Chapter 6 - The Girl Who Remembered Tomorrow
Elena denied writing the message.
She denied smiling for the photograph. She denied meeting Matthew. She claimed Charles had drugged her, altered dates, and staged images before. Mara Quinn sent the photograph for analysis, but the results would take days.
Adrian brought Elena to the Vale estate under guard. Celeste collapsed when she saw her. For several minutes, mother and daughter held each other without speaking.
Then Elena asked, "Which mother are you today?"
Celeste stepped back.
The question poisoned the reunion.
Elena explained that the children in the program were taught to distrust reunions. Caretakers changed faces, clothing, and voices. Some claimed to be parents. Others punished children for believing them. The goal was to make memory dependent on authorized symbols, especially the ring.
"Rachel did not recognize you," Adrian said. "She recognized the ring."
"Exactly."
Rachel slept for fourteen hours with Shadow across her feet. When she woke, she asked for paper and drew the factory from above, including the tunnel and a room no agents had found.
Inside the drawn room stood twelve clocks.
Each clock showed a different time.
"What is this?" Tony asked.
"The tomorrow room," Rachel said. "They made us practice what would happen next."
She described rehearsals in which children memorized future emergencies: a fire at a hotel, a senator's death, a market collapse, a kidnapping. Some events happened exactly as rehearsed. Others did not.
Adrian realized the program was not merely replacing children. It was training witnesses, heirs, and emotional triggers to manipulate powerful families.
A child placed in the right home could change an inheritance, influence a vote, destroy a marriage, or open a locked archive.
Rachel had been intended for the Vale household because someone expected Adrian to choose her.
The photograph proved it.
"We walked into a script," Tony said.
"Then we change the ending," Adrian replied.
Elena believed the tomorrow room contained the master schedule. She remembered a phrase used by the caretakers: The calendar lives beneath Mercy.
Adrian remembered the dog Elena had drawn as a child. Mercy.
The blue-shuttered house from her early memories might be real.
Mara searched property records for houses linked to the Vale Foundation. One appeared near Bellweather Lake, purchased twenty-four years earlier under the name Mercy Holdings. Its shutters had once been blue.
They drove there before sunset.
The house was empty but recently cleaned. Shadow immediately ran to the kitchen and scratched at the floor. Beneath the tiles was a metal hatch that opened with Adrian's ring.
Below lay an archive more sophisticated than anything at the factory. Rows of servers hummed behind glass. Cabinets contained sealed birth records. A wall displayed photographs of children connected by colored threads to judges, business leaders, diplomats, and media owners.
Adrian found his own photograph near the center.
Birth name: Elias Bell.
Mother: Nora Bell.
Status: living at time of placement.
He stared at the name until Elena took his hand.
"Rachel's file said Bell," she whispered.
Adrian turned.
Rachel Bell.
Could she be related to him?
A server screen activated. Charles appeared in a recorded message.
"If you are watching this, Adrian, you have discovered the first layer. You will be tempted to expose everything. Before you do, understand that thousands of identities depend on these records. Reveal them carelessly, and children will lose parents, inheritances will collapse, governments will accuse one another of infiltration, and innocent people will be hunted as impostors."
The recording paused, then continued.
"Truth is not always justice. Sometimes it is merely another weapon."
Mara said, "He wants you afraid to release the files."
"He should," Elena answered. "Some of these people do not know they were placed."
Tony opened a cabinet labeled ACTIVE CORRECTIONS.
Inside were files scheduled by date.
Tomorrow's file carried Celeste Vale's name.
Action: Remove maternal obstruction.
Method: Cardiac event at 9:15 a.m.
At that exact moment, Adrian's phone rang.
Celeste had collapsed at the estate.

Among the files at Mercy House, Tony found a schedule for events that had already shaped Adrian's career: the restaurant fire that made him company president, the scandal that removed a rival heir, even Charles's supposed boating death. Each had been rehearsed by children years earlier. The network used their responses to predict public sympathy and family behavior. Rachel remembered practicing the restaurant scene. A boy played Adrian. Another child played the disgusted guest. Shadow had been rewarded whenever he ignored shouting and carried the shoe to the correct person. Yet Rachel insisted one part had changed. In rehearsal, Adrian was supposed to hand the puppy to security and return to dinner. His decision to follow Shadow had broken the schedule. That single act explained the frantic destruction of the factory. For all its planning, the network had misjudged compassion. Adrian held onto that error like a weapon.
