Chapter 12 - The Brother in the Walls

Elena recognized the gas as a short-acting anesthetic mixed with a paralytic. Tony smashed a window in the ventilation chamber while Mara searched for the control panel. Adrian wrapped his coat around Rachel's face and lifted her toward the opening.
Shadow disappeared beneath the beds.
"Shadow!" Rachel cried.
The puppy barked from inside the wall.
Tony followed the sound and found a loose panel. Behind it ran a maintenance passage narrow enough for a child or small dog. Rachel crawled through despite Adrian's protest and reached the gas controls on the other side. She shut the valve with seconds to spare.
When the steel door reopened, Cassandra was gone.
The passage led to a surveillance room where a man watched them on twelve monitors.
He looked exactly like Adrian.
Same height. Same dark hair. Same scar beneath the chin.
Only his eyes were different, emptied by years underground.
"Cain," he said.
Adrian raised his hands. "My name is Adrian."
"That is the name they gave you. I am Elias."
Nora approached the glass between them. "Are you my son?"
The man smiled painfully. "You sang four notes when the lights went out. You smelled like lavender soap. You had a small burn on your left thumb."
Nora held up her thumb. The burn scar remained.
She began to cry.
Cassandra had taken Nora's biological child, Elias, and placed a Vale infant named Cain into Nora's hospital bassinet for several hours. Then she reclaimed both, using confusion in the records to create two boys with overlapping histories. Cain, Charles's son by another woman, became Adrian Vale. Elias became the hidden original used to test memories and behavior.
Adrian was not Nora's son.
Rachel was not his niece.
Yet when Rachel reached for his hand, he held it.
Elias unlocked the glass and stepped out. He had worked inside the orphanage systems for years, waiting for a chance to escape. Lillian Bell had found him and tried to rescue him. Cassandra captured her.
"She is below us," Elias said. "But Cassandra has prepared another choice."
The lower chamber contained two cells. Lillian was in one, thin but alive. In the other were six children connected to medical monitors.
A countdown showed four minutes.
Cassandra appeared on a screen. "One door opens with the Vale ring. The other opens with Bell blood. Open either, and the other chamber seals permanently."
Rachel ran to her mother's cell.
Lillian pressed both hands to the glass. "Do not choose me. Save the children."
Adrian examined the locks. The system expected cruelty disguised as necessity, just like the archive.
Elias said there might be a manual mechanism behind the wall, but reaching it would take longer than four minutes.
Tony shot the hinges. The glass was ballistic.
Elena searched the medical lines. "The children's monitors feed the lock. If we interrupt the signals, the system may believe they are dead and release containment."
"May?" Mara asked.
"Or flood the cell with gas."
Rachel took Adrian's ring. "Shadow broke the box before."
She pressed the ring to the first lock, then bit her finger and pressed Bell blood to the second at the same time.
The system rejected both.
Identity conflict.
Cassandra had not anticipated Rachel carrying both a Vale authorization object and Bell blood simultaneously.
The locks reset.
Elias crawled into the wall. Adrian followed. Together they reached the manual gears and forced both doors open as the countdown reached three seconds.
Rachel collided with Lillian, and their embrace silenced everyone.
The six children were freed.
Cassandra's screen went dark.
For one brief moment, Adrian believed they had won.
Then Elias pointed to the monitors.
One camera showed Celeste at the estate entering the ring compartment.
Another showed her removing a black ring none of them had seen before.
A third displayed a message.

FINAL DIRECTOR CONFIRMED.
Elias did not immediately step into Nora's embrace. He walked around her, studying the shape of her hands and the lines beside her mouth, comparing the living woman to thousands of rehearsed images. Then he asked her to make the sound she made when surprised. Nora laughed through her tears, a short breath followed by a hiccup. Elias collapsed against her. It was the only detail Cassandra's recordings had never captured. Adrian turned away to give them privacy and felt grief for a mother he had almost claimed, relief for a brother he had never known, and shame that some part of him feared being left outside their reunion. Rachel noticed and leaned against his side. "Being chosen is not the same as taking someone else's place," she said.
