Chapter 7 - The Price of Refusing)

Rachel said no.

Ethan acted as if she had spoken a foreign language.

"No?"

"I am not shaving my hair."

"It's one section."

"No."

"It grows back."

"No."

Vanessa leaned against the dresser.

"Do you know how much money is coming today?"

"I don't care."

"At least twenty thousand if the room feels emotional."

Rachel looked at her.

"You talk about my friends like customers."

"They are donors."

"They think I'm sick."

Vanessa shrugged.

"Then look sick."

Rachel turned toward Ethan.

"If either of you touches my hair, I walk into that party and tell everyone."

Ethan's face changed.

The mask fell completely.

"Tell them what?"

"The truth."

"What truth?"

"All of it."

He smiled slowly.

"Go ahead."

Rachel hadn't expected that.

Ethan walked toward the closet and retrieved her handbag.

He opened it.

Inside were donation envelopes.

Rachel stopped breathing.

He removed one.

Her name was written across the front.

Then another.

Then a fake medical invoice.

"Recognize these?"

"You put them there."

"Did I?"

Rachel looked toward Vanessa.

Vanessa folded her arms.

Ethan continued.

"Imagine the conversation. Rachel Morgan admits the fundraiser was fake. Investigators search her belongings. They discover donation money, medical invoices and an account in her name."

Rachel felt nauseated.

"I photographed your folder."

Ethan's smile vanished for the smallest second.

Then returned.

"What folder?"

"You know."

"You mean a folder you created?"

Rachel realized how deeply he had prepared.

He was no longer improvising.

Ethan sat on the edge of the bed.

"You need to understand something. Nobody wants to believe a husband exploited his pregnant wife. That's ugly."

Rachel stared at him.

"But a desperate woman who lied because she needed money?"

He tilted his head.

"People understand that story."

"You are disgusting."

"Maybe."

He gestured toward the handbag.

"But I'm organized."

Vanessa handed him the clippers.

Rachel backed toward the door.

Ethan's voice softened.

"Twenty minutes of photographs. That's all."

"No."

"Then I send Lakefront every document connecting you to the guarantee."

"You forged it."

"Prove it."

"I will."

"And the fundraiser?"

Rachel stopped.

Ethan rose.

"If this collapses tonight, the house goes too."

"I don't care about the house."

"What about health insurance?"

Rachel's hand moved instinctively toward her belly.

Ethan saw it.

"What about prenatal care? Delivery? The baby?"

Rachel knew enough to realize he was exaggerating.

But fear did not require accuracy.

He had found the vulnerable place.

"You would risk your daughter over money?"

"Don't make me the villain because you're suddenly developing a conscience."

Rachel stared at him.

Suddenly developing.

As if morality were a weakness.

As if refusing the next lie erased none of the previous pressure.

A knock sounded downstairs.

Michael had arrived.

Rachel looked toward the hall.

Ethan caught her arm.

"Smile."

She pulled away.

"Don't touch me."

For the next forty minutes, Rachel obeyed just enough to keep Ethan from shutting Michael out.

She posed beside flowers.

She stood near the cake.

She accepted hugs.

But every time she faced Michael's camera, she looked at him directly.

Not smiling.

Not pretending.

Michael noticed.

Then Vanessa announced they needed "private preparation photographs."

The four of them entered the dressing room.

Rachel stayed near the open doorway.

Ethan closed it halfway.

Michael positioned himself near the wall.

Vanessa arranged the medical props.

Rachel saw the dangling retail tags.

A strange thought came to her.

They were sloppy because they believed power mattered more than evidence.

They had controlled Rachel for weeks.

Therefore they believed they controlled reality.

Ethan picked up the clippers.

Rachel stepped back.

"No."

He grabbed her shoulder.

Michael's camera rose.

The motor inside began capturing frames.

Ethan switched on the clippers.

The buzzing filled the room.

Rachel twisted away.

A chunk of hair fell.

For a second she felt pure shock.

Vanessa laughed.

"Stop moving."

Rachel looked at herself in the mirror.

The uneven shaved patch transformed something inside her.

Until that moment, Ethan's cruelty had been documents, passwords, threats and manipulation.

Now it was visible.

He had placed his lie on her body.

Vanessa grabbed Rachel's chin.

Rachel saw the makeup brush approaching.

And something stronger than fear rose through her.

Michael kept photographing.

Ethan gripped her shoulder.

Vanessa smeared the fake bruise across Rachel's cheek.

"Hold still, bitch. Sick women bring in more donations."

Rachel slapped her hand away.

Ethan slammed the clipper onto the vanity.

"Stop fighting and start looking pathetic."

May you like

Rachel looked at her husband.

Then she stopped trying to survive quietly.
