Chapter 12 - Black Hollow

Black Hollow looked peaceful from the road.
Pine trees surrounded the lake. Mist floated over dark water. The abandoned girls' school stood on the eastern shore with ivy covering its stone walls and a brass bell hanging above the boathouse.
Elena coordinated the operation with state police and federal agents. Ryan was released into temporary protective cooperation after providing access codes to the property. He traveled in a separate vehicle and wore a tracking device.
"No heroics," Elena told him. "You enter only when I say."
"Sofia may respond to my voice."
"Or she may run because of it."
Mariana entered the main building with the first team. Classrooms had been converted into treatment rooms. Cabinets held drugs labeled under false research protocols. One wall displayed childhood photographs of women from the convent, each paired with a different family.
The program had not merely switched babies.
It had trained replacements.
In the basement, they found a studio built to resemble Teresa's bedroom. The same wallpaper, bedframe, silver clock, and medical equipment had been duplicated precisely.
A camera recorded from the dresser.
Mariana felt the blood leave her face.
"The midnight attack," she said. "They recreated it."
Julian examined the equipment. "This system can inject prerecorded footage into a live feed. Some of what you watched may have come from here."
Ryan entered behind them despite Elena's order. "No. The bruises were real. I was in the bedroom."
"But the deleted archive could have been altered," Julian said. "Someone may have wanted the police to arrive at an exact moment."
Mariana looked at Ryan. "Were you being controlled?"
"I chose to threaten Teresa. No one controlled that."
His answer carried no self-pity, which made it harder to dismiss.
A sound came from the floor above.
Three slow knocks.
Ryan looked toward the ceiling. "Sofia and I used that signal on the boat."
They followed the knocks to the old music hall. The grand piano had been pushed aside, revealing a trapdoor. Beneath it, a narrow stairway descended to the waterline.
Sofia waited in the tunnel.
For several seconds, no one moved.
She looked older than the woman in Mariana's memories, but her eyes were the same. A thin scar crossed her chin. She held a flare gun in both hands.
Ryan whispered her name.
Sofia aimed at his chest.
"Stay back."
"I thought you were dead."
"That made you easier to use."
"Sofia, I tried to save you."
"And then you spent eight years serving the people who took me."
Ryan lowered his hands. "I searched every place I knew."
"You never searched the places your mother taught you not to see."
Mariana stepped forward. "We can argue later. We need to leave."
Sofia's face softened when she saw her sister, but fear remained. "Evelyn is not here. She left before the raid."
"Who was holding you?"
"Claire was one of them. There are women trained to believe they are the unregistered infant. Evelyn gives each one pieces of the story and lets them compete for the identity."
"Why?"
"Because the real third daughter inherited something Evelyn could not access."
Sofia removed a chain from beneath her shirt. A small brass capsule hung from it.
"The unidentified mother was not poor," she said. "She was Elena Orison, heir to the Orison pharmaceutical estate. She disappeared after refusing to approve illegal neonatal trials. Her daughter inherited controlling shares through a sealed trust. Evelyn needed the child or a convincing replacement."
Mariana looked at the capsule. "Does that prove who she is?"
"It contains half a genetic key. The other half is in the ledger."
A gunshot echoed from the school.
Then another.
Elena shouted over the radio that officers were under attack from the woods.
Sofia turned toward the lake tunnel. "There is a boat beyond the gate."
Ryan reached for her hand. She pulled away.
"Not yet," she said.
They escaped through the boathouse as flames spread across the school's roof. Someone had ignited chemicals in the laboratory wing. Across the lake, a motorboat accelerated into the mist.
An elderly woman stood at the stern.
Even at a distance, Ryan recognized her.
"Mother."
Evelyn lifted one hand in farewell.
May you like
Beside her stood Dr. Vale.
And between them sat a woman wearing Mariana's face.
