Chapter 8 - The Maid Who Was Never a Maid

The discovery of the second child changed everything.

The fake pregnancy was no longer merely a scheme to gain control of the Moretti estate. Someone had designed Vanessa’s false child to distract Alessandro from a real child who might still be alive.

Rosa brought Emma to a secure guest room while Tomas doubled the guards around them.

Alessandro remained in the hidden nursery.

He touched the unfinished letter above the second crib.

Elena had painted the first line of an M.

Perhaps the child’s name had been intended to begin with that letter.

Perhaps it belonged to someone Alessandro had passed on the street without recognizing.

Rosa returned alone.

“You have been lying to me for three years,” Alessandro said.

“Yes.”

The honesty of the answer angered him more than a denial would have.

“You entered my house as a maid.”

“I entered your house to protect Emma.”

“Who were you before that?”

Rosa removed a thin chain from beneath her uniform. A small metal badge hung from it.

She had once worked as an investigator for the district attorney’s financial crimes unit.

“Elena hired me privately eight months before she died,” Rosa said.

“To investigate my family?”

“To investigate Saint Catherine’s Clinic.”

“What did you find?”

“Medical records had been altered on the night Emma was born. The second child was transferred from the maternity floor under an emergency authorization.”

“Signed by whom?”

“The digital record listed Elena. The physical document was missing.”

“Where was the baby taken?”

“The hospital claimed she was moved to intensive care. There was no record of her arrival.”

“Then someone took her out of the building.”

“Yes.”

Alessandro turned toward the projected image of the nurse.

“Did you identify that woman?”

“Her name was Miriam Cole. She disappeared two days after the birth.”

“Did Elena find her?”

“She found a bank account. Miriam received $250,000 from a Moretti subsidiary.”

“Controlled by Vittorio?”

“Approved through his division. But the final authorization came from Elena’s own executive credentials.”

“Forged.”

“Probably.”

“Who could forge them?”

“Celia. Vittorio. Your former chief of staff. Several members of the hospital board.”

“Why would anyone steal one of my children?”

Rosa looked at the trust document.

“To create an heir they could control.”

The plan had not worked as expected. The second child’s existence had been hidden, but the conspirators had not introduced her into the family.

Something had gone wrong.

Elena had begun searching.

Then her car went through a barrier on a mountain road.

The official investigation blamed heavy rain and mechanical failure.

Rosa never believed it.

“Why didn’t you come to me after Elena died?”

“She left instructions. I was to remain with Emma and watch for three signs.”

“What signs?”

“Someone using Elena’s signature. Someone attempting to alter Emma’s guardianship. And someone claiming a new Moretti child.”

All three had occurred in one night.

Alessandro struggled to control his anger.

“You could have prevented this.”

“I could not identify who was still involved.”

“You suspected Vittorio and Celia.”

“I suspected everyone.”

“Including me?”

Rosa met his eyes.

“Including you.”

The answer hurt because it made sense.

Elena had been surrounded by people who could access her accounts, her home, and her child. Alessandro had been traveling constantly in the year after Emma’s birth. He had left financial decisions to Vittorio and legal matters to Celia.

He had believed delegation was protection.

Instead, it had created darkness.

Tomas entered carrying the remains of the flower-covered box.

A guard had found it inside the old furnace room.

The maternity pillow had been burned, but part of the missing receipt survived.

The signature was destroyed.

The transaction code remained.

Tomas traced it to an online medical supplier.

“The order was placed from an address belonging to the Elena Moretti Foundation,” he said.

“Who manages that account?” Alessandro asked.

“Celia was the registered administrator.”

“Was?”

“She transferred control last month.”

“To whom?”

May you like

Tomas handed him the printed record.

The new administrator was Rosa Bellini.
