Chapter 7 - Daniel’s kingdom falls

Daniel attempted to explain everything as a misunderstanding.

He claimed the forged signature had been added by an assistant. He said the payments to Megan were legitimate consulting expenses. He insisted Rachel had approved the financial arrangements verbally.

The evidence told a different story.

The mortgage company had recorded calls in which Daniel described himself as the property owner. Computer records showed the forged documents had been uploaded from his office. Emails proved he had instructed Megan to create fake invoices.

Within a week, the company’s board removed Daniel from financial control.

Several clients canceled their contracts.

The bank closed the fraudulent accounts and began recovering the transferred funds.

Daniel called Rachel repeatedly.

At first, his messages were angry.

Then they became apologetic.

Finally, they became desperate.

He told her they could fix the marriage. He said he had made mistakes because he felt pressured to care for his family. He blamed Megan, the company, and the stress of maintaining their lifestyle.

He never accepted responsibility without attaching an excuse.

Rachel did not respond.

She stayed in a small rented apartment while Nina completed the legal process. The apartment had plain walls and a narrow kitchen, but Rachel slept better there than she had in years.

One afternoon, Daniel appeared outside the building.

Rachel did not open the door.

He remained in the hallway for nearly an hour, speaking through the wood.

“This isn’t who we are,” he said.

Rachel stood silently on the other side.

He was right.

It was not who they were.

It was who he had been while she kept trying to see someone better.

When Daniel finally left, Rachel looked down at her bare hand.

She expected to feel grief.

Instead, she felt space.
