Chapter 14 - The Doors Alessandro Chose to Open

Alessandro reached the mansion to find guards surrounding the nursery.
Emma was safe.
Rosa had moved her into the hidden west-wing room moments before the power failed. A masked intruder had entered through the balcony and searched Emma’s bed.
The intruder escaped, leaving behind a syringe filled with a strong sedative.
No one could prove who had sent the person.
Vittorio was in custody.
Vanessa was under police supervision.
Celia had disappeared.
Lucia’s location was unknown.
The conspiracy had lost its most visible participants, but its oldest architect remained hidden.
Alessandro spent the next two days making choices his family had avoided for decades.
He released a public statement canceling his engagement to Vanessa.
He confirmed that fraudulent documents had been used in an attempt to manipulate the Moretti succession.
He cleared Rosa of wrongdoing and identified her as Elena’s private investigator and Emma’s legal protector.
Then he resigned temporarily from executive control of the family company.
Vittorio had always insisted that public vulnerability would destroy them.
Instead, the board voted unanimously to remove Vittorio as interim trustee.
Banks froze the suspicious accounts.
Investigators reopened Elena’s accident case.
Saint Catherine’s Clinic surrendered the records it had concealed.
Three administrators were arrested.
For the first time, Alessandro stopped protecting the Moretti name and began protecting the people who had suffered because of it.
He also amended Emma’s trust.
No undisclosed heir, guardianship review, marriage, or board decision could reduce her ownership.
Rosa would remain her guardian if anything happened to him.
Any second child proved to be Elena’s daughter would receive an equal share without placing Emma’s rights under review.
The family could no longer use one sister against the other.
Vanessa requested one final meeting before she was transferred to another facility.
She sat behind glass in a gray interview room.
“I suppose you came to tell me I lost,” she said.
“You did.”
She gave a weak smile.
“At least you finally learned how to say it.”
“Who came to you first?”
“Celia.”
“And who contacted you later?”
“The voice claiming to be the child’s mother.”
“Lucia?”
“I never saw her.”
“Did she know about the plan from the beginning?”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t she contact me directly?”
Vanessa looked at him with something close to pity.
“She believed you would choose the company over the truth.”
“She was wrong.”
“She wanted you to prove it.”
“By using my daughter?”
“By making the entire world watch you choose.”
The ballroom confrontation had not simply exposed Vanessa. It had forced Alessandro to act publicly, making it impossible for the family to bury the scandal.
“Where is the child?” he asked.
Vanessa shook her head.
“I don’t know.”
“What did Lucia promise you?”
“She promised that after I exposed Vittorio, I could disappear with the money.”
“You intended to betray him?”
“I intended to survive.”
“You helped him remove Emma.”
“I know.”
For the first time, Vanessa appeared unable to hide from what she had done.
“I told myself the documents would never be filed. I told myself Alessandro Moretti would always win before anyone touched his child.”
“You depended on me protecting Emma while you helped people target her.”
“Yes.”
He stood to leave.
Vanessa placed one hand against the glass.
“Celia gave me a message for you.”
Alessandro stopped.
“She said to search the unfinished wall in the second nursery.”
“What is inside it?”
“She wouldn’t tell me.”
“Why should I believe you?”
“Because Celia knew she might not return.”
Alessandro went back to the mansion.
Tomas examined the wall beneath the unfinished letter M.
The plaster was newer than the rest of the room.
Behind it, they discovered a narrow compartment.
Inside were hospital documents, photographs of the missing nurse, and a small video camera.
The final object was a silver music box.
When Alessandro opened it, Elena’s voice filled the nursery.
“If you found this, the first danger has passed.”
Alessandro sat beside the second crib.
Emma climbed onto his lap.
Rosa stood behind them.
Elena’s recording continued.
“But the person who took our daughter was never the greatest threat.”
The music box clicked.
“The greatest threat is the reason she was chosen.”
The recording ended.
Beneath the music mechanism, Alessandro found a sealed envelope.

Across the front, Elena had written:
For my daughters, when they are together.
