Chapter 15 - The Child the Puppy Did Not Find

The boarding team crossed to Providence at 2:13 a.m.
No guards met them. No alarms sounded. The corridors were clean, warm, and lined with framed photographs of families smiling beside children whose origins had been rewritten.
Elias guided them toward the maternity deck.
"The training films always ended here," he said. "Children were told the ocean washed away their first names."
Mara Bell found medical carts stocked with current supplies. Someone had maintained the ship recently. Tony discovered sleeping quarters for more than two hundred people, all empty.
In the central nursery, rows of bassinets waited beneath soft lights.
Only one was occupied.
A baby slept beneath a blue blanket.
Around the infant's wrist was a black ribbon carrying the winged-lion crest.
Lillian checked the child. "Healthy. Perhaps six weeks old."
A screen above the bassinet activated.
The real Cassandra appeared.
She was older than Celeste, her face marked by burns along one side. She sat in a room that moved with the sea, but not necessarily on the same ship.
"Adrian," she said, "you have spent months dismantling a system you understand only as cruelty. You saved children, exposed crimes, and gave victims choices. For that, I am grateful."
"Then surrender."
"You still think I am the final enemy."
"You ordered children stolen."
"Yes. I also prevented governments, corporations, and criminal syndicates from building worse versions. The Vale network was not the only network. It was the oldest shield against the others."
Mara Quinn demanded proof.
Cassandra displayed files from programs with unfamiliar symbols: a crown divided in half, a white serpent, a sun with thirteen rays. Each file listed children selected for political succession, intelligence operations, or organ compatibility.
"Charles believed control could remain inside one family," Cassandra said. "He was wrong. The council is divided. Some want secrecy. Some want war. Some want Rachel."
Adrian looked at the baby.
"Who is this child?"
Cassandra smiled sadly. "The one Shadow did not find."
The puppy had followed a blood scent to Adrian because Rachel carried a shoe marked Elena Vale. But there had been another escape from the factory that night. Another child had been moved through the tunnel before the raid.
Not an older child.
An infant.
Cassandra claimed the baby was Rachel's half-sister, born while Lillian was imprisoned. Lillian denied giving birth. Medical records showed a missing period of sedation and treatment she could not remember.
Mara Bell examined her and went pale.
"There are signs of a recent pregnancy," she whispered.
Lillian staggered against the bassinet.
The cruelty of stolen memory returned in a new form.
Cassandra said the infant's DNA could unlock the complete archive because she carried Bell blood, Vale blood, and Harrow mitochondrial markers.
"That is impossible," Adrian said.
"Only if you still believe families are created by ordinary means."
Alarms began ringing.
Tony reported vessels approaching from three directions without flags. The rival networks had found Providence.
Cassandra gave Adrian a final choice. Activate the genuine black ring in the captain's chamber and assume control of the remaining Vale network, using it to protect the children. Or destroy the ship and erase the only map leading to thousands still hidden.
"No more forced choices," Adrian said.
"Then invent a third path quickly."
The screen went dark.
Explosions struck the outer hull.
Water burst into the lower decks. Mara Quinn ordered evacuation, but Elias discovered that the nursery had sealed itself. The baby began crying. Shadow scratched at a ventilation grate, then stopped and stared toward the wall.
A child's voice came through the metal.
"Rachel?"
Adrian tore away the grate.
Behind it was a narrow passage.
A boy of about ten crawled out, thin and frightened, wearing the other pink shoe.
He looked at Adrian's ring and did not show fear.
He bowed.
"Director Cain," he said, "we have been waiting for you."
"Who is we?"
The boy pointed beneath the nursery floor.
Dozens of small voices began singing the four-note lullaby.
Lillian lifted the baby. Tony forced the hatch open. Below them, a hidden deck stretched the length of the ship, filled with children watching through glass.
At the far end stood a woman in a captain's uniform.
The woman from Adrian's newborn photograph.
She had not aged.
Or someone had been trained to wear her face.
She raised the genuine black ring and spoke over the shipwide system.
"My son," she said, "Charles told you there were Originals. He never told you what they were original copies of."
The approaching vessels opened fire.
Providence tilted sharply.
Shadow leaped through the hatch toward the children. Adrian followed, carrying Elena's tiny shoe in one hand and the broken silver ring in the other.
Behind him, the nursery door exploded inward.
Men wearing the symbol of the divided crown entered with weapons raised.
The captain smiled at Adrian from across the hidden deck.
"Choose your family," she said.
May you like
Then every child turned toward him at once.
And every child had Adrian's eyes.
