Chapter 5 - The Brother in the Basement Photograph

Judge Wren survived surgery, but the hospital placed him under guarded isolation before Elena could question him again.

Dr. Samuel Vale personally signed the order.

That coincidence was enough for Elena to secure a warrant for Vale's office records. It was not enough to stop the hospital from delaying access for forty-eight hours.

Mariana spent those hours at Teresa's house, searching every room Ryan had used during the years he presented himself as the family's protector. He had married Mariana's younger sister, Sofia, eight years earlier. Sofia died in a boating accident after only eleven months of marriage. Ryan remained close to Teresa afterward, managing investments, overseeing repairs, and appearing at every holiday with flowers.

Everyone praised his loyalty.

The perfect son-in-law.

Sofia's death had bound him to the family more tightly than marriage ever could.

In the basement, Mariana discovered a false panel behind the wine racks. The space beyond was narrow and dry. It contained a metal cabinet, a portable cot, and a wall covered with photographs.

Most showed Mariana.

Mariana leaving school at sixteen.

Mariana entering the coastal recovery center at nineteen.

Mariana sleeping on a train.

Mariana arguing with Ryan in a parking garage six months earlier.

Dates and times were written beneath each image.

Elena photographed the wall while Julian searched the cabinet. "This is long-term surveillance," Elena said. "Some of these were taken before Ryan married Sofia."

"Maybe they belonged to his brother."

"Or to whoever has been tracking both of you."

Julian found a locked drawer and forced it open. Inside lay a passport bearing Ryan's photograph under the name Adrian Cole.

The birth date was one year earlier than Ryan's.

A second passport bore the same photograph and the name Gabriel Orison.

"Three identities," Julian said.

Mariana picked up a faded family portrait from the bottom of the drawer. Evelyn Cole stood beside two teenage boys who looked almost identical. One was Ryan. The other had a thin scar through his left eyebrow.

On the back, someone had written: Ryan and Gabriel, before the separation.

A final word had been added later in Teresa's handwriting.

Adrian.

"Three names, two faces," Elena said.

Mariana studied the twins. "Which one married me?"

Footsteps sounded upstairs.

The house was supposed to be secured.

Elena signaled for silence and drew her weapon. Julian switched off the basement light. They waited in darkness as someone moved through the kitchen, slow and careful.

A floorboard creaked near the basement door.

Then Teresa's medical alarm began ringing upstairs.

Mariana ran before Elena could stop her.

She reached the bedroom and found the hospital bed empty.

The window stood open. Curtains billowed in the rain-scented air. The monitor leads had been cut cleanly, and a wheelchair track marked the carpet toward a private elevator at the end of the hall.

The elevator doors were closing.

Mariana forced her fingers between them. The safety mechanism resisted, then reopened.

Inside sat Teresa, terrified but unharmed.

Behind her stood Ryan.

He held no weapon. One hand rested on the wheelchair handle. The other held a small black device with a red light.

"Move away from her," Elena ordered from the hallway.

Ryan looked at Mariana. "The house is wired. Someone activated a device beneath her bed. I moved her before it detonated."

"There was no explosion."

"Because I blocked the signal."

He tossed the device onto the carpet.

Julian examined it. "Frequency jammer."

Elena kept her gun raised. "Why were you inside a secured house?"

"Because the security company belongs to me."

"And the photographs in the basement?"

Ryan's eyes shifted toward Mariana. "Not mine."

"Your passport was in the cabinet."

"Which name?"

"Adrian Cole."

Something in his face hardened.

"Then Gabriel has been here."

Mariana stepped closer. "Judge Wren said your brother married me."

Ryan looked at Teresa, then back at Mariana.

"Judge Wren is alive?"

"Answer me."

Ryan lowered his voice. "You married Adrian."

"The passport says you are Adrian."

"The passport lies."

"Then who are you?"

Before Ryan could answer, the medical monitor on the floor powered on by itself.

A video appeared across its screen.

It showed the basement in real time.

A man stood beneath the wall of photographs.

He looked exactly like Ryan, except for the scar through his left eyebrow.

He smiled at the camera.

Then he lifted Sofia's missing wedding ring between two fingers.

"Hello, wife," he said.

He was looking directly at Mariana.
