Chapter 2 - The Key in the Bride's Hand)

Claire had known her sister for thirty-four years.

She knew Vanessa's happy smile.

Her social smile.

Her angry smile.

Her embarrassed smile.

And the thin, almost expressionless smile she wore when she wanted someone to doubt what they had seen with their own eyes.

That was the smile on Vanessa's face now.

"Lily is upset," she said.

Claire stared at her.

"My daughter is locked in a room."

Vanessa kept walking.

"She threw a tantrum."

"So you locked her inside?"

"I didn't lock anyone anywhere."

Lily hit the door again.

"Aunt Vanessa did it."

Vanessa stopped.

"See?"

Claire stepped toward her.

"See what?"

"She's hysterical."

Claire's hands tightened.

Rachel lifted her phone higher without appearing to realize she was doing it.

The livestream continued.

Claire pointed at the door.

"Open it."

Vanessa sighed.

"I don't have time for this."

"Open the door."

"Claire."

"Now."

The wedding music had begun in the ceremony room.

Guests were being seated.

A coordinator appeared around the corner, saw Vanessa, then wisely disappeared again.

Vanessa reached for Claire's wrist.

"Come downstairs."

Claire pulled away.

Vanessa grabbed her again, harder.

"She's trying to ruin my wedding."

That sentence changed something in Claire.

Not because of the words themselves.

Because Lily was still crying behind the door.

And Vanessa could hear her.

Yet Vanessa's concern was the wedding.

Claire slapped Vanessa's hand away.

"Don't touch me."

Vanessa's eyes widened.

Claire had always been the controlled sister.

The diplomatic sister.

The one who prevented Christmas dinners from turning into arguments.

Vanessa was accustomed to Claire being reasonable.

She was not prepared for Claire to stop.

"Open the door."

"No."

The answer escaped Vanessa before she could hide it.

Rachel whispered, "Vanessa."

Vanessa looked at her.

"What?"

"You just said no."

"I mean I can't. I don't have the key."

Claire saw movement near Vanessa's waist.

Her right fist was clenched.

Something metallic appeared between her fingers.

A small brass key.

Claire did not ask.

She grabbed Vanessa's wrist.

Vanessa twisted violently.

"Let go."

"Give me the key."

"I said let go."

Claire forced Vanessa's fist upward.

The key dropped.

It struck the floor.

Rachel gasped.

Vanessa lunged.

Claire reached it first.

She shoved Vanessa backward with one hand and grabbed the key with the other.

Vanessa hit the wall.

Her expression changed completely.

The mask disappeared.

"You have no idea what you're doing."

Claire turned toward the door.

"I know exactly what I'm doing."

She inserted the key.

Behind her, Vanessa moved.

Rachel shouted, "Claire."

Claire spun just as Vanessa reached for her.

Claire blocked her, pushed her away, then unlocked the door.

The moment it opened, Lily ran into her.

Claire dropped to her knees.

Lily wrapped both arms around her neck.

Her entire body shook.

Claire pressed her face against her daughter's hair.

"I'm here."

Lily began crying harder.

"I tried yelling."

"I know."

"She said nobody would hear me because the music was starting."

Claire looked over Lily's shoulder.

Inside the dressing room, a broken plastic hanger lay near the door.

One of its sharp edges must have caused the scratch on Lily's forearm.

Claire touched it gently.

"Did she hurt you?"

Lily shook her head.

"No. I broke the hanger trying to open the door."

Claire kissed her forehead.

Then Lily pulled away.

"Mom, I need to show you."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"No."

Claire stood.

Lily ran to the makeup table.

Vanessa rushed toward her.

Rachel moved between them instinctively.

"What is wrong with you?"

"Get out of my way."

Lily reached behind a black makeup case.

Her hand disappeared for a moment.

Then she turned.

Two medication bottles.

Claire recognized one immediately.

Eleanor's prescription bottle.

The other was smaller.

Clear plastic.

No visible label.

Lily held them tightly.

"I saw her switch Grandma's pills."

Everything went still.

Vanessa's eyes widened.

Claire looked at her sister.

"What?"

"She's lying."

Lily shook her head.

"No."

"Lily, stop."

Claire stepped in front of Vanessa.

"Don't tell my daughter to stop."

"You don't know what she thinks she saw."

"Then tell me."

Vanessa looked toward Rachel's phone.

Her expression shifted.

"Turn that off."

Rachel glanced at the screen.

Thousands of seconds of wedding preparations had already streamed to relatives and friends.

Rachel's thumb hovered near the control.

Claire said, "Leave it."

Vanessa looked at her.

"You cannot be serious."

"I said leave it."

Vanessa's breathing changed.

Claire noticed.

There were moments when a person's fear betrayed the size of their secret.

This was one of them.

Lily held up Eleanor's bottle.

"I was getting Grandma's shawl. Aunt Vanessa was at the sink."

Vanessa shook her head.

"She's confused."

"She poured Grandma's pills out."

"No."

"Then she put pills from this bottle into Grandma's."

"Lily."

"And then she saw me."

Vanessa stepped forward.

Claire blocked her again.

Lily continued.

"She asked what I saw."

Claire felt cold.

"What did you say?"

"I said everything."

Rachel closed her eyes briefly.

Claire understood immediately.

Vanessa had locked Lily inside because Lily had not known how to lie.

She had told Vanessa the truth.

And Vanessa had panicked.

"Where was Grandma's bottle after that?" Claire asked.

Lily pointed.

"She put it in her bag."

Claire remembered Vanessa in the hallway ten minutes earlier.

The brown bottle.

Her quick explanation.

She had been bringing it to Eleanor.

Claire turned.

"You were going to give Mom those pills."

Vanessa's voice became quiet.

"They're vitamins."

Lily looked confused.

Dr. Grant's voice came from the hallway.

"Those are not vitamins."

They all turned.

Michael Grant stood at the ceremony entrance.

May you like

His attention fixed on the bottles.

And the moment Vanessa saw him, Claire watched pure terror cross her sister's face.
