Chapter 13 - The Woman With Mariana's Face

The woman on Evelyn's boat was not identical to Mariana, but from a distance the resemblance was convincing. Same dark hair. Same profile. Same posture Mariana had seen in old photographs from the coastal clinic.

Facial reconstruction software later showed surgical alterations around the jaw and eyes.

"Another replacement," Sofia said. "Evelyn called them Mirrors."

The raid recovered files on seventeen women. Each had been selected young, isolated from family, and trained to impersonate someone connected to the Orison trust. Some received cosmetic surgery. Some were taught memories through photographs, recordings, and staged environments. Several had died during treatment.

One file was labeled MARIANA ALVAREZ, SUCCESSION CANDIDATE 4.

Mariana read it in the temporary command center by the lake. The candidate on the boat was named Leah Voss, recruited at fourteen after her mother died. Her training included Mariana's education, relationships, medical history, handwriting, and speech patterns.

The file contained details Mariana had never told anyone.

Her fear of enclosed elevators.

The song Teresa sang when storms woke her.

The exact words Adrian used during their nine-day marriage.

"How could she know those?" Mariana asked.

Sofia looked at Ryan.

Ryan understood the accusation. "I did not give Evelyn your memories."

"You worked for her," Sofia said.

"I pretended to."

"For eight years?"

"To keep Teresa alive and find you."

Sofia laughed without humor. "You found neither truth nor me."

Elena interrupted before the argument deepened. A patrol boat had located Evelyn's abandoned vessel on the western shore. Blood stained the deck. Three sets of footprints led into the forest, but only two returned to the road.

"Someone was left behind," Elena said.

They found Leah Voss beneath an overturned canoe, unconscious from a gunshot wound to the side. At the hospital she survived surgery and asked for Mariana.

Leah looked disturbingly familiar in the recovery bed. When she opened her eyes, she began speaking in Teresa's private nickname for Mariana.

"Mari-bird."

Mariana recoiled. Only Teresa and Sofia used that name.

Leah smiled weakly. "She said you would hate me for knowing it."

"Evelyn?"

"She isn't the one giving orders anymore."

"Who is?"

Leah glanced toward the camera in the corner. Elena covered the lens.

"Dr. Vale controls the Mirrors," Leah whispered. "Evelyn controls the medical network. Adrian controls the evidence. Ryan controls the trust access. They pretend to fight, but the system survives because each protects one piece."

Ryan stood outside the room behind the glass. He could not hear her, but Leah watched him.

"He does not know what he controls," she added. "Sofia's marriage created a transfer clause. When she was declared dead, her trust interest moved to her widower. Ryan has been the legal gatekeeper for eight years."

Mariana remembered the papers on Teresa's bed. "The documents he wanted her to sign."

"They would have opened the final account."

"Did Evelyn order him?"

"No. Adrian did."

Mariana's pulse accelerated. "Adrian contacted Ryan?"

"They have communicated for years through dead drops. Each thinks he is manipulating the other."

Leah's breathing became shallow. "The third daughter is not identified by blood alone. Elena Orison implanted a legal cipher in the trust. The heir must know a phrase she spoke before dying. Evelyn believes Teresa heard it."

"Did she?"

"Teresa told Sofia."

Mariana looked toward her sister, who stood at the end of the corridor.

Sofia had not mentioned any phrase.

Leah gripped Mariana's wrist. "Do not let Sofia open the account. The money is not the inheritance. It funds a list of children placed through Saint Orison. Whoever opens it gains their identities."

The monitor beside Leah flickered.

A message appeared on the screen.

HELLO, MARI-BIRD.

ASK YOUR SISTER WHAT SHE DID FOR EIGHT YEARS.

May you like

Sofia saw it through the glass.

She turned and ran.
