Chapter 7 - The Clause No One Was Meant to Read

Alessandro watched the damaged recording repeatedly.
Each time, the image ended at the same moment.
A nurse carried a second child out of Elena’s hospital room while Celia stood beside the bed.
Celia claimed she had no memory of the event.
“You were standing beside her,” Alessandro said.
“I visited Elena after the birth. She had suffered complications and was heavily medicated.”
“There were two children.”
“There may have been a medical emergency.”
“Did my wife give birth to twins?”
Celia looked toward Vittorio.
That glance was enough.
Alessandro saw the secret passing silently between them.
“Answer me.”
Vittorio stepped forward.
“There was a second baby.”
Rosa closed her eyes.
Alessandro felt the room shift beneath him.
“What happened?”
“The child did not survive.”
“Why was I never told?”
“You were told Elena experienced a late complication involving a second fetus.”
“That is not the same as holding a living child.”
“The baby lived only minutes.”
“The recording shows a nurse carrying her out of the room.”
“For emergency treatment.”
“Where is the death certificate?”
Vittorio hesitated.
Celia answered.
“The hospital handled it.”
“My family owns part of that hospital.”
“That does not mean we control individual records.”
“Someone reopened Elena’s medical identity three months ago. Someone erased your files tonight. Someone built a second crib in my house.”
Alessandro moved closer.
“Where is the certificate?”
Celia finally admitted the truth.
“I never saw one.”
The second child had no burial record.
No official name.
No preserved medical file.
No place in the Moretti family history.
It was as though she had never existed.
Alessandro turned toward Rosa.
“How much did Elena know?”
“She suspected the baby survived.”
“When?”
“Six months before she died.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“She was gathering proof.”
“She should have trusted me.”
“She did trust you. She didn’t trust the people around you.”
Rosa handed him an old envelope she had hidden inside her uniform.
Elena’s name appeared across the front.
Inside was a copy of the Moretti trust agreement with several passages marked in red.
One clause governed succession when an undisclosed biological child appeared after the death of a parent.
Until the child’s identity could be confirmed, the family trustee would receive temporary control of the estate.
Vittorio had written the clause.
Another passage concerned children removed from the household because of legal or medical necessity.
The trustee could choose where the child lived.
A third passage allowed family counsel to seal records in order to protect the company’s reputation.
Celia had written that section.
Elena had circled both names.
Beneath them, she had written:
One controls the money.
One controls the truth.
But neither of them works alone.
Alessandro looked at Vittorio.
“Did you take my daughter?”
“No.”
“Did you hide her existence?”
“I followed medical advice.”
“Whose?”
Vittorio did not answer.
Alessandro turned to Celia.
She was no longer beside the door.
A guard ran into the corridor.
Celia had disappeared through the hidden passage.
Tomas ordered every exit sealed.
But one security camera showed a dark car leaving through the service gate moments before the alarm.
The gate had been opened remotely.
The authorization came from Alessandro’s private office.

Only one person besides Alessandro possessed that access.
His late wife.
