Chapter 14 - THE FAMILY RECORD THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

Police officers flooded Level B3.
Marcus Vale, Elena, Adrian, Michael, Evan, Nell, Piper, Leah and the injured Celia were separated for questioning.
Paramedics carried Celia from the chamber.
Piper refused to release her hand until the ambulance doors closed.
Elena stood several feet away.
She did not attempt to claim the role of mother.
Not then.
Marcus was taken away in restraints, but his final statement remained in Piper’s mind.
One of you was never born to Elena.
The authorities sealed the underground levels.
Federal investigators arrived before dawn.
For the next forty-eight hours, Westbridge Academy became the center of a national criminal investigation.
News vans lined the gates.
Parents demanded answers.
Former students reported hidden recordings, manipulated disciplinary cases and unexplained payments.
Vale Horizon Media’s stock collapsed.
Several school administrators disappeared before warrants could be served.
Vice Principal Rowan’s office was found empty.
Adrian, or Daniel, had vanished during the evacuation.
Nobody could confirm his real identity.
Piper sat beside Celia’s hospital bed.
The bullet had damaged her liver, but surgeons expected her to survive.
Celia remained unconscious.
Elena waited outside the room each day.
Piper never invited her inside.
She never asked her to leave either.
Nell visited once.
The bruise on her cheek had faded to yellow. A thin cut remained near her hairline from the first-aid room.
Piper looked at it.
“I am sorry.”
Nell stopped near the door.
“For which part?”
“The slap.”
“The chair?”
“That too.”
“The months of videos?”
Piper looked down.
“All of it.”
“Sorry does not erase it.”
“I know.”
“Some students may never forgive you.”
“I know.”
“You may face criminal charges.”
“I know.”
Nell watched her.
This was not the Piper who controlled hallways with a smile.
But it was not yet proof she had changed.
“What did your lawyer say?”
“That my father documented everything. He kept records showing he encouraged specific videos and supplied private information.”
“That may help your case.”
“It also proves I enjoyed doing it.”
Nell said nothing.
Piper looked toward Celia.
“I keep wondering whether the program made me cruel.”
“Does it matter?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because if it made me that way, maybe none of it was really me.”
“And if it was you?”
Piper’s eyes filled with tears.
“Then I have to live with it.”
Nell stepped closer.
“The program influenced you. Your father directed you. But you still made choices.”
“That is not comforting.”
“It is not supposed to be.”
Piper nodded slowly.
Nell turned to leave.
“Wait.”
Piper reached into a drawer and removed a memory card.
“I found this inside my crescent pendant.”
Nell did not take it.
“What is on it?”
“A recording from the day I was born.”
“Have you watched it?”
“No.”
“Why give it to me?”
“Because every device I own may be monitored.”
Nell accepted the card.
“What are you looking for?”
“Proof of which twin Elena gave birth to.”
Nell returned home that evening.
The house looked ordinary, which made everything worse.
Her mother, Rebecca Carter, waited in the kitchen.
Michael sat across from her.
Evan stood near the window.
The family was together for the first time in six years.
Nobody knew how to speak.
Nell placed the memory card on the table.
“Before we discuss Piper, we discuss us.”
Rebecca folded her hands.
“I wanted to tell you.”
“When?”
“When it was safe.”
“That day never comes in this family.”
Michael looked toward the floor.
Nell faced her mother.
“You were a guardian.”
“My father was involved in the original oversight committee.”
“You had files hidden inside Evan’s wall.”
“I preserved evidence Michael believed had been destroyed.”
“Did you know Dad was alive?”
Rebecca’s silence lasted too long.
Nell stepped backward.
“You knew.”
“Not at first.”
“How long?”
“Four years.”
Evan stared at her.
“You let us believe he was dead for four years?”
“I believed his return would put you in danger.”
Evan laughed bitterly.
“So lying was protection.”
Rebecca looked at Michael.
“He agreed.”
Nell faced her father.
“Of course he did.”
Michael stood.
“I made mistakes.”
“You built the language everyone uses to excuse them.”
Evan placed both palms on the table.
“We need to focus on the archive.”
“No,” Nell said. “That is how this keeps happening. Everyone focuses on the system and ignores what they do to people.”
The room fell silent.
Rebecca’s guardian device beeped.
A message appeared.
GUARDIAN CONFERENCE REQUESTED.
SOURCE: HALE.
Rebecca looked at Nell.
“He wants to discuss the files.”
“We all discuss them.”
“Guardian protocols prohibit it.”
“Then break the protocols.”
Michael shook his head.
“If the system detects unauthorized sharing, it may redistribute access.”
“To whom?”
“We do not know.”
Nell inserted Piper’s memory card into a laptop.
