Chapter 9 - The Bride and the Con Man)

The first break came from Nathan.
Not because he became honest.
Because he became afraid.
At seven-thirty that evening, Claire received a call from an unknown number.
She almost ignored it.
Then answered.
"Hello?"
Silence.
Then a man's voice.
"You always hated me."
Claire stood.
"Nathan."
Across the room, Daniel looked up.
Claire signaled for silence.
Nathan laughed softly.
"Good memory."
"Where is Vanessa?"
"Interesting first question."
"Where is my sister?"
"You really should ask what she's planning."
Claire activated speaker quietly and placed the phone on the table.
Daniel began texting the detective.
Nathan continued.
"Vanessa isn't the victim you think she is."
"I haven't thought Vanessa was a victim since she locked my daughter in a room."
A pause.
"That was stupid."
"She threatened Lily."
"That wasn't me."
"You photographed my daughter."
Nathan did not answer.
Claire's voice hardened.
"Stay away from her."
"I never intended to hurt the kid."
"You watched her school."
"I watched Vanessa."
Claire froze.
"What?"
"Your sister was getting unpredictable."
Daniel leaned closer.
Claire kept her voice steady.
"So you followed her?"
"I had people follow everyone."
"Why?"
"Insurance."
Claire thought of the photographs.
Maybe Lily was not initially the target.
Maybe Nathan was documenting Vanessa's movements and anyone around her.
That did not make it acceptable.
But it changed the shape of the threat.
"The message about Lily."
Nathan laughed.
"Ask your sister."
Claire's skin went cold.
The threatening text had come after Vanessa disappeared.
Nathan claimed Vanessa sent it.
"Where is she?"
"I don't know."
"Liar."
"Not this time."
Claire heard traffic behind him.
A horn.
Wind.
He was outdoors or near a road.
"Why are you calling me?"
"Because Vanessa has something that belongs to me."
"The documents?"
"Money."
"How much?"
"Enough."
Claire waited.
Nathan continued.
"She moved it."
"From where?"
"Accounts."
"Stolen from elderly people?"
Silence.
That was answer enough.
"What do you want from me?"
"Tell Vanessa I will burn everything before I let her disappear with it."
Claire almost laughed.
"You think I'm talking to her?"
"You will."
"Why?"
"Because she needs Eleanor."
Claire looked at her mother.
Eleanor's face did not move.
"For what?"
"The original signature."
Claire remembered the forged transfer.
The bad copies.
The documents.
"Why?"
"Because the lender is asking questions."
"Your lender."
"Not mine anymore."
That was interesting.
Harbor Ridge had apparently sold or assigned some debt.
Vanessa needed a genuine signature to complete something.
Nathan sounded increasingly agitated.
"She thought the wedding would solve it."
"The sedatives."
He went silent again.
"You knew."
"I knew she wanted Eleanor cooperative."
"She replaced her medication."
"I didn't know that."
Claire did not believe him.
Then Nathan said something unexpected.
"Vanessa has always been worse than me."
Claire's jaw tightened.
"You don't get to make yourself innocent by making her guilty."
"I'm not innocent."
At least he admitted that.
"But I know where the line is."
"You stalked my daughter."
"To watch Vanessa."
"You stole homes."
Silence.
"You forged documents."
Silence.
Claire continued.
"There is no moral line left for you to stand on."
Nathan exhaled.
"Maybe."
"Then tell me where she is."
"I told you. I don't know."
"What does she need?"
"Eleanor's real signature before midnight tomorrow."
"Why midnight?"
"The transfer window closes."
Claire looked at Daniel.
He was already typing.
"Where?"
Nathan hesitated.
"Ask Daniel about Fairfax Continental."
Daniel's face changed.
Claire saw recognition.
"What is Fairfax Continental?"
Daniel answered quietly.
"A private bank."
Nathan heard him.
"Good. He's there."
Then the call ended.
Police traced it to a disposable phone.
Location unavailable.
Daniel immediately searched his records.
Fairfax Continental specialized in private wealth transfers.
One of Daniel's clients used it.
Vanessa knew that.
She had asked Daniel casual questions about private banking for months.
Now Daniel understood why.
At ten-oh-five, investigators obtained emergency cooperation from the bank.
A transfer had been scheduled.
Three million, eight hundred thousand dollars.
From a series of accounts connected to Harbor Ridge.
To an offshore trust.
Beneficiary name hidden behind a corporate entity.
But the authorization package included collateral documentation linked to Eleanor's property.
If Vanessa completed the paperwork, she could move money beyond easy reach.
Nathan wanted it.
Vanessa wanted it.
And Eleanor's signature was the missing piece.
Claire looked at her mother.
"We need to get you somewhere secure."
Eleanor shook her head.
"Already discussed."
"Mom."
"Police are outside."
"That's not enough."
Eleanor stood.
"Claire, I will not spend the rest of my life hiding because Vanessa decided I was easier to steal from than strangers."
"This isn't about pride."
"It's about not allowing her to control another decision."
Claire understood the anger.
She still hated it.
At eleven, Eleanor went upstairs.
Rachel slept in the guest room.
Daniel remained downstairs with Claire.
Neither spoke much.
At eleven-forty-three, Claire's phone vibrated.
A text.
From Vanessa.
No greeting.
No apology.
Just an address.
And beneath it.
Bring Grandma alone or Lily's school pictures go somewhere you won't like.
Claire showed Daniel.
He immediately called police.
Then a second message arrived.
One photograph.
Not Lily.
Eleanor.
Taken that evening through the kitchen window.
Claire looked toward the dark glass.
Someone had been outside the house while police sat on the street.
Then a third message.
You have one hour.
Eleanor came down the stairs wearing her coat.
Claire stared at her.
"You are not going."
Eleanor walked toward the table.
"Yes, I am."
"No."
"You said Vanessa no longer gets to control decisions."
"That does not mean walking into a trap."
Eleanor picked up her purse.
"Then we do not walk into it blindly."
Claire realized what her mother meant.
They would tell police.
They would cooperate.
They would let Vanessa believe Eleanor was coming alone.
For the first time since the wedding, Vanessa had reached out directly.
It was dangerous.
It was also the best chance they had to end the chase.
Claire looked at the address.
An abandoned office building owned by Harbor Ridge.
Twenty-three minutes away.
And beneath the location, Vanessa had added one final sentence.
May you like
Mom always chose you.
Tonight she chooses me.
