Chapter 10 - Grandma's Signature)

The plan changed three times before midnight.

Police wanted Eleanor nowhere near the building.

Eleanor refused.

Claire wanted to accompany her openly.

Vanessa's instructions forbade it.

Eventually they agreed on a compromise.

Eleanor would enter the lobby alone.

Officers would remain close.

Claire would be inside the building through a rear entrance with detectives.

Daniel would wait outside.

Rachel stayed with Lily at a protected location.

At twelve-forty-two in the morning, Eleanor walked through the front doors of the abandoned Harbor Ridge office.

The building had once been elegant.

Marble lobby.

Glass offices.

Dark wood.

Now half the lights were out.

Eleanor carried her purse.

Inside was a phone transmitting audio.

"Vanessa?"

No answer.

She walked farther.

A light appeared beneath a conference-room door.

Eleanor opened it.

Vanessa sat at the table.

Still wearing her wedding dress.

The veil was gone.

Her makeup had smeared.

Her hair had loosened.

A laptop sat open before her.

Beside it lay documents.

A pen.

And Eleanor's missing jewelry box.

Eleanor stopped.

Vanessa looked up.

"Close the door."

Eleanor did.

"Where is Nathan?"

Vanessa's expression flickered.

"I don't know."

"Then why did you bring me here?"

"I need one signature."

Eleanor laughed softly.

"One."

"Grandma."

"No. I want to understand the price."

Vanessa's jaw tightened.

"What?"

"My house. My identity. My medication. My granddaughter locked in a room. My great-granddaughter threatened."

Vanessa looked away.

"Nobody threatened Lily."

"You sent the message."

Silence.

Eleanor understood.

Claire, listening through an earpiece from a nearby room, closed her eyes.

Nathan had told the truth about that part.

Vanessa continued.

"I needed Claire scared enough to stop."

"You frightened a child."

"I used a photograph."

"You locked her inside a room."

"Because she wouldn't listen."

Eleanor leaned forward.

"She is eight."

Vanessa suddenly slammed her hand against the table.

"And nobody ever listens to me."

The sound echoed.

Eleanor did not flinch.

Vanessa stood.

"Do you know what it's like to spend your entire life being the second person in every room?"

Eleanor stared at her.

"Claire was responsible."

"There. Claire."

"Claire worked."

"Claire was perfect."

"Claire was not perfect."

"To you she was."

Eleanor shook her head.

"No. Claire simply stopped expecting other people to rescue her from consequences."

Vanessa's eyes filled.

"You always liked her more."

"This is what you tell yourself?"

"It is true."

"Then why did I pay your college tuition after you lost your scholarship?"

Vanessa looked away.

"Why did I let you live in my house after Nathan left?"

Silence.

"Why did I help pay your debts the first time?"

Vanessa's face changed.

Claire heard that.

The first time.

She had not known.

Eleanor continued.

"Why did I tell Claire not to judge you when you came home crying?"

Vanessa whispered, "Because you pitied me."

"No."

Eleanor's voice hardened.

"Because I loved you."

Vanessa flinched.

"You loved me when I was useful."

"That is what you did to us."

The words landed.

For a few seconds, Vanessa looked younger.

Not thirty-four.

Fourteen.

Angry because Claire got praised.

Jealous because someone else had what she wanted.

Then the hardness returned.

She pushed the document forward.

"Sign."

"No."

"Grandma."

"No."

"If you sign, this ends."

Eleanor looked at the page.

"Does Nathan know about the offshore trust?"

Vanessa froze.

That was enough.

Eleanor smiled faintly.

"So he doesn't."

Vanessa grabbed the document.

"You don't understand."

"I understand perfectly. You planned to steal from the thief who taught you to steal."

Vanessa's breathing quickened.

"That money is mine."

"None of it is yours."

"I worked for years."

"Stealing."

"Building."

"Fraud."

"Surviving."

Eleanor's voice softened.

"Vanessa, you had a family."

Vanessa looked at her.

"You had a home."

No answer.

"You had people who loved you."

Vanessa's eyes filled again.

"And you decided love was worth less than money."

A noise came from the hallway.

Vanessa spun.

Claire froze in the adjacent office.

Police had not moved.

The noise came from somewhere else.

A door.

Footsteps.

Vanessa reached beneath the table.

Not for a weapon.

For a blue folder.

Then a male voice came from the darkness.

"She's right about one thing."

Nathan Morgan stepped into the conference room.

Eleanor looked at him.

Vanessa went completely still.

Nathan smiled.

"You were always going to steal from me."

Vanessa backed away.

"How did you find me?"

"You really think you're the only one who knows how to track a phone?"

Claire heard movement through the transmitter.

Detectives signaled.

Not yet.

Nathan walked toward the table.

"Give me the transfer credentials."

"No."

"Vanessa."

"They're mine."

Nathan laughed.

"You don't have anything without me."

"I have everything."

He glanced at Eleanor.

"Not yet."

Vanessa looked at the document.

Nathan understood.

He turned to Eleanor.

"So that's why she's here."

Eleanor remained seated.

"You should both know there are police outside."

Nathan's smile vanished.

Vanessa's head snapped up.

Claire silently cursed.

Eleanor had broken the plan.

But maybe intentionally.

Nathan looked toward the door.

Then at Vanessa.

"You set me up."

Vanessa shook her head.

"No."

He moved toward her.

Vanessa backed away.

And then Claire entered.

"Enough."

Vanessa stared at her.

"Claire?"

Nathan turned.

Detectives appeared behind Claire.

For one second, everything stopped.

Then Vanessa grabbed the laptop and ran through the side door.

Nathan ran the opposite direction.

Police split.

Claire moved toward Eleanor.

"Mom."

"I'm fine."

"What were you thinking?"

"That seemed like a good time to tell them."

Claire almost laughed from pure stress.

Then a crash sounded upstairs.

An officer shouted.

Claire looked toward the stairwell.

May you like

Vanessa was still running.

And she still had the laptop containing access to millions of stolen dollars.