The video opened.
A hospital room appeared.
Elena lay unconscious in a bed.
Two newborn girls rested in separate bassinets.
Marcus stood beside a doctor.
Celia was also present.
The doctor lifted the first child.
“Twin A is healthy.”
Marcus looked at the baby.
“Prepare her for the Vale household.”
The doctor lifted the second.
“Twin B shows the marker.”
“What marker?” Celia asked.
Marcus replied, “The Carter marker.”
Nell paused the video.
Her family became still.
“What is the Carter marker?” she asked.
Michael looked as though the air had been removed from the room.
Rebecca closed her eyes.
Evan stared at his father.
Nell pressed play.
Celia moved closer to the second child.
“Why would Elena’s daughter have Michael Carter’s genetic marker?”
Marcus smiled at someone outside the camera’s view.
“Because Elena is not the mother.”
The camera shifted.
A younger Rebecca Carter entered the room.
Nell looked at her mother.
“No.”
On the recording, Rebecca approached the second baby and touched her face.
“She must never know.”
The video ended.
Piper and Leah were not simply connected to Nell’s family through the program.
One of them might be Nell’s biological sister.
Rebecca began crying.
Nell closed the laptop.
“Which twin is yours?”
“I don’t know.”
“You were in the room.”
“They switched the bracelets.”
“Who did?”
Rebecca whispered one name.
“Marcus.”
The guardian device beeped again.
This time, the message was not from Mr. Hale.
UNKNOWN GUARDIAN ACCESS DETECTED.
A third account had entered the archive.
15 - THE THIRD GUARDIAN
The message remained on the screen.
UNKNOWN GUARDIAN ACCESS DETECTED.
Rebecca picked up the device.
“That is impossible.”
Michael moved beside her.
“You said only two accounts were active.”
“They were.”
Evan opened the system log.
“A third account has been dormant for seventeen years.”
Nell looked at the timestamp.
“It activated when we played Piper’s recording.”
The laptop camera light turned on.
Nobody had touched it.
A video window opened.
The image showed a dark room.
A person sat in front of the camera, but their face remained hidden.
A distorted voice spoke.
“Guardian Rebecca Carter. Guardian Thomas Hale. Your access is now under review.”
Rebecca’s hand trembled.
“Identify yourself.”
“You know who I am.”
“No.”
The figure leaned forward.
A three-lined circle was visible on the wall behind them.
“Seventeen years ago, you voted to continue the program.”
Rebecca went pale.
Michael stared at her.
“You told me you opposed it.”
“I did.”
The distorted voice continued.
“Rebecca Carter approved Cohort Forty-Two after being informed that one child would be raised inside Vale’s household and the other within a controlled deprivation environment.”
Nell looked at her mother.
“Is that true?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“The proposal was different. They changed it after the vote.”
“You still voted.”
“I believed it would be observational.”
“You gave them children.”
“I was trying to remain inside the committee so I could collect evidence.”
Evan laughed without humor.
“Everyone in this family was secretly collecting evidence.”
Michael faced Rebecca.
“Were Piper and Leah part of your plan?”
“No.”
“Were either of them your child?”
Rebecca did not answer.
The figure on the screen spoke again.
“Only one twin survived the original procedure.”
Piper’s recording had shown two living babies.
Nell moved closer to the laptop.
“What procedure?”
“The second infant was not Elena’s twin.”
Rebecca covered her mouth.
Michael whispered, “A replacement.”
The hidden figure continued.
“Marcus needed two genetically similar subjects. When Elena delivered only one viable child, the research team substituted another infant.”
Nell felt the floor disappear beneath her.
“Rebecca’s baby.”
“Yes.”
“Which one?”
“That information was removed from the archive.”
“By Marcus?”
“By Michael Carter.”
Everyone looked at Michael.
He shook his head.
“I altered the records to protect the child.”
“Which child?” Nell demanded.
“I never knew. Marcus switched them before I reached the hospital.”
“Then why does the recording say one had the Carter marker?”
“The doctor used an early blood test. It identified the second bassinet at that moment. Marcus ordered three transfers later.”
Evan examined the guardian logs.
“The third guardian is accessing medical records.”
Rebecca stepped toward the laptop.
“What do you want?”
The figure answered calmly.
“To correct the mistake your families made.”
“What mistake?”
“Leaving the program unfinished.”
Michael grabbed the laptop and turned it toward himself.
“The program is over.”
“No. Marcus Vale used the archive for control. Elena wanted revenge. Evan wanted guardianship. You wanted erasure.”
“And you?”
“I want completion.”
Multiple files began downloading onto the laptop.
They contained photographs of Westbridge students.
Current students.
Hundreds of them.
