Chapter 1 - the house Rachel built
Six years earlier, Rachel Bennett had stood in the same kitchen while workers installed the final marble panel on the island.
At the time, there had been no coffee stains, broken dishes, or angry voices. There had only been sunlight pouring through tall windows and Daniel wrapping his arms around her waist.
“You did this,” he had whispered.
Rachel had smiled.
They had been married for less than a year. Daniel was still building his consulting company, and Rachel had recently inherited money from her grandmother. She used part of the inheritance to purchase the house.
The deed was placed in Rachel’s name because the money had been hers before the marriage. Daniel had not objected.
“Your house, our home,” he had said.
Rachel believed him.
She helped Daniel expand his company, reviewed contracts, organized accounts, and introduced him to several of her former clients. Within three years, Daniel’s business began making more money than either of them had imagined.
When people praised him, Daniel called Rachel his lucky charm.
But he never told them she had created the financial system that kept the company alive during its first difficult years.
Then Megan moved to the city.
Daniel’s younger sister arrived with expensive luggage, unpaid credit cards, and a plan to open a luxury clothing boutique.
“She only needs help getting started,” Daniel told Rachel.
Rachel agreed to help Megan create a budget. She offered practical advice and found an affordable commercial space.
Megan rejected everything.
“The location isn’t glamorous enough,” she complained.
Daniel laughed and told Rachel not to be so serious.
Megan eventually rented a space in the most expensive shopping district in the city. She ordered imported furniture, hired a designer, and filled the store with clothing she had chosen based on social media trends.
The boutique lost money almost immediately.
Every month, Daniel found a new reason Rachel should help.
Megan needed money for rent.
Megan needed money for advertising.
Megan needed money to impress potential investors.

Then the promises disappeared.
