Chapter 11 - The Third Daughter

The video of Sofia lasted eleven seconds.
Julian extracted the background noise and found three useful sounds: a diesel generator, a repeating metal bell, and water moving beneath wooden boards. Black Hollow contained dozens of private cabins, two abandoned camps, and an old hydroelectric station. The bell narrowed the search to a former girls' school on the eastern shore.
The property had belonged to Second Light Foundation until it was transferred to a shell company controlled by the Alvarez family trust.
Teresa had purchased it.
Mariana confronted her mother in the protected hospital unit. Teresa listened without turning from the window.
"You owned the place where Sofia was held," Mariana said. "You took the ledger from Ryan. You made a deal with Evelyn. I need the whole truth."
Teresa's therapy had improved her speech, but every sentence cost her effort. "I bought it to find her."
"Did you?"
"For years."
"Why didn't you tell me she was alive?"
Teresa closed her eyes. "Because they said they would kill both of you."
"Who is the third daughter?"
Her mother began to cry.
Mariana placed the photograph from the convent on the bedside table. "One child was yours. One was Evelyn's. One was unregistered. Who was she?"
Teresa looked at the door to be certain they were alone.
"A young woman came to Saint Orison bleeding," she whispered. "No identification. No prenatal care. She delivered a girl and died before dawn. Evelyn ordered the staff to record the baby as stillborn."
"Why?"
"The infant had a rare blood marker needed for Evelyn's research. She wanted access without guardianship questions."
"And you took her?"
"I tried."
Teresa described a night of confusion, medication, and switched bassinets. Evelyn had given birth by scheduled surgery hours earlier. Teresa delivered Sofia just after midnight. The unidentified woman delivered the third infant before dawn. During a fire alarm, a nurse moved the babies. Bracelets were exchanged. When order returned, no one could prove which child belonged to whom.
"You raised two daughters," Mariana said. "Sofia and me."
Teresa nodded.
"Which one was yours?"
"I never knew. I loved you both."
"Then where was the third child?"
Teresa's gaze moved toward the hallway.
A woman in a pale nursing uniform stood beyond the glass.
She looked close to Mariana's age. Her dark hair was cut at the chin. A birthmark shaped like a comma touched the skin below her right ear.
Mariana had seen that mark before.
On Dr. Vale's assistant, Nurse Claire Rowan, who had cared for Teresa since the stroke.
Claire entered the room carrying medication.
Teresa's monitor accelerated.
"Leave," Teresa whispered.
Claire smiled. "You have taken enough from me."
She locked the door.
Mariana stepped between her and the bed. "Who are you?"
"The child no one registered."
Claire set the medication tray down. Beneath it lay a compact pistol.
"Evelyn found me in foster care when I was eight," she said. "She told me Teresa stole my life, that one of you slept in my bed, wore my clothes, received the name I should have had."
"Evelyn lied to everyone."
"Not about being discarded."
Teresa struggled to sit up. "I searched for you."
"You searched after you became afraid of exposure."
Claire raised the gun toward Mariana. "Sofia learned who I was. She promised to help, then chose Ryan. Everyone chooses someone else."
Mariana understood the video. "You are holding Sofia."
"I was. She escaped before the recording finished uploading."
A fire alarm sounded in the corridor. Claire's eyes flickered toward the door.
Mariana moved.
She struck the gun aside as Teresa pulled the medication cart into Claire's knees. The pistol fired into the ceiling. Security rushed through the door. Claire fought with desperate strength, but two officers forced her to the floor.
As they handcuffed her, she laughed.
"You still think I am the third daughter because I have the birthmark?"
Mariana froze.
Claire turned her face against the tile.
The comma-shaped mark smeared beneath her cheek.
Makeup.
"Evelyn taught us all to become the missing child," Claire said. "There are more of us than you know."
Inside her pocket, investigators found a map of Black Hollow and a keycard bearing Sofia's photograph.
The name beneath it read Dr. Sofia Orison.
The road to Black Hollow passed the ruined edge of Saint Orison's original maternity annex. Mariana asked Elena to stop for five minutes. Inside the fenced grounds, weeds pushed through cracked pavement and rusted signs still pointed toward DELIVERY, RECORDS, and FAMILY SERVICES.
Near a boarded side entrance, they found three names carved into the brick at child height: MARI, SOF, and E. The first two were weathered. The third looked newly cut.
Elena touched the letter with one gloved finger. "Someone expected us to come this way."
Beneath the carving lay a glass marble containing a rolled strip of film. Julian held it to the light. The tiny image showed Teresa in the delivery ward, Evelyn beside her, and a third woman in a blue coat reflected in the observation window.
Elena stepped back.
May you like
"That coat," she said. "I remember it."
No one spoke during the rest of the drive. The lake appeared after sunset, dark and perfectly still, as though the water had been waiting twenty-three years for all of them to return. Along the shoreline, abandoned lamps blinked on one after another without any visible hand touching the switches. Each light marked a path toward the old school, and each path ended at a locked door. Mariana understood that Black Hollow was not merely a hiding place. It was a stage prepared for their arrival, with every survivor assigned a role by someone who already knew which secrets each of them would carry inside.
