THE RING BESIDE THE REPORT / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - the hospital envelope

Nina moved quickly.

She contacted the bank, the mortgage company, and a forensic accountant. Together, they documented the forged signature and traced the payments to Megan’s boutique.

The evidence was worse than Rachel expected.

Daniel had used company funds to pay Megan’s personal debts. He had created false invoices to hide the transfers. He had also attempted to open two credit accounts in Rachel’s name.

“Do not confront him yet,” Nina warned. “We need to protect your assets first.”

Rachel nodded.

She returned home and continued behaving normally.

Every morning, she prepared coffee while Daniel spoke about business. Every evening, she listened while Megan complained about her boutique.

Neither of them realized Rachel was copying documents, recording account numbers, and removing irreplaceable belongings from the house.

Nina helped her obtain an emergency order preventing Daniel from borrowing against the property. She also prepared divorce papers and a formal fraud complaint.

The hospital report became important because it documented Rachel’s physical condition after months of pressure. It recorded her panic episode, severe exhaustion, and the doctor’s concern about her home environment.

Rachel placed the report in a large envelope with the legal documents.

She kept it hidden inside her suitcase.

Three days before she planned to leave, Megan discovered that her boutique card had been declined.

She called Daniel in a panic.

Daniel checked the accounts and learned that Rachel had frozen access to her personal funds.

That night, he came home furious.

“You embarrassed my sister.”

“I protected my account.”

“You had no right to cut her off without discussing it with me.”

Rachel almost laughed.

It was her account, yet Daniel spoke as though she had stolen from him.

“I am not paying for Megan’s boutique anymore.”

Daniel stared at her for a long moment.

Then he smiled without warmth.

“We’ll discuss this at breakfast.”

Rachel understood the threat hidden inside his calm voice.

Before going to sleep, she packed the final items in her suitcase.
