Chapter 9 - The Door That Locked from Outside

Daniel reached the circular door before it sealed.
He wedged a metal bar into the narrowing gap, but the mechanism continued pressing forward.
“Move back.”
Everyone retreated.
The bar bent.
The door closed with a deafening impact.
Emergency lamps flickered on.
Daniel checked his radio.
No signal.
Nathan tried his phone.
Nothing.
Claire looked toward the surveillance camera mounted in the corner.
A red light glowed above the lens.
Someone was watching.
Grant saw it too.
“There is another exit.”
“How do you know?” Sebastian asked.
“I found ventilation plans in the control room.”
“You said you were held captive.”
“I was. I also spent hours trying to escape.”
Daniel searched the walls.
“Show me.”
Grant led him through the chamber to a narrow maintenance shaft hidden behind a removable panel. It was barely large enough for one person at a time.
Nathan looked toward Claire.
“You cannot crawl through that with your injuries.”
“I can.”
Sebastian stepped toward the camera.
“Whoever you are, open the door.”
A speaker crackled.
Vanessa’s voice filled the chamber.
“Sebastian Ashford finally asking someone else for permission. I wish Eleanor could see it.”
Grant’s face hardened.
“Vanessa.”
“Hello, darling.”
“Where are you?”
“Safe.”
“You arranged this?”
“I arranged more than you will ever understand.”
Claire looked toward the camera.
“Who was at the mansion?”
Vanessa laughed softly.
“You still think that question matters.”
“He looked exactly like Grant.”
“He looked enough like Grant in bad lighting, during a storm, while you were frightened. People see what they expect.”
Claire remembered the scar, the voice, the touch.
“Plastic surgery?”
“Partly.”
“Who was he?”
“A man who owes Northbridge everything.”
Grant shouted toward the camera. “You used me.”
Vanessa answered calmly.
“You were useful. Ambitious men usually are.”
“What do you want?”
“The silver key.”
Claire closed her fingers around it.
Vanessa continued.
“Place it on the stone platform, and the door opens.”
Sebastian stepped closer to Claire.
“Do not.”
Vanessa sighed.
“Always controlling her.”
Claire looked up at the camera.
“What does the key open besides this chamber?”
“The first door of every Ashford secret.”
“That means nothing.”
“It opens the Bellweather registry.”
Nathan’s expression changed.
“What registry?”
Sebastian answered before Vanessa could.
“A private ownership system.”
Claire stared at him.
“You knew?”
“I knew the registry existed. I did not know Eleanor possessed a master key.”
Vanessa spoke again.
“The registry identifies the true beneficiaries of more than two hundred shell companies. Politicians, defense contractors, banks, charities, and families whose names appear nowhere in public records.”
“Northbridge,” Claire said.
“Northbridge is only one branch.”
“And you want control.”
“I want what was promised to my family.”
Grant moved closer to the speaker.
“What family?”
A pause followed.
Then Vanessa said, “Ask your father.”
Grant looked toward the console, his face tight.
“My father is dead.”
“No,” Vanessa replied. “Your father learned to disappear.”
Malcolm.
Claire remembered the messages from M.
“Is he there with you?”
Vanessa did not answer.
Daniel removed the maintenance panel completely.
“The shaft leads upward, but we do not know where it exits.”
Vanessa’s voice sharpened.
“You have four minutes before the chamber’s flood system activates.”
Grant looked at the ceiling.
“There is no flood system.”
“Not originally.”
A pipe above them shuddered.
Water began pouring through vents along the walls.
Daniel ordered everyone into the maintenance shaft.
Claire remained near the platform.
Sebastian grabbed her arm.
“Give her the key.”
“You just told me not to.”
“I changed my mind.”
“Why?”
“Because your life matters more than the registry.”
Claire looked into his face.
“Did you forge the Bellweather signature in 1986?”
Water spread around their shoes.
Sebastian’s eyes closed briefly.
“Yes.”
Grant stared at him.
Nathan said nothing.
Claire’s throat tightened.
“Why?”
“My father controlled the trust. He intended to fund Northbridge through your grandmother’s authority. I forged a document to redirect the money into an account I believed I controlled.”
“You believed?”
“The account belonged to Malcolm Hale.”
Grant stepped forward.
“My father?”
“He was my financial investigator.”
“Malcolm worked for you?”
“For a time.”
The chamber filled faster.
Sebastian continued.
“He told me he could expose Northbridge from inside. Instead, he took the funds and became part of it.”
Malcolm’s recording had twisted the truth.
Not entirely false.
Not entirely honest.
Claire looked toward the camera.
Vanessa was using fragments of the past to turn them against one another.
She placed the silver key on the stone platform.
The water stopped.
The circular door opened.
No one moved at first.
Daniel aimed his weapon toward the corridor.
It was empty.
They exited quickly.
Claire turned back for the key.
The stone platform had opened beneath it.
The key was gone.
Vanessa had not needed them to hand it to her.
She had needed Claire to activate the mechanism.
A new object rose from the platform.
A black ledger.
The one Eleanor had hidden.
Claire picked it up.
The first pages listed dates, payments, and coded names.
Near the middle, she found a photograph attached with tape.
It showed Vanessa as a child beside Malcolm Hale.
Grant looked over Claire’s shoulder.
“That’s my father.”
Vanessa was perhaps eight years old.
Malcolm’s hand rested on her shoulder.
On the next page, Eleanor had written:
Vanessa Hale, born 1992. Malcolm’s daughter. Grant’s half-sister.
Grant stepped back.
“No.”
Claire turned the page.
Another note appeared.
Grant does not know.
The speaker crackled once more.
Vanessa’s voice no longer sounded amused.
“Now you understand why I was never going to let him keep you.”
The chamber lights went dark again.
May you like
When they returned, the maintenance corridor beyond the door was empty.
But Grant had disappeared.
