Chapter 12 - EVAN’S REAL PLAN

The communication cut out.
Nell stared at the drive in her hand.
Evan had said his version would send verified evidence to investigators and seal private records.
Mr. Hale claimed it would appoint new controllers.
One more person had lied.
Piper placed her bleeding palm against the authentication panel.
Leah did the same.
The console scanned them.
TWIN KEY CONFIRMED.
SECONDARY INDEX REQUIRED.
Elena held the compass above the lower port.
“Nell, make your decision.”
“Why did Mr. Hale say Evan’s version selects new controllers?”
Evan’s voice came through the chamber speakers.
“Because Hale misunderstood the code.”
“Come down here and explain it.”
“The barrier is sealed.”
“You started this timer. You knew we would be forced to choose.”
“Yes.”
“Who becomes controller?”
A pause.
“You and me.”
Nell closed her eyes.
Michael had tried to erase everything.
Marcus wanted to preserve his control.
Elena wanted total exposure.
Evan wanted control transferred to himself and Nell.
“Why us?” she asked.
“Because Dad’s original architecture requires two independent guardians.”
“You told me the files would be sealed.”
“They will.”
“By us.”
“Yes.”
“You planned to make me responsible for deciding which secrets survive?”
“I planned to give us the power to protect people.”
“That is what Dad said when he built it.”
“Nell, listen to me.”
“That is what Marcus says.”
“I am not Marcus.”
“Not yet.”
The timer showed 06:42.
Marcus rose from the floor, blood running from his mouth.
“You see the problem now. Every idealist believes corruption belongs to someone else.”
Piper looked at Nell.
“What happens if we choose no version?”
The blue box answered with a mechanical beep.
DEFAULT VERSION ONE IN 06:19.
Marcus’s altered files would be released.
Celia struggled against a guard.
“There must be another option.”
Leah studied the console.
“Hybrid sequencing.”
Marcus turned sharply.
“No.”
Piper noticed his reaction.
“What is hybrid sequencing?”
Leah’s fingers moved across the controls.
“It combines selected sections from different versions.”
“Can we release criminal evidence without giving control to Nell and Evan?”
“Possibly.”
“Can we protect private records?”
“Possibly.”
Marcus stepped toward Leah.
“You do not have authorization to modify the architecture.”
Leah looked at him.
“You made me memorize the architecture.”
“To maintain it.”
“You also taught me that systems survive by adapting.”
She entered a command.
A fourth slot opened.
CUSTOM RELEASE AVAILABLE.
REQUIRED KEYS:
TWIN AUTHENTICATION.
CARTER INDEX.
FOUNDER OVERRIDE.
Nell looked at the list.
“We have the twins and compass.”
“What is the founder override?” Piper asked.
Everyone looked at Marcus.
He smiled.
“Me.”
Michael’s voice came through another speaker.
“No. Marcus stole the founder identity.”
A hidden panel opened near the floor.
Michael crawled through with Officer Grant.
His shoulder was bleeding.
“The founder override belongs to Celia.”
Celia stared at him.
Marcus laughed.
“Even she does not know.”
Michael faced Nell.
“Celia Vale’s father founded the early research project. Her biometric record was used as the root access key.”
Piper looked at the woman who raised her.
“You were part of this before my father?”
Celia’s face collapsed.
“My father told me the program studied educational outcomes.”
“Did you know what it became?”
“Not until I was already trapped.”
Elena’s voice sharpened.
“You replaced me willingly.”
“I agreed to impersonate you for one month. Marcus said it would keep Piper safe while you recovered.”
“Recovered from being kidnapped?”
“I did not know he took you.”
“You remained in my life for seventeen years.”
“I tried to leave.”
“You signed my company away.”
“Because he threatened Piper.”
Elena’s grip on the compass tightened.
Piper looked at Celia.
“Was any part of being my mother real?”
Celia stepped toward her despite the guard holding her arm.
“Every part.”
“Even when you lied?”
“Especially when I hated myself for lying.”
The timer reached four minutes.
Leah opened the founder panel.
“Celia must provide blood and voice confirmation.”
Marcus moved toward the blue box.
Officer Grant aimed his weapon.
“Stop.”
Marcus stopped, but his expression remained calm.
“You think the release matters more than the physical archive.”
Michael looked toward the data columns.
“What did you do?”
“I prepared for failure.”
The floor began vibrating.
Leah checked the console.
“Thermal overload.”
Evan’s voice shouted through the speakers.
“He is destroying the servers.”
Marcus smiled.
“In three minutes, there will be nothing left to release.”
Michael ran toward the cooling controls.
Nell inserted the compass into the Carter index port.
The console asked for the paired watch.
“Evan has it,” she said.
“No,” Michael answered.
He removed the watch from his wrist and threw it to her.
Nell caught it.
“You were the second biometric key?”
“I was until Evan replaced my profile.”
She connected the watch.
The console scanned her fingerprint, then requested Evan’s.
The barrier above remained sealed.
Evan placed his hand against a remote scanner.
CARTER INDEX CONFIRMED.
Leah pulled Celia toward the founder panel.
Celia pressed her palm against the glass.
A red light appeared.
VOICE PHRASE REQUIRED.
“What phrase?” Piper asked.
Celia shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
Marcus glanced at the timer.
02:01.
Michael shouted over the alarms.
“Your father’s favorite sentence.”
Celia closed her eyes.
Then she spoke.
“Nothing hidden remains harmless.”
FOUNDER OVERRIDE CONFIRMED.
CUSTOM RELEASE READY.
SELECT PARAMETERS.
Hundreds of categories appeared across the screen.
Financial crimes.
Assaults.
Kidnappings.
Medical records.
Student conditioning footage.
Witness identities.
Family surveillance.
Piper stared at the options.
“We cannot select all of this in two minutes.”
Leah placed both hands on the console.
“I can create a filter.”
“Based on what?” Nell asked.
“Legal relevance.”
“Who defines it?”
“The system.”
Michael shouted, “Do not trust the program to define guilt.”
Evan answered, “Then use human review.”
“There is no time.”
The timer reached one minute.
Marcus suddenly struck Officer Grant and grabbed his weapon.
He aimed at the data columns.
“Step away from the console.”
Nobody moved.
Marcus fired.
The bullet shattered the cooling control.
Steam erupted through the chamber.
Leah screamed as the console burned her hand.
Piper pulled her away.
The custom release screen began disappearing.
Nell saw only one remaining command.
TRANSFER ARCHIVE TO EXTERNAL GUARDIANS.
She could press it.
But she did not know who the guardians were.
The timer reached ten seconds.
Marcus aimed at Nell.
Piper stepped into his line of fire.
“Move,” he ordered.
“No.”
“You are still my daughter.”
“That is why you won’t shoot.”
Marcus’s expression became empty.
May you like
Piper realized she was wrong.
He pulled the trigger.
