Chapter 14 - Sofia's Eight Missing Years

Sofia did not leave the hospital. Elena found her in the chapel, seated beneath a wooden cross with the brass capsule clenched in her hand.

Mariana entered alone.

"You could have told me," she said.

Sofia stared at the candles. "You would have tried to rescue me."

"That is what sisters do."

"And they would have taken you too."

"What did you do for eight years?"

Sofia's answer came slowly. After the marina, Adrian took her from Vale's van and promised freedom in exchange for the ledger. She refused. He hid her for three weeks, then Evelyn's people recaptured her. At Black Hollow, she learned medicine from stolen textbooks and assisted with patients because cooperation earned movement outside her room.

Over time, she became useful.

She treated women harmed by the Mirror program. She falsified deaths so some could escape. She passed information to Adrian. She also gave Evelyn enough cooperation to remain alive.

"I became Dr. Sofia Orison because the name opened doors," she said. "Some nights I helped people. Some nights I signed forms that hurt them. There is no version of those years that makes me innocent."

"Did you contact Ryan?"

"Once. Evelyn intercepted it. She played me a recording of Ryan agreeing to pressure Mother for the trust key. I believed he had chosen the money."

Ryan appeared in the chapel doorway. "I agreed because Adrian told me the account contained the patient list."

Sofia stood. "You threatened my mother."

"Our mother," he said, then corrected himself. "Teresa. I threatened Teresa. I will answer for it."

"You nearly killed her."

"I did not intend to."

"Intent is the favorite shelter of cruel men."

Ryan accepted the words without defense.

Mariana placed Leah's warning between them. "The final account identifies children placed through Saint Orison. Vale, Evelyn, and Adrian all want it. Teresa knows the phrase. Sofia has half the genetic key. Ryan has the legal authority created by Sofia's declared death."

"Then all of us are required," Ryan said.

Sofia looked at him coldly. "Which is why my return destroys your authority."

"Unless the law refuses to recognize you."

Elena entered with new information. The diagnostics company had recovered the archived blood-card chain of custody. The original report would identify the biological relationships among Teresa, Evelyn, Mariana, and Sofia.

But someone had accessed the archive first.

The result was encrypted and sent to a private server registered to Adrian Cole.

"He has the identity of Evelyn's daughter," Elena said.

Mariana's phone rang from an unknown number.

Adrian spoke when she answered. "Come to the Alvarez house at midnight. Bring Sofia, Ryan, and the brass capsule. Teresa is already here."

"She is under guard."

"Check her room."

Elena called the hospital unit. The guard answered from the floor, injured but alive. Teresa had been taken through a service elevator ten minutes earlier.

"Why the house?" Mariana asked.

"Because that is where your mother hid the ledger," Adrian replied. "Not in a safe. Not in a box. Inside the walls of the room where Ryan threatened her."

"Why should we trust you?"

"You should not. But Evelyn and Vale are coming too, and tonight one of us will finally open the account."

The call ended.

Elena ordered tactical teams around the estate, but a storm disrupted communications as midnight approached. Lightning moved above the city. The house lost power minutes before Mariana arrived.

Inside the bedroom, candles burned around Teresa's hospital bed.

Teresa sat upright, pale but conscious.

Adrian stood behind her.

Evelyn waited near the French windows, elegant in a black coat despite her age.

Dr. Vale held a pistol beside the door.

Ryan and Sofia entered from opposite sides of the room.

For the first time, every surviving person connected to the night at Saint Orison stood together.

Adrian placed the steel pliers on the leather folder.

"Let us finish what began after midnight," he said.
