Chapter 3 - the first crack

Rachel changed the passwords to her financial accounts and requested new cards.
Two days later, Daniel noticed.
He stood in the kitchen doorway while Rachel prepared dinner.
“Why can’t I access the savings account?”
“Because it is my personal account.”
“You never cared about that before.”
“I cared when eight thousand dollars disappeared.”
Daniel walked closer.
“You’re punishing me for helping my sister.”
“I’m protecting myself.”
The word protecting changed his expression.
Daniel did not shout. He became quiet.
That was worse.
He asked whether Rachel believed he was dangerous. He reminded her of everything he had provided. He listed vacations, dinners, and gifts, even though most had been paid from their shared account.
Then he told her she was becoming unstable.
“You should speak to someone,” he said gently. “This obsession with money isn’t healthy.”
Rachel began questioning her own judgment.
Perhaps she had become too suspicious. Perhaps Daniel had intended to repay the money. Perhaps protecting Megan was simply part of being married into a family.
For several weeks, Rachel tried to restore peace.
She stopped asking questions when Daniel took private calls. She said nothing when Megan charged restaurant meals to the company. She ignored envelopes arriving from unfamiliar lenders.
But the pressure followed her everywhere.
She stopped sleeping properly. Her hands shook during meetings. Loud voices made her heart race.
One morning, while presenting a financial proposal to a client, Rachel became dizzy. Her chest tightened, and the room blurred around her.
She woke in a hospital bed.
A doctor explained that she had experienced a severe panic episode combined with exhaustion and dangerously high stress levels.
“You need rest,” he said. “But more importantly, you need to identify what is making you feel unsafe.”
Unsafe.
Rachel had not used that word before.
Daniel arrived at the hospital carrying his phone and looking annoyed.
He stayed for twelve minutes.
“You scared everyone,” he told her. “You need to stop being so dramatic.”
Then Megan called, and Daniel left the room to answer.
Rachel listened to his footsteps disappear down the hallway.

For the first time, she did not wonder how to save her marriage.
She wondered how to escape it.
