Chapter 5 - Michael Reed Notices the Wrong Details)

Michael Reed accepted the baby shower job because Hannah Brooks called him.

He normally photographed weddings, family portraits and corporate events.

He had known Hannah for six years.

"Please say yes," she told him.

"I already have a commercial shoot that morning."

"The shower starts at three."

Michael checked his calendar.

"Whose shower?"

"Rachel Morgan."

He knew the name.

Most people in their community did.

"The pregnant woman who's sick?"

There was a pause.

"That's the strange part."

Michael sat straighter.

"What?"

Hannah lowered her voice.

"I've known Rachel since college. She barely talks about whatever is supposedly wrong."

"Some people are private."

"Rachel isn't."

Michael waited.

Hannah continued.

"Her husband and sister in law post everything. Rachel posts almost nothing."

"You think they're lying?"

"I think Rachel is scared."

That interested Michael.

Not as a photographer.

As a person.

"What do you want me to do?"

"Take the job. Pay attention."

"I'm not a detective."

"I know."

"Hannah."

"Just be there."

Michael finally agreed.

Three days before the party, Vanessa called him with a list of photographs she wanted.

Rachel looking fragile near nursery window.

Rachel resting beside shower gifts.

Rachel with medical accessories visible but subtle.

Michael stopped reading.

"Medical accessories?"

Vanessa laughed.

"Her treatment stuff."

"What treatment?"

Silence.

Then Vanessa said, "It's complicated."

Michael's suspicion grew.

The morning of the baby shower he arrived early.

Rachel opened the door.

Michael immediately noticed three things.

She looked exhausted.

A bruise colored one cheek.

And her eyes went straight toward the driveway before she invited him inside.

"Are you Michael?"

"Yes."

"Hannah's friend."

"That's me."

Rachel gave him a faint smile.

Then she whispered something so quietly he almost missed it.

"Keep your originals."

Michael frowned.

"What?"

Footsteps approached.

Rachel's expression changed instantly.

Ethan entered.

"Michael. Good to meet you."

Rachel stepped away.

Michael shook Ethan's hand.

"Likewise."

Ethan smiled warmly.

Too warmly.

"We want today to feel hopeful. Rachel's been through hell."

Rachel looked toward the floor.

Michael noticed.

Photographers learned to read people.

A groom uncomfortable near his father.

A child afraid of a particular relative.

A bride forcing a smile.

Most people noticed faces.

Michael noticed what happened between expressions.

The half second when someone forgot to perform.

Rachel's half seconds were terrified.

Vanessa entered carrying several shopping bags.

"Perfect timing."

She placed them near the vanity.

One bag tipped sideways.

Michael saw a foam neck brace inside.

A white retail sticker remained attached.

Vanessa quickly pushed the bag upright.

Michael said nothing.

During the next hour he photographed decorations.

Cake.

Flowers.

Gifts.

Rachel greeting early guests.

Ethan repeatedly positioned himself beside her whenever anyone asked about her health.

"We're taking it day by day."

"She's incredibly strong."

"The doctors are hopeful."

Rachel never confirmed any of it.

She smiled.

She nodded.

She changed the subject.

At one point an older guest hugged her.

"I sent another thousand yesterday."

Rachel's smile vanished.

"You did?"

"Anything for you."

Rachel looked toward Ethan.

His eyes warned her.

Michael photographed that moment.

Later he reviewed the image.

Anyone else would see a pregnant woman looking emotional.

Michael saw Ethan's hand gripping the back of Rachel's chair.

He saw tension in Rachel's jaw.

He saw Vanessa watching them.

Then Vanessa approached.

"We need the private photos now."

"What private photos?"

"Before guests arrive."

Rachel looked alarmed.

Vanessa took Michael toward the dressing room.

The vanity contained more medical props.

Bandages.

Collars.

Medication containers without labels.

Makeup.

Donation envelopes.

Michael stared at the arrangement.

"This is for the photographs?"

"It's her reality."

Rachel entered behind them.

"No."

Vanessa turned.

"Rachel."

"No more."

Ethan appeared in the doorway holding electric hair clippers.

Michael's stomach tightened.

Rachel stared at the clippers.

"What is that?"

Ethan tried to smile.

"The post we discussed."

"We never discussed shaving my head."

Vanessa stepped forward.

"Not your whole head."

Rachel backed away.

"No."

Ethan shut the door.

Michael lifted his camera.

Not to photograph.

Instinct.

Ethan glanced at him.

"You can wait outside."

Michael didn't move.

Rachel looked directly into his lens.

And Michael understood the whisper from earlier.

Keep your originals.

She was asking him to preserve evidence.

He lowered the camera only slightly.

"I need to test the room exposure."

Ethan looked irritated.

Vanessa grabbed Rachel's arm.

"Let's just get it done."

Rachel pulled away.

The first burst of photographs began almost accidentally.

Michael focused on Rachel.

May you like

But the mirror behind her captured the rest of the room.

And within seven minutes, that mirror would record the first piece of a plan Rachel had not yet discovered.
