Chapter 1: The Woman They Never Wanted

Before the rain, Clara had believed love could protect her.
She believed it when Daniel Harrington proposed to her on a quiet beach in Malibu. He held her hands and promised that his family’s money, name, and rules would never come between them.
“You are my home,” he told her.
Clara believed him.
She was not the kind of woman the Harrington family expected Daniel to marry. She did not come from wealth. She had no famous last name. She had grown up in a small apartment with a hardworking mother and a father who had left before she could remember him.
Clara built her life by herself.
She became an interior designer, known for turning cold, expensive houses into warm homes. That was how she met Daniel. He hired her to redesign part of the Harrington mansion after his father died.
The mansion was beautiful, but lifeless.
Clara changed that. She added soft light, fresh flowers, family photographs, and gentle colors. Daniel noticed the rooms first. Then he noticed her.
Soon, he stayed late just to talk to her.
One year later, they were married.
At the wedding, Daniel’s mother, Evelyn Harrington, smiled for the cameras. But when Clara walked past, Evelyn whispered, “Pretty enough for a season. Not for a legacy.”
Clara heard her.
But she said nothing.
She tried to win Evelyn over. She invited her to lunch, sent flowers, asked about family traditions, and listened patiently to stories about Daniel’s childhood.
But Evelyn did not want peace.
She wanted control.
Daniel had always been her world after his father died. She advised him on business, friendships, money, and image. Every decision in Daniel’s life passed through Evelyn first.
Except Clara.
That was why Evelyn hated her.
At first, Daniel defended his wife.
“Mother, stop,” he would say. “Clara is my wife.”
But as months passed, his defense became weaker. He became busier. Evelyn was always near him, warning him about people who wanted his money, his name, his inheritance.
Clara wanted none of it.
She wanted him home for dinner.
She wanted his hand on hers without a phone in the other.
She wanted the man who had promised that she was his home.
When Clara found out she was pregnant, she thought everything would change.
She placed the pregnancy test inside a small white box and waited for Daniel in the dining room.
When he opened it, his face changed completely.
“A baby?” he whispered.
Clara nodded, crying and laughing at the same time.
Daniel pulled her into his arms.
“We’re having a baby,” he said.
For one beautiful second, Clara felt safe again.
Then she looked over Daniel’s shoulder.
Evelyn stood in the doorway.
No smile.
No tears.
Only calculation.
Later that night, Evelyn found Clara in the kitchen.
“You must be very pleased,” Evelyn said.
“I’m happy,” Clara replied.
“Of course. A child ties you to this family permanently.”
Clara’s smile faded.
“This baby is not a strategy.”
Evelyn stepped closer.
“Everything is a strategy when a fortune is involved.”
Clara placed a protective hand over her stomach.
“I love your son.”
Evelyn looked at her coldly.
“Love is easy to say when the mansion lights are warm and the bank accounts are full.”
Clara’s voice hardened.
“You don’t know anything about me.”
“I know enough,” Evelyn said. “And if this child is truly Daniel’s, you have nothing to fear.”

At the time, Clara thought it was just another insult.
She did not know it was the beginning of Evelyn’s plan.
