Chapter 8 - Rachel Stops Performing)

Rachel caught Ethan's wrist.

He looked genuinely surprised.

For weeks his power had depended on Rachel reacting predictably.

Fear.

Silence.

Negotiation.

Now she did none of those things.

She twisted free and drove her elbow into his chest.

Ethan stumbled backward into the chair.

Vanessa rushed at her.

Rachel knocked the palette away.

Vanessa reached for her arm.

Rachel shoved her backward onto the stool.

Makeup brushes scattered.

The fake neck brace fell from the vanity.

Rachel picked it up.

The retail tag swung beneath it.

She hurled the brace onto the donation table.

"Use your own damn face for your scam."

Nobody moved.

Michael stared at his camera.

Rachel heard guests talking outside.

Ethan stood.

His face was red with humiliation.

Not pain.

Humiliation.

He had lost control in front of a witness.

"You've lost your mind."

Rachel laughed.

"There it is."

"What?"

"The sentence you've been rehearsing."

Ethan glanced toward Michael.

"She's been emotionally unstable."

Michael said nothing.

Rachel looked at him.

He was studying his camera screen.

Michael enlarged a photograph.

His brow furrowed.

Rachel moved toward him.

Ethan noticed.

"What are you looking at?"

Michael ignored him.

Another photograph.

Then another.

Rachel saw the retail tag.

Relief rushed through her.

Proof.

Visible proof.

But Michael didn't stop there.

He enlarged the mirror.

Rachel's relief vanished.

The mirror showed Ethan behind her.

The blue folder was open.

Her handbag sat beside him.

Vanessa held Rachel's wallet.

Michael moved to the next frame.

Donation envelopes appeared in Ethan's hand.

Next frame.

They disappeared inside Rachel's bag.

Next frame.

A medical invoice.

Next.

The forged authorization.

Rachel stared.

Ethan understood at the same time.

He lunged.

Michael pulled the camera back.

The door opened wider.

Hannah stood there.

Behind her were guests.

"What happened?" Hannah asked.

Ethan immediately changed his voice.

"Rachel is having an episode."

Hannah's expression hardened.

"An episode?"

"She attacked Vanessa."

Rachel pointed toward Michael's camera.

"Look at the photographs."

Ethan moved toward the door.

"No one needs to see anything."

That sentence did more damage than any accusation could have.

Guests exchanged looks.

Aunt Caroline stepped forward.

"Why not?"

Ethan froze.

Michael quietly removed the memory card.

Rachel watched his hands.

Ethan saw them too.

"Don't."

Michael looked at him.

"What?"

"That card contains private family material."

Michael slipped it between two fingers.

"Photographs I took."

"I paid you."

Hannah spoke.

"I paid him."

Ethan looked toward her.

Hannah smiled coldly.

"Surprise."

Michael placed the memory card into Rachel's palm.

"Those price tags aren't the worst thing I caught."

The room seemed to contract.

Rachel looked at the camera display.

Michael enlarged the reflection.

There it was.

The entire planting operation.

Then another frame caught the folder label.

IF EXPOSED.

Rachel heard Hannah inhale sharply.

Vanessa stood.

Her face had gone colorless.

"It's not what it looks like."

Rachel turned toward her.

Vanessa immediately realized the stupidity of the sentence.

Ethan moved toward Rachel.

"Give me the card."

"No."

"Rachel."

"No."

He reached.

Michael stepped between them.

"You should probably stop."

Ethan's voice dropped.

"Move."

"No."

More guests entered the doorway.

Someone began recording.

Rachel recognized Mrs. Callahan from across the street.

She had donated two thousand dollars.

Tears filled the older woman's eyes.

"Rachel?"

Rachel looked at her.

For the first time she understood that truth would hurt people.

People who trusted her.

People who believed the story.

People who had sacrificed money.

Rachel could still protect herself by minimizing everything.

She could blame Ethan privately.

She could pretend she knew almost nothing.

Or she could tell the complete truth.

Including the part that made her ashamed.

Rachel straightened.

"The fundraiser is fraudulent."

The words were quiet.

They traveled through the room anyway.

Someone gasped.

Rachel continued.

"I approved the first post. It exaggerated a dehydration visit. I should never have agreed to it."

Ethan stared at her.

She met his eyes.

"But I did not approve fake treatment posts, fake invoices, medical props, forged signatures or whatever he just planted in my bag."

Ethan laughed.

"Listen to her."

Rachel reached into the bag.

She removed the envelopes.

Then the invoices.

She placed everything on the vanity.

"I didn't put these here."

Ethan turned toward the guests.

"She has been running this entire thing."

Hannah stepped forward.

"Then why did Michael photograph you putting them into her purse?"

Silence.

Vanessa whispered, "Ethan."

He looked at his sister.

It was the first crack between them.

Rachel saw it immediately.

So did Michael.

Ethan's plan required unity.

Now panic had entered the room.

And panic made selfish people dangerous to each other.

Rachel held up the memory card.

"This gets copied before anyone leaves."

Ethan laughed again.

"You think one memory card saves you?"

Rachel stared at him.

May you like

Then Michael said something that made Ethan stop smiling.

"It already has."
