Chapter 8 - Megan tells the truth
Megan resisted the investigation longer than Daniel did.
She claimed she had believed every payment was approved. She said Daniel managed the accounts and never explained where the money came from.
Then investigators showed her an email she had sent six months earlier.
The message read, Rachel cannot know until the house loan is finished.
Megan’s confidence disappeared.
Facing the possibility of serious fraud charges, she agreed to cooperate.
She admitted that Daniel had promised to make her boutique profitable by using money from Rachel’s property. He planned to borrow against the house, invest part of the loan in the company, and use the rest to cover Megan’s debts.
Once the loan was approved, Daniel intended to tell Rachel the company had suffered an emergency.
“He said she would forgive him,” Megan told the investigators. “He said she always did.”
Those words hurt Rachel more than the financial loss.
Daniel had not acted impulsively.
He had studied her kindness and treated it like a weakness.
Megan sold the boutique inventory, her designer clothing, and her car. The money did not repay everything, but it covered a significant part of what she had taken.
She sent Rachel a handwritten apology.
Rachel read it once.
Megan wrote that she had envied Rachel’s stability and believed Daniel when he said Rachel had more money than she needed. She admitted that she had enjoyed feeling protected from consequences.
Rachel did not forgive her immediately.
Forgiveness, she learned, was not a door someone could demand she open.
She sent one reply.

Then she placed the letter in a drawer and returned to rebuilding her own.
