Chapter 4: The Doctor Arrives With the Truth

Dr. Samuel Reid received Clara’s voicemail as soon as his plane landed.
Her voice was calm, but he heard fear beneath it.
“Someone has shown Daniel a report from your clinic saying he is not the father of my baby. That report is not in my portal. Please help me before this destroys my family.”
Dr. Reid immediately called his office manager.
“Pull Clara Harrington’s file,” he ordered. “Every access log. Every printed document.”
Twenty minutes later, she called back.
“Doctor, there’s a problem.”
“What kind of problem?”
“There was an unauthorized print request under your credentials.”
Dr. Reid froze.
“I was out of town.”
“I know. The file was accessed through the VIP family document system.”
The Harringtons had access to that system.
“What was printed?” he asked.
“A preliminary template connected to another case. Someone changed the patient details.”
Dr. Reid’s blood ran cold.
“Send me Clara’s real final report now.”
When he opened the file, the truth was clear.
Daniel Harrington was the father.
Dr. Reid called Daniel.
No answer.
He called Clara.
No answer.
Then he called the mansion.
A staff member answered shakily.
“This is Dr. Reid. I need to speak to Mr. Harrington immediately.”
“I’m sorry, sir,” the staff member whispered. “Mrs. Harrington is outside.”
“Outside where?”
“At the front entrance.”
“In this storm?”
Silence.
“Yes, sir.”
Dr. Reid got into his car.
When he reached the mansion, rain was pouring so heavily the driveway looked like black glass. He saw Clara standing below the steps, one hand on her belly. Daniel stood above her. Evelyn stood behind him.
Dr. Reid ran out.
“Stop!” he shouted.
Daniel turned.
“Dr. Reid?”
The doctor held out the envelope.
“You need to read this before you say another word to your wife.”
Evelyn stepped forward.
“This is not the time.”
Dr. Reid looked at her coldly.
“No, Mrs. Harrington. This is exactly the time.”
Daniel opened the envelope.
His hands shook as he read.
His face went white.
“What does it say?” Evelyn asked, but her voice was no longer confident.
Dr. Reid spoke clearly.
“Clara’s baby is Daniel’s child. The report you were shown was falsified and switched.”
Daniel looked at Clara.
Then at the baby clothes in the rain.
Then at his mother.
“Tell me you didn’t,” he whispered.
Evelyn’s mask cracked.
“I was protecting you.”
The confession was not direct.
But it was enough.
Daniel staggered back.
“Protecting me?”
“She was going to trap you,” Evelyn said desperately. “Once the child came, she would have everything.”
Clara’s voice was quiet.
“I never wanted everything. I wanted a husband who came home.”
Daniel flinched.
Evelyn pointed at Clara.
“She turned you against me.”
“No,” Clara said. “You did that yourself.”
Daniel took one step down.
“Clara…”
She stepped back.
That small movement broke him.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I didn’t know.”
“You didn’t ask,” Clara replied.
“I was hurt.”
“So was I.”
“I thought—”
“You thought the worst of me before you fought for the truth.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“Please come inside. You’ll get sick. The baby—”
Clara looked at him.
“The baby and I needed your protection before the doctor arrived.”
Daniel had no answer.
Clara slowly removed her wedding ring.
“No,” Daniel whispered.
She placed it on the wet ground.
“You threw out your wife tonight,” she said. “But your mother was the one trying to erase your child.”
Then Clara turned away.
Mrs. Alvarez, the housekeeper, rushed out with an umbrella and wrapped a coat around Clara’s shoulders.
“I’ll take her,” she said firmly.
Daniel wanted to follow.
Dr. Reid stopped him.
“Let her leave with dignity,” the doctor said. “You already took enough from her tonight.”
Daniel watched Clara disappear into the rain.

The mansion behind him suddenly felt enormous.
And completely empty.
