Chapter 2: The Report That Broke Everything

Daniel was supposed to go with Clara to her prenatal appointment.

He had promised.

But that morning, Evelyn called about an urgent investor meeting. Daniel looked torn, but in the end, he left for work.

“I’ll make it up to you,” he said.

Clara smiled weakly.

“You always say that.”

To Clara’s surprise, Evelyn offered to take her instead.

“This is my grandchild too,” Evelyn said. “We should try to be family.”

Clara wanted to believe her.

At the clinic, Evelyn behaved kindly. She asked questions, spoke gently to the nurses, and even held Clara’s hand during the ultrasound.

When the baby’s heartbeat filled the room, Clara cried.

For a moment, Evelyn stared at the screen with something close to wonder.

Then the softness disappeared.

After the appointment, Dr. Reid explained that the clinic needed to repeat one routine test because of a clerical issue. He said it was nothing serious.

Clara agreed.

Evelyn listened carefully.

Too carefully.

A week later, Daniel began acting strangely.

He came home late. He avoided Clara’s eyes. He stopped touching her belly in the mornings. When she asked what was wrong, he said he was tired.

But tired did not look like suspicion.

One evening, Clara passed Daniel’s office and heard Evelyn speaking inside.

“I didn’t want to show you,” Evelyn said, “but you deserve the truth.”

Daniel’s voice was low.

“This can’t be right.”

Clara stepped into the doorway.

“What can’t be right?”

Daniel looked up.

His eyes were red.

Evelyn turned slowly, holding a medical report.

“Clara,” she said softly, “maybe you should sit down.”

Clara walked toward Daniel.

“What is happening?”

Daniel handed her the paper.

The words blurred at first. Clara forced herself to read.

The report claimed Daniel was not the biological father of her baby.

For a moment, the room spun.

“No,” Clara whispered. “This is fake.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“That’s what I wanted to believe.”

Clara stared at him.

“You think I cheated on you?”

Daniel looked away.

That hurt more than an accusation.

Evelyn sighed.

“Clara, confession would be better than dragging this family through scandal.”

Clara turned on her.

“You switched this.”

Evelyn placed a hand on her chest.

“Daniel, do you hear how she speaks to me?”

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

“Clara, stop.”

Stop.

Not Evelyn.

Not the lie.

Her.

Clara felt something inside her crack.

“I have never betrayed you,” she said. “Not once.”

Daniel’s voice was rough.

“Then explain the report.”

“Call Dr. Reid.”

“It’s late.”

“Then we go tomorrow.”

Evelyn stepped closer to Daniel.

“Maybe she should stay somewhere else tonight. Until everyone calms down.”

Clara looked at her husband, waiting for him to refuse.

He did not.

That silence was Evelyn’s first victory.

Clara went upstairs alone and called Dr. Reid’s office. It was after hours, so she left urgent messages. She checked her patient portal.

The report Evelyn had shown Daniel was not there.

That terrified her.

It meant the paper had not come through Clara.

It had come through someone else.

Someone who wanted Daniel to see it before Clara could defend herself.

That night, Daniel entered their bedroom after midnight.

“Daniel,” Clara said, standing. “Look at me. You know I would never do this.”

He closed his eyes.

“I don’t know what to believe.”

Clara’s tears finally fell.

“You believe your wife. That is what a husband does when the world turns against her.”

May you like

Daniel said nothing.

And in that silence, Evelyn’s lie became stronger than Clara’s truth.
