Chapter 6 - The Folder Marked If Exposed)

The night before the baby shower, Ethan did not sleep.

Rachel knew because she heard him moving through the house until nearly four in the morning.

Cabinet doors.

Printer sounds.

Footsteps.

The office door closing.

At 4:20 he came to bed.

Rachel kept her breathing slow.

Ethan placed his phone on the nightstand.

He lay beside her.

Within minutes his breathing changed.

Rachel waited twenty more.

Then she quietly left the room.

She no longer tried to unlock his phone.

Too risky.

Instead she went downstairs.

The office door was locked.

Rachel stood in the hallway thinking.

She had lived in that house for five years.

She knew every repair.

Every loose hinge.

Every unfinished project Ethan promised to fix.

The office had a second door connecting to the mudroom.

Two years earlier its latch had broken.

Ethan had screwed it shut from inside.

Rachel entered the mudroom.

She found a screwdriver.

It took six minutes to remove the old screws.

The door opened.

Rachel slipped into the office.

The desk looked ordinary.

Laptop.

Printer.

Pens.

Folders.

But an unfamiliar black storage box sat beneath the desk.

Locked.

Rachel searched drawers.

Nothing.

Then she remembered Vanessa.

During a Christmas dinner, Vanessa had mocked Ethan for using the same four digit code on everything.

Their father's birth year.

1962.

Rachel entered it.

The box opened.

Inside were copies of fundraiser records.

Fake medical invoices.

Printed photographs.

Rachel's bank statements.

A copy of her driver's license.

A sheet containing samples of her signature.

Rachel's hands began shaking.

Then she saw a blue folder.

The label read:

IF EXPOSED.

Rachel opened it.

Inside was a complete version of the future Ethan had planned for her.

A typed timeline claimed Rachel had created the fundraiser.

Another document said Ethan had become suspicious but trusted his pregnant wife.

There were printed drafts of text messages Rachel had never sent.

One said:

We need better photos or donations stop.

Another:

Put the hospital band where people can see it.

Another:

Move everything to the other account.

Rachel covered her mouth.

They were fabricating conversations.

A statement written in Ethan's name read:

I believed my wife was receiving legitimate treatment. I did not learn that the medical documents were false until after the fundraiser.

Rachel turned another page.

Vanessa's planned statement said almost the same thing.

Both of them would claim Rachel had manipulated them.

Then she found something worse.

A signed authorization transferring the fundraiser proceeds into the secondary bank account.

Rachel's signature appeared at the bottom.

Fake.

Beneath the authorization was a handwritten list.

Donation envelopes.

Invoices.

Medical props.

Rachel purse.

Rachel suddenly understood the text message.

If exposure came, Ethan intended to plant physical evidence in her belongings.

She photographed every page.

Not with her own phone.

Rachel had purchased a cheap prepaid phone two days earlier while Ethan believed she was at a prenatal appointment.

She kept it hidden inside a box of breast pump supplies.

Rachel took thirty seven photographs.

Then she heard a sound upstairs.

She closed the folder.

Locked the box.

Exited through the mudroom.

Replaced one screw in the door.

She reached the nursery before Ethan came downstairs.

"Rachel?"

She turned.

He stood in the hallway.

"What are you doing up?"

"The baby wouldn't stop kicking."

He smiled.

"She's stubborn like her mother."

Rachel smiled back.

She had never hated a sentence more.

At nine the next morning Hannah arrived with flowers.

Rachel hugged her longer than usual.

Hannah whispered, "Are you safe?"

Rachel wanted to say no.

Instead she slipped a small folded note into Hannah's palm.

Bathroom. Ten minutes.

Hannah nodded without looking down.

Ten minutes later they met upstairs.

Rachel locked the bathroom door.

"I need you to listen."

Hannah's face changed.

"What happened?"

Rachel told her everything.

The fundraiser.

The forged loan.

The fake medical posts.

The passwords.

The messages.

The folder.

Hannah's eyes filled with anger.

"Rachel, we're leaving."

"Not yet."

"What?"

"If I leave now, Ethan destroys everything."

"You have photographs."

"Photographs of documents he can say I created."

"Then police."

"And when they ask why sixty thousand dollars was deposited into an account with my name on it?"

Hannah went silent.

Rachel continued.

"I approved the first post."

"You didn't approve this."

"But that's what he will say."

Hannah gripped Rachel's hands.

"Then what do we do?"

Rachel looked toward the bathroom door.

"Michael."

"The photographer?"

"I asked him to keep his originals."

"Why?"

"Because Ethan doesn't control his camera."

Hannah stared at her.

Rachel explained the plan.

If Michael photographed anything suspicious, Rachel wanted the files preserved immediately.

Not edited.

Not transferred through Ethan's devices.

Original files with timestamps.

Hannah nodded.

"I'll talk to him."

"No. Ethan watches you."

"Then how?"

Rachel looked at the shower schedule.

Michael would arrive at noon.

Guests at three.

Rachel had three hours.

She believed that would be enough.

She was wrong.

At eleven thirty Vanessa entered the bedroom holding electric hair clippers.

Ethan followed carrying the blue folder.

Rachel's heart stopped.

He tossed the folder onto the bed.

Not the original.

A duplicate.

"What is that?" Rachel asked.

Ethan watched her carefully.

"Insurance paperwork."

Rachel pretended not to recognize it.

Vanessa plugged in the clippers.

Rachel stared at them.

"Why do you have those?"

May you like

Vanessa smiled.

"Because today we're finally going to make people believe you."
