Chapter 11 - The Wedding Dress in the Rain)

Vanessa reached the roof.

Nobody expected that.

The service staircase ended beside a mechanical access door, and she burst through it into heavy rain.

Her wedding dress immediately darkened with water.

Claire followed behind two officers.

She should not have.

She knew that.

But when she saw Vanessa disappear through the roof door, every memory of the past two days followed her.

Lily crying.

Eleanor's empty safe.

The school photograph.

The sedatives.

The forged signatures.

Claire climbed.

Outside, rain struck the roof in silver sheets.

Vanessa stood near a ventilation structure holding the laptop beneath part of her dress.

"Stop."

She turned.

Claire emerged behind the officers.

"Vanessa."

Her sister laughed.

"You again."

"Put the computer down."

Vanessa looked at the officers.

"They'll take everything."

Claire stared at her.

"It isn't yours."

"I earned it."

"You stole it."

Vanessa's face twisted.

"Do you know how much money passed through Nathan's hands? Millions. Tens of millions. And he treated me like an assistant."

Claire almost could not believe what she was hearing.

"People lost their homes."

"They signed papers."

"Some of them didn't."

"They were careless."

"They trusted you."

Vanessa shouted.

"That is not my problem."

Claire stopped.

There it was.

No excuse left.

No insecurity.

No childhood grievance.

No manipulation by Nathan.

Vanessa knew.

She had known.

And she had chosen.

"Was Grandma careless?"

Vanessa's face changed slightly.

Claire stepped closer.

"Was Lily careless?"

"Don't."

"You locked her inside a room."

"I needed ten minutes."

"She was terrified."

"I wasn't going to hurt her."

"You already did."

Vanessa looked away.

Rain ran down her face.

For the first time, she seemed to understand that there would be no version of this conversation where Claire comforted her.

No older sister arriving to explain.

No family dinner where everyone eventually pretended it had not been that bad.

Claire's voice dropped.

"You are done using us to prove you're the victim."

Vanessa clutched the laptop.

"I have nothing."

"You had everything."

"Daniel will never speak to me again."

"He shouldn't."

"Grandma hates me."

"She doesn't."

Vanessa looked confused.

Claire almost smiled sadly.

"That's the worst part, Vanessa. She still loves you."

Vanessa's lips trembled.

"Then why did she choose you?"

"She didn't."

"She always did."

"No."

Claire moved one step closer.

"She chose truth."

Vanessa stared at her.

"You could choose it too."

For one impossible moment, Claire thought she might.

Vanessa looked down at the laptop.

At the rain.

At the officers.

Then she held it out.

Claire exhaled.

An officer stepped forward.

Vanessa suddenly pulled it back and slammed it against the metal railing.

Once.

Twice.

The screen shattered.

The officer grabbed her wrist before she could throw it over the edge.

Vanessa screamed.

Not fear.

Rage.

"You don't get it."

The officers restrained her.

Claire stood in the rain watching her sister fight.

The white wedding dress wrapped around Vanessa's legs.

Mud streaked the hem.

Lace tore at one shoulder.

The image would have seemed tragic from far away.

A bride arrested on her wedding night.

Up close, Claire saw what it truly was.

A woman finally meeting consequences she could not charm away.

Downstairs, Nathan was caught near the loading dock.

Marissa Vale was arrested the following morning.

The laptop was damaged but recoverable.

The stolen funds had not yet completed transfer.

Over the following weeks, investigators froze accounts connected to Harbor Ridge.

Victims were contacted.

Documents were examined.

Cases once dismissed were reopened.

Claire believed the worst was over.

She was wrong.

Because three weeks after Vanessa's arrest, Daniel called.

"Claire, you need to come over."

She found him sitting at his dining-room table.

A small package lay in front of him.

No return address.

Inside was a flash drive.

Daniel inserted it into a laptop.

One video file.

The date stamp was six months old.

Vanessa appeared on screen.

She sat in a car.

Nathan was beside her.

They were arguing.

The audio was poor.

Daniel increased volume.

Nathan said, "If Eleanor won't sign, find another way."

Vanessa answered.

"I will."

"How?"

A pause.

Then Vanessa smiled.

"My sister has a daughter who sees everything."

Claire's blood ran cold.

Nathan frowned.

"What does the kid have to do with it?"

Vanessa looked directly toward the camera without realizing it was recording.

"Kids are useful. Adults believe anything when they're scared for their children."

Claire stopped breathing.

The photographs of Lily.

The threats.

The locked door.

This had not been panic.

Not entirely.

Vanessa had considered using Lily months before the wedding.

Then the video continued.

Nathan leaned back.

"You wouldn't."

Vanessa's smile disappeared.

"You still don't understand me."

Claire watched her sister's face on the screen.

And finally accepted the truth she had resisted since childhood.

May you like

Nathan had not created Vanessa.

He had simply found someone who already believed love was leverage.
