Chapter 5: Daniel Faces the Ruins
The next morning, Daniel sat alone in the nursery.
He had not slept.
The crib was still unassembled. The cream wall Clara had chosen looked soft and painful in the morning light.
On the floor beside him lay two reports.
The fake one.
And the real one.
He had read them again and again, searching for anything that could make him less guilty.

Daniel found the ring at dawn on the wet steps. He picked it up and placed it in his pocket.

Daniel stared at her.

“You gave me fear and called it wisdom.”

“You made me lonely.”
For the first time, Evelyn looked truly hurt.
But Daniel did not soften.
“My wife stood pregnant in the rain because I trusted you.”
Evelyn lifted her chin.
“She will leave you anyway.”
Daniel swallowed.
“Maybe. But from now on, I will protect her even if she never forgives me.”
That day, Daniel removed Evelyn’s authority from the household, the family office, and all matters connected to Clara and the baby. He gave Dr. Reid permission to cooperate fully with the clinic’s investigation.
Then he tried calling Clara.
She did not answer.
He wrote messages and deleted them.
What could he say?
Sorry I believed a lie?
Sorry I humiliated you?
Sorry I became the man I promised never to be?
That evening, Mrs. Alvarez entered his study.
“Is she safe?” Daniel asked.
“Yes.”
“The baby?”
“Yes.”
Relief almost broke him.
Mrs. Alvarez looked at him with deep disappointment.
“She waited for you last night,” she said.
Daniel looked up.
“What?”
“She kept saying, ‘He will ask the doctor. He will believe me. He just needs time.’”
Daniel closed his eyes.
Mrs. Alvarez’s voice softened.
“She defended your love longer than you did.”
After she left, Daniel sat in silence.
