Chapter 15 - The Child at the Gate

Alessandro did not open the envelope.
Not yet.
It belonged to both girls.
Until the missing child stood beside Emma, breaking the seal would feel like taking something from her again.
Instead, he placed the letter inside the mansion’s most secure safe.
The next week brought consequences the Moretti family had avoided for years.
Vittorio was formally charged. He continued to deny involvement in Elena’s death, but admitted concealing the second child’s existence and helping Celia manipulate the succession documents.
Vanessa accepted an agreement requiring her to testify against him.
The clinic’s former director admitted that records had been altered on the night the twins were born.
According to his statement, one infant had been taken to the Belladonna Hotel after a woman presented emergency custody documents carrying Elena’s verified signature.
The director believed the woman was Elena.
Security footage later proved Elena had never left her hospital bed.
Someone else had used her face, voice, and credentials.
The nurse, Miriam Cole, transported the baby.
Celia intercepted the transfer at the hotel.
Lucia arrived minutes later.
What happened after that remained unclear.
Hotel footage had been erased.
The baby disappeared.
Miriam vanished.
Lucia abandoned her career and identity.
Celia spent three years moving money through secret accounts, apparently financing someone’s life in hiding.
Alessandro could not tell whether Celia had protected his daughter or helped keep her from him.
The answer depended on who had been hunting the child.
On the evening before October 18, Alessandro returned to the ballroom.
Workers had removed Vanessa’s decorations. The orchestra platform was empty. The secret door behind the family portrait remained open.
Emma sat on the floor building a tower from wooden blocks.
Rosa watched from a nearby chair.
The family portrait had been restored with Lucia visible at the edge.
Alessandro hated looking at it, but he refused to hide another face.
“Will my sister come tomorrow?” Emma asked.
“I hope so.”
“Does she know me?”
“I don’t know.”
“Does she have a purple bunny?”
“Maybe.”
Emma considered this.
“She can share mine.”
Alessandro sat beside her.
He had spent years believing wealth could build walls strong enough to protect his family.
Now every safe room, secret passage, locked account, and private agreement seemed like another place where the truth could be buried.
At 11:42 that night, the mansion intercom sounded.
Tomas’s voice came through.
“Sir, there is someone at the north gate.”
“Who?”
“A woman.”
Alessandro stood.
“Is she alone?”
Tomas did not answer immediately.
“No, sir.”
Emma dropped her wooden block.
Alessandro looked toward the dark windows.
Outside, rain had begun falling across the estate.
“What does she want?”
“She says she knew Elena.”
“Name?”
“She won’t give one.”
“Can you see her face?”
“She is wearing a veil.”
The same kind of veil worn by the woman in Elena’s coat.
Alessandro lifted Emma into his arms.
Rosa moved beside them.
“Do not open the gate until we know who she is,” Alessandro said.
“There’s something else,” Tomas replied.
The security screen activated.
A grainy image from the gate camera appeared on the ballroom wall.
A tall woman stood beneath a black umbrella.
Beside her was a small child in a hooded coat.
The girl seemed to be the same height as Emma.
The woman held up a hospital bracelet toward the camera.
Even through the rain, Alessandro could read the faded words.
Baby B Moretti.
Emma reached toward the screen.
The child at the gate lifted her head.
For one brief moment, the wind pushed back her hood.
She had dark hair.
Gray eyes.
And Elena’s face.
Alessandro moved toward the ballroom doors.
Then Tomas shouted through the radio.
“Sir, wait.”
The camera view widened.
A second vehicle was parked beyond the woman.
Its headlights turned on.
Several figures stepped out.
The veiled woman pulled the child behind her.
A message appeared on Alessandro’s phone from Elena’s disconnected number.
Do not open the gate.
The woman outside began pounding on the iron bars.
“Alessandro!” she screamed. “They found us!”
The child beside her pressed both hands against the gate.
Emma whispered one word.
“Sister.”
Alessandro reached for the security controls.
Before he could choose whether to open the gates or seal the estate, every light in the mansion went dark.

And from inside the hidden passage behind the family portrait, a woman’s voice said:
“You were looking in the wrong direction.”
