Chapter 11 - THE TWIN WHO SURVIVED

Piper stared at Leah as though looking into a damaged mirror.
The resemblance was undeniable, but their expressions were completely different.
Piper’s face showed anger even when she was afraid.
Leah’s smile remained calm.
Too calm.
“You died in a fire,” Piper said.
“That was the story.”
“You knew about me?”
“My entire life.”
Piper looked at Elena.
“You said you were searching for me.”
“I was.”
“But you knew Leah was alive?”
“I learned two years ago.”
“And you did not tell her about me?”
Leah answered instead.
“I did not want to meet you.”
Piper flinched.
“Why?”
“Because you became exactly what the program predicted.”
Marcus looked pleased.
Piper turned on him.
“What did it predict?”
“That attention would become your primary survival mechanism,” Leah said. “You learned to control groups through humiliation, loyalty tests and fear of exclusion.”
“You speak like a report.”
“I wrote part of the report.”
Piper’s confusion deepened.
Leah moved toward the central console.
“After the fire, I was raised inside a research facility. I studied the same system that studied us.”
“They kept you prisoner.”
“They educated me.”
“They stole your life.”
“They gave me purpose.”
Piper laughed bitterly.
“You sound like him.”
Marcus did not deny it.
Nell looked at the timer.
18:49.
“What happens when Piper and Leah authenticate?”
“The archive becomes editable,” Elena said.
“Then whose version will be released?”
“That depends on who controls the console.”
Marcus gestured toward the blue box.
“I do.”
Elena still held Nell’s compass.
“Not yet.”
Nell studied her.
Elena had brought the compass to B3.
She claimed she wanted to protect Piper, yet she stood near Marcus without restraints.
“What did he offer you?” Nell asked.
Elena looked at her.
“Freedom.”
“You escaped months ago.”
“Leaving a cell is not freedom when every record says you are someone else.”
Marcus had erased her identity.
Without the archive, Elena could not prove who she was or reclaim her company.
“You want your life back,” Nell said.
“I want the truth.”
“All of it?”
Elena’s eyes hardened.
“All of it.”
Michael’s warning had been correct.
She wanted the complete archive released.
Celia spoke from beside the guards.
“Elena, innocent children are in those files.”
“So was my child.”
“You will punish them for what Marcus did?”
“I will make hiding impossible.”
Piper looked at the woman who gave birth to her.
“You are willing to expose everything that happened to me?”
“It proves what they did.”
“It also lets millions of strangers watch it.”
Elena hesitated.
Only briefly.
“That is the price of accountability.”
Piper’s face closed.
Nell recognized the moment trust died.
Marcus noticed too.
He stepped closer to his daughter.
“You see now why I protected you from her.”
Piper turned away from both parents.
“You did not protect me. Either of you.”
The chamber speakers activated.
Evan’s voice said, “Good. She finally understands.”
A panel above the console opened.
Evan appeared on a maintenance platform overlooking the room.
Michael stood beside him.
Mr. Hale and Officer Grant were behind them.
Marcus’s guards raised their weapons.
Michael aimed his own.
“Anyone fires, Evan drops the archive cooling system.”
Marcus looked upward.
“You would destroy decades of research.”
“Yes.”
“You once believed in it.”
“I once believed information could save people.”
“And now?”
“I learned that men like us always claim the right to decide who should be sacrificed.”
Evan inserted his drive into the overhead terminal.
The console flashed.
RELEASE VERSION THREE DETECTED.
Marcus reached for the controls.
Leah stopped him.
“Authentication is required.”
Piper looked at her twin.
“You are helping him.”
“I am preventing uncontrolled release.”
“You lived inside his facility.”
“I understand what is at stake.”
“You understand what he taught you.”
Leah’s calm expression cracked.
“You grew up with everything.”
“Everything except the truth.”
“You had a family.”
“A false mother and a father who turned me into entertainment.”
“At least someone held you when you cried.”
Piper fell silent.
Leah’s pain finally appeared.
The sisters were not opposites because of nature.
They had been deliberately wounded in different ways.
The timer reached fifteen minutes.
Evan shouted from above.
“Nell, the compass must connect to the lower port.”
Elena held it tighter.
Marcus said, “Do not move.”
Nell stepped toward Elena.
“Give it to me.”
“You will select Evan’s version.”
“Yes.”
“You trust him to decide which secrets matter?”
“I trust him more than you.”
“That is not the same as trusting him enough.”
“No one should control the archive alone.”
“Then release everything.”
Piper faced her mother.
“No.”
Elena’s expression hardened.
“You do not understand.”
“I understand that you care more about proving what happened than what happens to us afterward.”
“I spent seventeen years underground because of you.”
Piper recoiled.
Elena realized what she had said.
But the words could not be taken back.
Marcus reached for the compass.
Celia threw herself into him.
A guard fired.
The shot struck the console.
Sparks exploded.
Every light in the chamber turned red.
SYSTEM DAMAGE DETECTED.
AUTOMATIC RELEASE IN 10:00.
A blast door began closing between the upper platform and the main floor.
Evan threw his drive downward.
Nell caught it.
Michael and Evan disappeared behind the steel barrier.
Piper ran toward the console.
Leah seized her arm.
“The twin authentication must happen now.”
“How?”
Leah placed her hand on a glass panel.
A needle emerged.
Piper stared at it.
“Blood authentication.”
Leah nodded.
“Both of us.”
Marcus reached for Piper.
Nell stepped between them and drove her shoulder into his chest.
They fell against the console.
The blue box slid across the floor.
Celia kicked it toward Piper.
Elena still held the compass.
The timer reached nine minutes.
Then a voice came through Nell’s hidden earpiece.
Mr. Hale.
“Nell, do not connect Evan’s drive.”
She froze.
“Why?”
“Because we opened it.”
A burst of static followed.
Mr. Hale’s next words were barely audible.
“The third version does not protect the innocent.”
Nell looked up at the sealed platform.
May you like
“What does it do?”
“It selects new controllers.”
