card, and wearing Elaine’s coat.

However, he insisted he had done those things to control an operation Michael Arden had already set in motion.

“You could have warned us,” Marcus said.

Owen looked exhausted.

“I tried to warn your father. He died before he could act.”

“And you spent eleven years obeying the same people?”

“I spent eleven years collecting proof.”

Marcus glanced toward the metal case.

“You let Isabella target Khloe.”

“That was my failure.”

“No. That was your choice.”

Owen did not disagree.

Doctors confirmed that Khloe and the baby were safe. She would remain under observation, but there were no signs of immediate danger.

For the first time since the gala, Marcus allowed himself to breathe.

He sat beside her bed and held her hand.

“I should have told you about the reports against me.”

“You thought you were protecting me.”

“That excuse seems common in my family.”

Khloe looked toward Elaine, who stood near the door.

Elaine entered slowly.

“I owe both of you the truth,” she said.

Marcus did not invite her to sit.

“Did you choose me instead of another baby?”

Elaine’s eyes filled with pain.

“I was told Celia had given birth to one son. Malcolm brought you to me and said she had left. I did not know there was another child.”

“Do you believe Michael is telling the truth?”

“I believe Malcolm hid more from me than I understood.”

“Did you know the trust funded illegal programs?”

“No.”

“Did you suspect?”

Elaine remained silent.

Marcus nodded.

“That is an answer.”

“I suspected your father used foundation money for private investigations. I never believed patients were being harmed.”

“But you chose not to look.”

“Yes.”

The admission was quiet.

Marcus walked to the door.

For years, Elaine had controlled every family crisis by deciding which truths others were strong enough to hear.

This time, Marcus made the decision.

“You are stepping down as hospital chairwoman.”

Elaine’s expression tightened.

“The board will not accept an immediate resignation.”

“They will when they receive the security footage, the false birth records, and proof that you concealed the location of my father’s death.”

“You would destroy the family foundation.”

“No. I will remove the people who used it as a shield.”

He opened the door.

Elaine looked at Khloe.

“Will you allow me to see my grandchild?”

Khloe answered carefully.

“When we know our child is safe, we will decide what place you have in our family.”

Elaine nodded once and left.

Marcus closed the door behind her.

It was the first boundary he had ever placed between himself and the woman who raised him.

Khloe reached for him.

“The main trust has been frozen,” she said. “Isabella cannot touch it.”

“Owen is in custody. The recording proves you did not attack her.”

“The hospital board is opening an independent investigation.”

“And Michael?”

Khloe looked toward the photograph of the man with Marcus’s face.

“He is still out there.”

Marcus placed the photograph inside the metal case.

“He wanted us to find Isabella. He wanted us to uncover my birth certificate. Every clue led exactly where he wanted.”

“To your father.”

“And to my mother.”

Khloe held his gaze.

“Then this is not over.”

“No.”

Outside the suite, the morning sun began to rise over Manhattan.

For a few hours, however, the door remained closed.

Khloe was safe.

Their baby was safe.
