Chapter 3: The Night Clara Was Cast Out

The next day, Daniel did not come home until evening.

When he arrived, he was not alone.

Evelyn had invited Daniel’s uncle, two family attorneys, and a private security officer. The grand living room looked like a courtroom.

Clara stood at the entrance, stunned.

“What is this?”

Daniel looked exhausted.

“We need to handle this privately.”

“Privately?” Clara said. “You brought your family and lawyers.”

The attorneys spoke in careful, cold words.

Temporary separation.

Discreet housing.

Public image.

Medical confirmation.

Every polite phrase meant the same thing.

Leave.

Clara looked at Daniel.

“Tell them to go.”

He did not.

Evelyn held the fake report in her hand.

“We are trying to protect everyone,” she said.

“No,” Clara replied. “You are trying to erase me before the truth arrives.”

Daniel’s uncle cleared his throat.

“Clara, emotions are high.”

“I am pregnant, humiliated, and falsely accused in my own home,” Clara said. “Of course emotions are high.”

Evelyn’s face tightened.

“She should leave tonight.”

Daniel turned to his mother.

“Mother—”

“It is best,” Evelyn insisted. “The staff knows. The family knows. If she stays, this becomes worse.”

Clara stared at Daniel.

“Say no.”

Daniel looked at the floor.

“I think space would be best.”

Clara stepped back as if he had struck her.

“Space?”

“Just until we know the truth.”

“We know the truth,” Clara said. “You just don’t want to believe it.”

Evelyn sighed.

“Please stop making Daniel suffer.”

Clara turned to her.

“You don’t get to say his name like you love him while destroying his marriage.”

Daniel snapped.

“Enough!”

The room went silent.

Clara looked at him.

His face was full of anger, pain, and confusion.

“I can’t do this anymore,” he said. “Every time I ask for an explanation, you attack my mother.”

“Because she is lying.”

“She raised me.”

“I married you.”

“She has never betrayed me.”

Clara’s voice became small.

“And I have?”

Daniel’s silence answered.

Something inside Clara went still.

She no longer begged.

She went upstairs and packed. Clothes. Documents. Prenatal vitamins. The small yellow baby blanket she had bought after the first ultrasound.

When she came back down, rain was beating against the windows.

Daniel stood near the door.

“You can stay at the guesthouse,” he said quietly.

Clara looked at him.

“Am I your wife or a problem you want hidden from the neighbors?”

Evelyn opened the front door.

Rain rushed inside.

Clara stepped onto the marble steps with her suitcase.

Daniel followed.

“Tell me the truth,” he said one last time.

Clara turned.

“The truth is inside me,” she said, touching her belly. “And one day, when our child asks where you were when I needed you, I hope you have the courage to answer.”

Daniel’s face twisted.

Then anger swallowed his shame.

He grabbed the suitcase from her hand and threw it down the steps.

“Get out,” he said. “If you can lie about my child, you can leave my house.”

The suitcase burst open in the rain.

Baby clothes fell into puddles.

Lights turned on in neighboring houses.

Curtains moved.

Clara stood there, drenched and shaking.

Behind Daniel, Evelyn watched with quiet satisfaction.

She had finally gotten what she wanted.

Clara was outside.

Alone.

May you like

Humiliated.

And Daniel had done it with his own hands.