Nell saw classmates, athletes, scholarship recipients and children from neighboring schools.
Each photograph displayed a behavioral category.
Compliance.
Aggression.
Dependency.
Leadership.
Instability.
The program had never stopped collecting data.
The underground archive was only one branch.
Mr. Hale called Rebecca’s device.
She answered on speaker.
“Thomas?”
His voice was strained.
“Do not open any files from the third guardian.”
“Too late.”
“I identified the account.”
“Who controls it?”
A loud crash interrupted him.
Someone was inside his house.
“Hale?” Michael shouted.
Mr. Hale whispered, “The founder is alive.”
The connection ended.
Rebecca looked at the hidden figure on the laptop.
“My father died twenty-three years ago.”
The figure reached toward the camera.
The distortion disappeared.
An elderly man’s face came into focus.
Rebecca dropped the guardian device.
“Dad?”
Nell stared at the man she had been told died before she was born.
He smiled gently.
“Hello, Rebecca.”
“You created the Continuity Program.”
“I created a way to prevent society from destroying itself.”
“You experimented on children.”
“I identified future threats before they became powerful.”
Michael stepped toward the screen.
“You turned fear into an industry.”
The old man ignored him.
He looked directly at Nell.
“You opened Locker 113. You survived every controlled conflict. You rejected Marcus, Elena, Michael and Evan’s versions of truth.”
Nell’s skin went cold.
“You were watching me.”
“Your entire life.”
“Why?”
“Because Piper and Leah were never the final subjects.”
More files appeared.
SUBJECT 41A: NELL CARTER.
SUBJECT 41B: EVAN CARTER.
FINAL COHORT EVALUATION.
Nell’s childhood memories had been cataloged.
Her father’s death.
Evan’s disappearance.
The school confrontation.
Even the recording that led her to the first-aid room.
Every event had a planned outcome.
“You arranged all of this,” Nell said.
“I allowed existing choices to reveal character.”
“You kidnapped Evan.”
“I gave Evan access to information and watched what he did with it.”
“You threatened my mother.”
“A simulation.”
“The masked person was real.”
“An employee.”
Nell’s anger became strangely calm.
“What do you want from me?”
“To become the fourth guardian.”
“No.”
“You have not heard the offer.”
“I do not need to.”
“You will.”
The screen changed.
A live feed appeared from Celia’s hospital room.
Piper slept in a chair beside the bed.
Elena stood near the window.
Leah was nowhere in sight.
The old man spoke.
“One of the twins carries the Carter marker.”
Nell stared at Piper.
“And?”
“The marker is not merely evidence of parentage. It is a genetic modification your father helped develop.”
Michael stepped backward.
“I terminated that project.”
“You delayed it.”
“What does the marker do?” Evan asked.
The old man smiled.
“It allows its carrier to unlock the final archive.”
A second feed appeared.
Leah walked through a brightly lit laboratory with Adrian beside her.
They were not at Westbridge.
Behind them stood rows of glass chambers.
Children slept inside.
Piper and Leah had not been the last experiment.
They had been prototypes.
The old man continued.
“Adrian has brought us one twin. Marcus’s arrest will bring us the other.”
Nell reached for her phone.
The hospital feed suddenly froze.
A nurse entered Piper’s room.
She carried a syringe.
“Piper,” Nell whispered.
On the screen, Piper opened her eyes.
The nurse locked the door.
At the same time, the front windows of the Carter house shattered.
Black vehicles surrounded the property.
Armed figures moved across the lawn.
Michael pulled Nell away from the laptop.
“Basement exit. Now.”
Rebecca grabbed the guardian device.
Evan gathered the drives.
Nell remained in front of the screen.
The old man watched her calmly.
“You can run to Piper, or you can follow Leah.”
“You planned to split us.”
“I planned to see whom you choose.”
Nell picked up her compass.
For the first time, the needle did not point north.
It pointed directly at Rebecca.
A hidden compartment opened along the compass edge.
Inside was a strip of paper in Evan’s handwriting.
Nell unfolded it.
There were only seven words.
MOM KNOWS WHICH TWIN IS YOUR SISTER.
Nell looked at Rebecca.
Outside, armed men broke through the front door.
On the hospital feed, the nurse raised the syringe toward Piper’s neck.
On the laboratory feed, Leah entered a chamber marked FINAL COHORT.
Rebecca stared at the note in Nell’s hand.
Her face revealed the answer before she spoke.
“Nell, there is something worse than learning which twin is yours.”
“What?”
Rebecca looked toward Evan.
“Learning why your father needed three daughters.”
The power went out.
A gunshot echoed from the hallway.
May you like
And in the darkness, someone wearing Piper’s crescent pendant whispered beside Nell.
“Do not trust your mother.”
