Chapter 10 - Two Mothers in One House

Adrian called the estate, but the lines were dead.
Tony drove faster than Adrian had ever seen him drive. Mara followed with federal vehicles. Rachel sat between Nora and Elena, holding Shadow close while the puppy slept from exhaustion.
At the estate gates, security officers refused entry.
They wore Vale uniforms, but Tony recognized none of them.
A firefight began beneath the stone lions. Mara's agents breached the east wall while Adrian and Tony entered through an old river passage Celeste had shown them as children.
The passage opened behind the chapel.
Inside the estate, every portrait had been removed. The halls smelled of antiseptic. Staff members lay sedated in the dining room. In the library, two hospital beds stood beneath the chandeliers.
Celeste occupied one.
The other was empty.
A woman in Celeste's cream coat stood at the ring compartment.
She turned.
She had Celeste's face, but her eyes were colder.
"Adrian," she said warmly. "You took longer than expected."
Tony aimed his gun. "Hands where I can see them."
The woman obeyed. "My name is Cassandra Harrow. Celeste is my twin."
Celeste stirred in the bed. "Do not believe her."
Cassandra explained that the Harrow family had produced identical twins for generations and used one as public heir, one as hidden custodian. Celeste had been chosen for marriage to Charles. Cassandra had been trained to replace her if she resisted.
"I refused the role," Cassandra claimed. "Charles imprisoned me. I escaped when the museum fell."
Celeste forced herself upright. "She ran the program."
"She inherited the title," Cassandra corrected. "I did the work she was too weak to face."
Adrian looked from one mother to the other.
Nora entered behind him and recognized Cassandra immediately. "You took Elias from my arms."
Cassandra smiled. "I saved him from poverty."
Nora crossed the room and slapped her.
The sound was clean and satisfying.
Cassandra's expression broke for the first time.
Rachel noticed blood beneath the ring compartment. Shadow sniffed it and barked at the wall. Tony opened the hidden panel and found Matthew inside, barely conscious, chained to a pipe.
The Matthew captured at the museum was another replacement.
The real Matthew had tried to steal Charles's ring to expose Cassandra. He had escaped the factory but been taken at the estate.
Every certainty reversed again.
Mara's agents secured Cassandra. She demanded legal counsel and warned that the network would continue without her. The captured false Matthew killed himself with poison before interrogation.
The real Matthew, treated in the library, confessed that he had spent years hiding evidence while pretending loyalty. He had done terrible things to protect his access and did not ask forgiveness.
"Lillian Bell contacted me two years ago," he said. "She had proof of where the original children were kept. Cassandra discovered us. Lillian was taken."
"Is she alive?" Rachel asked.
Matthew looked at her with unbearable sadness. "I do not know."
Cassandra laughed from across the room. "I do."
She offered Lillian's location in exchange for the black drive.
Adrian refused.
Cassandra turned to Rachel. "Your mother chose the program over you. She believed saving thousands mattered more than saving one daughter."
Rachel's face crumpled.
Nora stepped between them. "Do not let her turn sacrifice into abandonment."
Mara took Cassandra away.
For the first time in days, the estate became quiet.
Adrian sat beside Celeste. He no longer knew whether she was his mother by choice, assignment, or both.
She reached for his hand. "I should have told you."
"Yes."
"Can you ever forgive me?"
"I do not know."
It was the most honest answer he had.
That night, the black drive decrypted another file. It showed Lillian Bell alive in a white room, speaking directly to the camera.
"Rachel," she said, "when you see this, do not come for me. The man called Adrian is not your uncle. His file was changed before placement. His real father was Charles Vale."
Adrian stopped the video.
Nora whispered, "That is impossible."
From the doorway, Charles's voice answered, "No. It is merely the part I never had courage to tell you."
May you like
He stood there in hospital clothes, holding a gun.
After Cassandra's arrest, Rachel asked Celeste which twin had sung the lullaby to Elena and Adrian. Celeste answered by singing the final verse, one Adrian had not heard since childhood. Cassandra, from across the room, sang a different ending at the same time. Both claimed theirs was original. Nora surprised them by completing a third verse. She had taught it to Charles years before any Vale child heard it. The song the family treated as an ancient inheritance had come from a young nurse with no fortune and no protection. Charles had taken her child, her freedom, and even her melody, then placed the Vale name over all three. Adrian realized theft did not always erase what it stole. Sometimes it displayed it proudly and dared the owner to prove it had ever been hers.
