Chapter 9 - Ten Minutes of Truth

Chaos erupted.
Agents restrained Matthew while medics dragged Charles from the stage. Tony ran toward the server access door. Adrian lifted Nora from the wheelchair and carried her behind a stone exhibit as gunfire came from hidden balconies.
The network had guards inside the museum.
Mara Quinn took command, directing agents through the galleries. Elena, no longer pretending to be Adrian's sister, joined Tony at the server room. Rachel followed despite orders to stay down. Shadow stayed with her.
The countdown appeared on every screen.
Nine minutes, twelve seconds.
The final archive required three forms of authorization: a Vale ring, a Bell descendant's voice, and a biometric sample from the current program director.
Charles had built the system so no single person could open or destroy it.
"Who is the current director?" Adrian asked.
Charles, bleeding on the floor, laughed. "Not me."
Matthew shouted from restraint, "Celeste."
Adrian nearly believed him, because betrayal had become easier to accept than innocence.
Nora said, "He lies. The director title passes through the maternal line of the founding family. Charles married into it."
All eyes turned toward Celeste's history.
Her maiden name was Harrow.
The original placement charity had been founded by Beatrice Harrow Vale.
Celeste, whether she knew it or not, was the legal director.
Eight minutes.
Tony called the hospital. Celeste was still unconscious. Remote biometric verification might work if they accessed her medical scan, but the network had already locked the hospital systems.
Elena found an alternative. "The director can be replaced by unanimous succession. The ring holder, Bell witness, and active custodian can appoint a new one."
"Active custodian?" Adrian asked.
A frightened voice answered from the balcony.
One of the museum guards removed his mask. It was the estate physician, the man who had poisoned Celeste. Tony had believed him in custody, but the prisoner at the estate had been another replacement.
He claimed the active custodian was Matthew.
Matthew smiled.
Seven minutes.
Matthew had spent decades as family attorney, moving children, altering estates, and silencing witnesses. He offered to stop the upload if Adrian granted him immunity and control of the Vale Foundation.
"You do not want truth," Adrian said. "You want ownership."
"Ownership is what your family has always called responsibility."
Rachel stepped onto the stage. "I will do the voice part."
Adrian told her no.
"You chose me at the factory," she said. "Now let me choose too."
Nora nodded. "She has the right."
Six minutes.
Adrian pressed his ring to the console. Rachel spoke her full birth name, Rachel Lillian Bell. The system accepted both.
Matthew's biometric remained.
Mara offered a deal with no promise of immunity. Matthew refused.
Shadow suddenly ran to him and bit his injured hand. Matthew screamed. Blood struck the console.
Biometric accepted.
The system opened.
Adrian expected a delete command.
There was none.
Only three options:
Release all identities.
Erase all identities.
Transfer custody.
Five minutes.
Releasing everything would destroy innocent lives. Erasing everything would protect criminals and permanently sever stolen people from their origins.
Transfer custody required a designated institution and a public guardian.
Mara suggested federal protection. Charles laughed. "Governments helped build this."
Nora suggested an independent trust controlled by survivors.
Matthew warned that courts would seize it.
Elena proposed dividing the archive into sealed personal records, each accessible only to the person named or by court order. It would preserve truth without creating a public list.
The system had no such option.
Adrian realized Charles had designed the choice to force catastrophe.
Two minutes.
Rachel looked at the wooden dolls hanging overhead. "At the factory, they made us choose between two punishments. Shadow never chose. He broke the box."
Adrian understood.
"Tony, cut the external upload. Elena, preserve the local drives. Mara, evacuate everyone."
"That will trigger the fire suppression purge," Elena said. "The servers will burn."
"Not if we move them first."
They had ninety seconds.
Agents tore drives from racks. Tony severed fiber lines. Smoke filled the server room as a thermite system activated. Shadow crawled beneath a burning cabinet and dragged out a small black drive attached to a pink ribbon.
The countdown reached zero.
The screens went dark.
No global release occurred.
They escaped with only eleven percent of the archive.
Outside, dawn broke over the ruined museum. Survivors cheered quietly when Mara confirmed the upload had failed.
Then Elena examined the black drive Shadow had saved.
It contained one folder.
THE ORIGINALS.
Inside were live surveillance feeds from twenty-three houses.
In one feed, a woman who looked exactly like Celeste Vale sat at the Vale estate beside Celeste's hospital bed.
May you like
The woman turned toward the hidden camera and smiled.
As agents carried drives from the burning server room, dozens of wooden dolls fell from the ceiling when the suspension cables melted. Each doll split open on impact, revealing a strip of microfilm inside. Charles had hidden duplicate records in the bodies of symbols meant to represent nameless children. Mara ordered every fragment collected. The discovery later proved that eleven percent of the digital archive was not all they had saved; the dolls contained placement contracts, payment ledgers, and letters from parents who had spent decades searching. One letter was addressed to "the boy with the blue ribbon." Adrian did not read it during the fire. He placed it inside his shirt, close to his heart, and carried it out while the museum collapsed behind him.
