Chapter 13 - THE SHOT NO ONE EXPECTED

The gun fired.
Piper fell.
Nell screamed.
But no blood appeared on Piper’s chest.
Celia stood behind her, one hand pressed against her own side.
She had pushed Piper away at the last instant.
The bullet struck Celia beneath the ribs.
Marcus stared at her.
Celia collapsed.
Piper caught her before she hit the floor.
“Mom.”
It was the first time Piper had used the word without bitterness.
Celia gasped for breath.
Marcus raised the weapon again.
Officer Grant tackled him.
They crashed into the damaged console.
The timer reached zero.
Every screen went black.
For one terrible second, nothing happened.
Then the blue box opened.
Inside was no memory drive.
Only a small transmitter.
The archive lights pulsed.
RELEASE SEQUENCE UNDEFINED.
SEARCHING FOR EXTERNAL GUARDIANS.
Nell looked at Evan through the upper glass.
“What did it choose?”
“I don’t know.”
The data columns began sending streams of information into the transmitter.
Leah knelt beside the console.
“The system is locating dormant guardian accounts.”
“Whose accounts?” Michael asked.
“People registered by the original founders.”
Celia gripped Piper’s sleeve.
“Stop it.”
Piper pressed her hands against the wound.
“We need a doctor.”
Elena knelt on Celia’s other side.
For a moment, the two women looked at each other.
One had given birth to Piper.
The other had raised her.
Both had been manipulated by the same man.
Elena removed her jacket and pressed it against Celia’s wound.
“Keep pressure here.”
Piper stared at her.
“Help her.”
“I am.”
“Do not let her die.”
Elena’s face softened.
“I won’t.”
Marcus and Officer Grant continued struggling near the console.
Michael pulled Marcus away and struck him hard across the face.
Marcus fell but laughed.
“You still think this ends with me.”
Michael aimed the weapon at him.
“It should have ended years ago.”
Nell stepped between them.
“Do not kill him.”
“He will escape.”
“Then we expose him.”
“The archive may already be destroyed.”
Marcus wiped blood from his mouth.
“The archive was never the only protection I had.”
Evan found a manual release and opened the barrier.
He descended from the platform with Mr. Hale.
Nell faced him.
“What are external guardians?”
“I found references to seven accounts, but five were inactive.”
“Who controls the other two?”
“I never identified them.”
The transmitter displayed a connection.
GUARDIAN ONE ACCEPTED.
DATA TRANSFER: 12 PERCENT.
Michael checked the console.
“Can we stop it?”
Leah shook her head.
“The system is routing through an external satellite network.”
GUARDIAN TWO ACCEPTED.
DATA TRANSFER: 19 PERCENT.
Piper looked up from Celia.
“Will they receive everything?”
“Not the entire archive,” Evan said. “The system is dividing access. Each guardian gets different sections.”
“Then no one can expose the complete truth.”
“Unless the guardians cooperate.”
Marcus laughed again.
“You just handed the most powerful blackmail system in the country to strangers.”
Nell stared at the transmitter.
“Who selected them?”
“My father’s original project,” Celia whispered.
Her face had become pale.
Elena pressed harder against the wound.
“Save your strength.”
Celia ignored her.
“The founders believed no single person should control the archive. Guardian identities were passed secretly through families.”
Michael looked at her.
“Your father told you who they were?”
“Only one.”
“Who?”
Celia looked toward Mr. Hale.
Everyone turned.
Mr. Hale’s face became still.
Marcus smiled.
“Now we finally reach the interesting part.”
Nell stared at her teacher.
“You are a guardian?”
Mr. Hale did not answer.
Evan moved between him and the console.
“Hale?”
Mr. Hale removed his glasses.
“There are things you do not understand.”
“That sentence is becoming very popular,” Nell said.
The transmitter confirmed another stage.
GUARDIAN ONE DOWNLOAD COMPLETE.
Mr. Hale’s phone vibrated.
He looked at the screen but did not touch it.
Piper rose slowly, leaving Elena to help Celia.
“You received part of the archive.”
Mr. Hale lowered the phone.
“Yes.”
“What files?”
“I do not know yet.”
“Show us.”
“I cannot.”
Nell stepped toward him.
“Why?”
“Because guardian protocols require separation.”
“Those protocols were written by people who experimented on children.”
“And if I break them, the second guardian receives full control.”
“Who is the second guardian?”
Mr. Hale looked at Marcus.
Marcus appeared almost delighted.
“You should ask Nell’s mother.”
Nell’s heart stopped.
“My mother?”
A screen activated beside the transmitter.
The live feed showed their home again.
This time, Nell’s mother was not tied up.
She stood inside Evan’s bedroom, holding an identical blue box.
She looked directly into the camera.
“I’m sorry, Nell.”
Then she entered a code.
GUARDIAN TWO DOWNLOAD COMPLETE.
SYSTEM TRANSFER FINISHED.
Every data column went dark.
The entire archive disappeared from Westbridge.
Nell looked at her father.
“You said Mom knew nothing.”
Michael’s face showed genuine shock.
“I believed she didn’t.”
Evan stared at the screen.
Their mother opened a hidden compartment inside his bedroom wall.
Rows of files were stored behind it.
She had not received the archive for the first time.
She had been preparing for it.
Marcus looked at Nell.
“Your family built this prison long before I inherited it.”
Security alarms sounded above them.
Officer Grant checked his radio.
“Police have entered the school.”
“How?” Piper asked.
Mr. Hale held up his phone.
“I transmitted an emergency package when the guardian account activated.”
Marcus’s confidence finally weakened.
Michael restrained him with plastic ties.
“You are finished.”
Marcus looked at the dark data columns.
“No.”
He turned toward Piper.
“You still do not know which daughter the program was truly designed to test.”
Piper looked at Leah.
May you like
Marcus smiled.
“One of you was never born to Elena.”
