Chapter 4 - The Folder Under the Makeup Table)

Vanessa made it twenty feet before the train of her wedding dress caught beneath one heel.

She stumbled, grabbed the wall, recovered, then disappeared through the service corridor.

Daniel shouted her name.

Claire did not follow.

Her first instinct was Lily.

Always Lily.

She crouched.

"Are you okay?"

Lily nodded, though tears continued to run down her cheeks.

Claire looked at Rachel.

"Can you stay with her?"

Rachel immediately lowered the phone.

"Yes."

Claire turned to Eleanor.

"Mom?"

"I am not made of glass."

"That's not what I asked."

Eleanor looked toward the corridor Vanessa had used.

Her voice softened.

"I'm all right."

She wasn't.

Claire could see it.

But none of them yet understood the scale of what they had found.

Daniel did.

Or perhaps he understood one part before the others.

"The papers," he said.

Lily looked at him.

"What kind of papers?"

She described the folder.

Yellow tabs.

Eleanor's name.

Her driver's license.

House documents.

Daniel went pale.

Claire noticed.

"What?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Vanessa asked me something three weeks ago."

"What?"

"If I knew a notary."

Eleanor's eyes sharpened.

"Why?"

"She said you were updating estate documents."

"I am not."

Daniel looked sick.

Claire stared at him.

"You didn't think to mention this?"

"Why would I? She told me Eleanor wanted to simplify things before the wedding."

"Did you give her a name?"

Daniel swallowed.

"Yes."

Eleanor sat slowly on a decorative bench.

Rachel came out of the dressing room with Lily.

The livestream was finally off.

"What name?" Claire asked.

"Matthew Price. He works with my firm sometimes."

"When did Vanessa meet him?"

"Last Thursday."

Eleanor closed her eyes.

Claire felt anger climb through her chest.

"What did she have notarized?"

"I don't know."

"Find out."

Daniel pulled out his phone.

His hands shook.

While he called, Claire returned to the dressing room.

The place looked almost normal.

Makeup brushes.

Perfume.

Flowers.

A champagne glass.

Vanessa's veil.

Then Claire looked at the sink.

Several white tablets remained trapped near the drain.

She called Dr. Grant.

He entered carefully.

"Don't touch those."

Claire pointed.

"Lily said those were Mom's original pills."

Michael leaned closer.

He recognized them immediately.

"Yes."

Claire's stomach turned.

"So Vanessa actually did switch them."

"It appears so."

"What are the replacement pills?"

"I need proper identification."

"But you have an idea."

Dr. Grant remained silent.

Claire knew doctors.

Silence often meant the answer was too serious to speculate about.

"Michael."

He exhaled.

"They look similar to a prescription sedative."

Claire stared at him.

"What would happen if Mom took one?"

"If it's what I think it is, possibly dizziness, confusion, sleepiness."

"And if she took more?"

"I don't know the dose."

"Michael."

"Claire, we are not going to guess."

She looked at the sink.

Vanessa had thrown away Eleanor's real heart medication and filled the bottle with something that could make her appear confused.

Old.

Forgetful.

Unreliable.

Claire thought about the legal documents.

The accusation Vanessa had made minutes earlier.

You forget things.

The pieces aligned so quickly that Claire felt nauseated.

"She wanted Mom impaired."

Michael did not answer.

He did not need to.

Daniel returned.

His face told Claire the call had gone badly.

"What?"

"Matthew says Vanessa brought documents."

Eleanor stood.

"What documents?"

Daniel looked at her.

"A limited power of attorney."

Claire's body went cold.

Eleanor did not react immediately.

Then she laughed once.

A hard sound.

"Limited?"

Daniel looked ashamed.

"Financial authority. Property management. Medical decisions under certain conditions."

"I never signed that."

"He says you did."

"I did not."

Daniel rubbed his forehead.

"Matthew said Vanessa brought a woman who identified herself as Eleanor Bennett."

Nobody spoke.

Claire understood.

A woman.

Not Eleanor.

Vanessa had brought someone else to impersonate their grandmother.

Eleanor's face became white.

"Who?"

"He doesn't know her personally."

"Did he check identification?"

"Vanessa gave him a photocopy."

"The copy Lily saw," Claire said.

Daniel nodded.

Rachel whispered, "This was planned."

Claire looked at the room.

Suddenly every object felt contaminated.

The dress.

The flowers.

The champagne.

Vanessa had not panicked because Lily witnessed a spontaneous act.

She had been building something.

For weeks.

Maybe months.

Claire turned to Daniel.

"Why today?"

He looked confused.

"What?"

"Why switch Mom's medication on the wedding day?"

Dr. Grant answered.

"Because everyone would expect Eleanor to be tired."

Claire looked at him.

He continued.

"A long ceremony. Champagne. Emotional stress. If she became confused or sleepy afterward, no one might think it was unusual."

Eleanor stared toward the mirror.

"And if I signed something?"

Claire felt a chill.

"Or if someone claimed you signed something."

Daniel's phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

Matthew Price.

He answered immediately.

"What?"

They watched his expression change.

"Send it."

A pause.

"Now."

He ended the call.

"What?" Claire demanded.

Daniel opened his email.

A PDF arrived.

He stared at the first page.

Then looked at Eleanor.

"There was another document."

Eleanor's voice was quiet.

"What document?"

Daniel turned the phone toward them.

Claire read the title.

PROPERTY TRANSFER AGREEMENT.

Her mother's house.

The family house where Claire and Vanessa had grown up.

The property Eleanor owned free and clear.

The property Vanessa had begged Eleanor to sell six months earlier.

The property Eleanor refused to sell because she intended to leave it equally to both daughters.

The transfer listed Vanessa Morgan as recipient.

Effective immediately.

Claire looked at the signature.

It looked like Eleanor's.

Almost.

Eleanor leaned closer.

"That is not my signature."

Daniel scrolled.

"There is a witness."

"Who?"

He stopped.

Then his face changed again.

"Rachel Cole."

Rachel stared at him.

"What?"

Her phone slipped slightly in her hand.

"I never witnessed anything."

Daniel turned the screen.

Rachel's name was there.

Along with a signature.

A forged signature.

Rachel stared at it.

Then at the wedding livestream phone in her hand.

"This is why she wanted me busy today."

Claire looked toward the service corridor.

The bride was gone.

The ceremony was waiting.

And somewhere inside the estate, Vanessa had a folder containing fraudulent documents.

Dr. Grant sealed the pills inside a plastic evidence bag supplied by venue staff.

Then Eleanor said something that made Claire turn.

"My safe."

Claire stared at her.

"What about it?"

"The original deed is in my safe."

Daniel asked, "Who knows the combination?"

Eleanor's eyes moved slowly toward Claire.

"You."

May you like

Claire nodded.

"And Vanessa."
