Chapter 4 - The Signature Rachel Never Wrote)

Rachel barely reached the nursery before Ethan appeared upstairs.
She was standing beside the crib when he entered.
"Everything okay?"
His tone sounded casual.
Rachel forced herself to smile.
"Just tired."
He studied her.
"Why is the printer warm?"
Rachel's pulse jumped.
"I printed a recipe."
"A recipe?"
"For freezer meals."
He watched her for another second.
Then nodded.
Rachel waited until he went downstairs before allowing herself to breathe.
She had hidden the Lakefront notice beneath the mattress in the guest room.
The photographs remained on her phone.
That was a mistake.
Twenty minutes later Ethan called from downstairs.
"Rachel?"
She followed his voice.
He was standing in the kitchen holding her phone.
"I thought you lost this," he said.
She froze.
"I was looking for mine."
Rachel extended her hand.
"Give it back."
He did not.
The screen was open.
Her photographs of the loan documents were gone.
Ethan looked at her calmly.
"You shouldn't go through my business files."
"You forged my signature."
His face did not change.
"You don't understand what you read."
"My name is on a guarantee for almost two hundred thousand dollars."
"It was necessary."
"You forged my signature."
"We're married."
Rachel stared at him.
"That's your defense?"
"We share debt."
"Not debt you create using my identity."
Ethan set the phone on the counter.
"You're getting dramatic."
Rachel laughed in disbelief.
"You committed fraud."
His face hardened.
"Careful."
The word was quiet.
Rachel stepped backward.
"Are you threatening me?"
"I'm reminding you that you're involved too."
"In what?"
"The fundraiser."
Rachel went still.
Ethan leaned against the island.
"Think about it. Your photograph. Your story. Your name. Your bank account."
"My bank account?"
He smiled faintly.
"You didn't read everything, did you?"
Fear rose through Rachel's chest.
"What did you do?"
"The fundraiser has always deposited through an account associated with both of us."
"Which account?"
"The secondary checking account."
"I don't have access to that."
"But your name is on it."
Rachel understood.
Every donation appeared to flow into an account legally connected to her.
Ethan had created a paper trail.
"How long have you been planning this?"
"Planning what?"
"To make me responsible."
His expression shifted into false concern.
"Rachel, nobody is making you responsible."
"Then restore my account access."
"We can discuss that later."
"Now."
"You need to calm down."
"I am calm."
"No, you're not."
Rachel stared at him.
That sentence again.
He was rehearsing it.
She could almost imagine him telling someone else.
Rachel became irrational during pregnancy.
Rachel made strange accusations.
Rachel controlled the fundraiser.
Rachel signed the documents.
Rachel had become unstable.
She walked away without another word.
That evening she did something Ethan did not expect.
She acted normal.
She ate dinner.
She asked about his work.
She discussed nursery curtains.
When Vanessa texted about baby shower flowers, Rachel answered politely.
At 2:15 in the morning, Rachel got out of bed.
Ethan was asleep.
She took his phone from the bedside table.
It required facial recognition.
She already knew that.
So she carried it to the bathroom.
Then she returned.
She gently touched Ethan's shoulder.
He shifted onto his back.
Rachel held the phone near his face.
The device unlocked.
She went back into the bathroom and locked the door.
Her hands shook.
She searched his messages with Vanessa.
There were hundreds.
Most were ordinary.
Then she searched her own name.
Results appeared.
Rachel read.
VANESSA: She keeps asking about refunds.
ETHAN: Keep her focused on shower.
VANESSA: She is going to blow this up.
ETHAN: Not if paperwork is clean.
Rachel scrolled.
VANESSA: How much is in R account?
ETHAN: 64 now. Need 90.
VANESSA: Hospital photos will get us there.
Rachel pressed a hand over her mouth.
Sixty four thousand dollars.
They had raised sixty four thousand dollars.
She kept reading.
VANESSA: What if she tells Hannah?
ETHAN: Then Rachel becomes organizer.
VANESSA: She never logged in.
ETHAN: Doesn't matter. Account is hers.
Another message.
VANESSA: Need signature samples.
ETHAN: Office drawer.
Another.
ETHAN: If anything goes bad, envelopes go in her bag.
Rachel stopped breathing.
She read the sentence again.
Envelopes go in her bag.
Then Vanessa's reply.
And invoices?
Ethan answered.
Same place.
Rachel suddenly heard movement in the bedroom.
She locked the phone.
The bathroom door handle moved.
"Rachel?"
She flushed the toilet.
"One second."
"Why do you have my phone?"
Her entire body went cold.
She opened the door.
Ethan stood there.
Rachel held out the device.
"I thought it was mine."
His eyes remained on her.
For several seconds neither spoke.
Then Ethan took the phone.
"You feeling okay?"
"Fine."
He kissed her forehead.
"Come back to bed."
Rachel followed him.
But she did not sleep.
She now knew exactly what the fundraiser was becoming.
Ethan and Vanessa were preparing evidence against her.
The next morning Rachel retrieved the hidden Lakefront notice.
It was gone.
In its place was a folded sheet of paper.
No message.
No signature.
Only a photocopy of Rachel's driver's license.
Someone had placed it there deliberately.
