Chapter 11 - The Confession in the Rabbit

The recording inside the rabbit contained eleven hours of ordinary nursery sounds.

Emma singing.

Rosa reading bedtime stories.

Rain striking the windows.

Vanessa complaining on the phone.

Then, at 1:07 in the morning three weeks earlier, a woman entered Emma’s bedroom.

Her voice had been digitally altered.

“You are Elena’s little girl,” she said.

Emma answered sleepily.

“Mommy is in the stars.”

“Your mommy left you a game.”

“What game?”

“You must watch Vanessa. When she wears the silver dress, look at her tummy.”

“Why?”

“Because the pillow means it is time to find your sister.”

The woman had deliberately used Emma to expose Vanessa.

She knew about the hidden nursery.

She knew about Elena’s investigation.

She also knew Vanessa’s exact plan.

After the woman left, the recording continued.

Twenty minutes later, Vanessa entered the room.

She stood beside Emma’s bed and called someone.

“The child saw me leave the storage room,” she whispered.

A man responded through the phone.

“Then remove anything she can use.”

“What about the maid?”

“The accounts are ready. By tomorrow, everyone will believe Rosa created the scheme.”

“And Alessandro?”

“He will sign the recognition papers once you threaten to leave.”

“What if he asks for a medical examination?”

“He won’t. His pride will protect us.”

The man’s voice belonged to Vittorio.

He stopped denying his involvement.

Vanessa admitted that he had paid her $1.8 million through a property company. She was promised another $5 million after Alessandro signed the paternity declaration.

Vittorio’s plan had been simple.

The false pregnancy would activate the succession review.

Alessandro would fly to Milan.

A manufactured mechanical failure would force his private plane to make an emergency landing. No one was supposed to die, Vittorio insisted. Alessandro would be delayed and publicly portrayed as unstable after the incident.

During the confusion, Vittorio would assume temporary control of the Moretti companies.

Celia would file the guardianship petition.

Vanessa would support a claim that Alessandro’s grief had made him dangerous.

Emma would be removed.

Once the estate was frozen, they would force Alessandro to surrender executive control in exchange for bringing his daughter home.

It was a cruel plan.

But it was not the oldest one.

Vittorio still claimed he had not arranged the removal of the second baby.

“Three years ago, Celia told me the infant died,” he said. “She asked me to approve a confidential hospital payment to prevent the press from learning Elena had lost a child.”

“You transferred $250,000 to the nurse,” Alessandro said.

“I believed I was purchasing silence.”

“You didn’t ask what kind of silence cost a quarter of a million dollars?”

Vittorio looked ashamed.

“No.”

“You chose not to ask.”

“Yes.”

“And when Elena discovered the transfer?”

“I told her the child had died.”

“Did you know that was true?”

“No.”

Alessandro turned away from him.

Vittorio had not stolen the baby with his own hands. He had simply made it possible, then protected himself by refusing to learn the truth.

For Alessandro, there was little difference.

Police entered the mansion just after sunrise.

Vanessa was arrested on charges related to fraud, conspiracy, identity misuse, and falsified medical records.

Vittorio was taken into custody for financial crimes, obstruction, and conspiracy.

Before leaving, Vanessa asked to speak privately with Alessandro.

Tomas remained in the room.

Vanessa no longer attempted to appear innocent.

“I never wanted to hurt Emma.”

“You agreed to have her removed from her home.”

“I thought she would stay at a private school until the negotiations ended.”

“She is three years old.”

“I know.”

“No. You know her age. You do not know what it means.”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“There is something else.”

Alessandro waited.

“The woman who called me said the fake pregnancy would force everyone to open Elena’s files.”

“Why?”

“Because someone in this house had stopped searching for the real child.”

“Who?”

“You.”

The accusation struck harder than he expected.

Vanessa continued.

“She said you accepted the official story because it was easier than questioning your family.”

Alessandro could not deny it.

“What did she promise you?”

“Money. Marriage. Protection.”

“And what did she want?”

Vanessa looked toward the hidden nursery.

“She wanted the doors opened.”

“Which doors?”

“All of them.”

A police officer guided Vanessa toward the corridor.

Before she left, she turned back.

“She also said something about Celia.”

“What?”

“She said Celia did not steal your daughter.”

Alessandro waited.

Vanessa’s next words emptied the room of air.

“She saved her from the person who did.”
