Chapter 11 - The Price of a Child

Claire did not sleep.
By dawn, the mansion had become a temporary command center. Investigators moved through the halls. Digital specialists recovered fragments from the wiped office computer. Lawyers drafted emergency orders against every company connected to Vesper Meridian.
Claire sat in her mother’s old study with the ledger copies spread across the desk.
The bruise on her cheek had darkened.
Her ribs were not fractured, but the doctor warned her against exertion.
She barely heard him.
The entry concerning her pregnancy occupied her mind.
Increase dosage after pregnancy termination.
At seven in the morning, Rosa entered carrying tea.
“You need to rest.”
“I need to remember.”
Rosa placed the tray down.
“Remember what?”
“The week I lost the baby.”
Rosa’s face changed.
Claire noticed.
“You know something.”
“No.”
“Rosa.”
The older woman sat slowly.
“Mr. Hale told the staff not to speak about that week.”
“Why?”
“He said you were emotionally fragile.”
“What happened?”
Rosa twisted her hands together.
“You were ill for several days before the hospital.”
“I remember nausea.”
“You were confused. You called me by your mother’s name.”
Claire felt cold.
“Grant said the pregnancy medication caused it.”
Rosa shook her head.
“One night, I saw Miss Cole leaving the upstairs hall.”
“Vanessa?”
“Yes.”
“Vanessa claimed she first visited the mansion eight months ago.”
“She lied.”
“How long had she been coming?”
“At least two years.”
Claire closed her eyes.
Vanessa had entered her home before Claire even knew her name.
“Did you tell Grant?”
“He said she was consulting privately on a project.”
“Did she enter my bedroom?”
Rosa looked ashamed.
“I saw her carrying a medical bag.”
Claire gripped the desk.
“What night?”
“The night before you were taken to the hospital.”
A knock sounded.
Nathan entered with Daniel.
“We found Dr. Brooks.”
Claire stood.
“Where?”
“At a private airfield. He was preparing to leave the country.”
“Has he confessed?”
“He is requesting immunity.”
Sebastian entered behind them.
“He will receive nothing until he tells us what happened to Claire.”
Nathan placed a recorded interview on the screen.
Dr. Brooks appeared in a gray interrogation room.
He looked smaller than Claire remembered.
Nervous.
Sweating.
An investigator asked, “Did you prescribe medication to Claire Hale during her pregnancy?”
Brooks answered, “Yes.”
“Was the dosage medically appropriate?”
A pause.
“No.”
Claire’s fingers dug into the desk.
“Who instructed you to change it?”
“Vanessa Cole.”
“Did Grant Hale know?”
Brooks swallowed.
“He knew Claire was receiving treatment for anxiety.”
“That was not the question.”
“I never told him the exact compounds.”
“Did he administer them?”
“Sometimes.”
Claire looked away.
Brooks continued.
“Vanessa said the pregnancy created a timing problem.”
“What timing problem?”
“She said Claire would not sign financial documents while preparing for the baby. Grant was considering delaying the Marlow project.”
A new voice asked, “Was the pregnancy deliberately terminated?”
Brooks covered his face.
“I was told to create a medical event.”
Claire felt Sebastian’s hand on her shoulder.
She could not move.
“What does that mean?” the investigator asked.
“I supplied a compound capable of causing uterine complications.”
“Who administered it?”
“I don’t know.”
“Who collected it from you?”
Brooks looked toward the camera.
“Grant Hale.”
Claire turned away from the screen.
No one spoke.
Her father’s hand remained on her shoulder, but she felt impossibly far from everyone in the room.
Grant had collected the drug.
He had given her drinks, vitamins, medication.
He had sat beside her hospital bed while she begged the doctors to save their child.
He had cried.
Or pretended to.
The investigator asked Brooks, “Did Grant understand the purpose of the compound?”
Brooks hesitated.
“Vanessa told me he did.”
“Did he say so himself?”
“No.”
The uncertainty offered no comfort.
Nathan stopped the video.
“Brooks may be shifting blame.”
Claire looked at him.
“Grant collected it.”
“Yes.”
“He gave me medicine.”
“We need his explanation.”
“He had months to explain everything.”
Sebastian’s voice hardened.
“You are not going to the Bellweather station.”
Claire turned toward him.
“Vanessa has Grant and the original archive files.”
“She also wants the ledger.”
“She may know what happened to my child.”
“And she may kill you after you deliver it.”
Claire looked at the silver-key compartment image.
“We don’t have the real key anymore. We don’t have the complete archive. We don’t know where Malcolm is.”
“Then we find them without handing you over.”
Daniel placed a map on the desk.
“The old Bellweather station is an abandoned rail terminal. Multiple entrances, underground service tunnels, poor surveillance coverage.”
“Can you follow me without Vanessa detecting you?”
“Possibly.”
“That means no.”
“It means we prepare.”
Claire looked at the clock.
Four hours until noon.
A digital specialist entered with another discovery.
“We recovered part of the mansion office audio.”
Grant’s computer had automatically stored voice commands despite the wipe.
One clip was dated three days before Claire’s pregnancy ended.
Grant’s voice said, “Schedule delivery from Brooks.”
A second voice responded.
The false Grant.
The impersonator.
“You need to be the one who gives it to her.”
Grant answered, “I’m not doing that.”
The other man said, “Then Marlow dies, your debts become public, and Claire learns about Vanessa.”
Grant remained silent.
The false Grant continued.
“It will look natural. Brooks guarantees it.”
Grant said, “What happens to the baby?”
The recording ended.
Claire stared at the waveform.
“He knew.”
Nathan did not contradict her.
Sebastian’s face became stone.
Daniel checked the file.
“There may be more.”
“Find it,” Claire said.
At eleven thirty, she prepared to leave for Bellweather station.
Sebastian blocked the doorway.
“I cannot allow this.”
“You cannot stop me.”
“I can place you under protection.”
“You mean confinement.”
“I mean keeping you alive.”
Claire looked at him.
“Mother tried to expose Northbridge. You stopped her because you were afraid. Then she died with evidence hidden everywhere, leaving recordings for the day the danger returned.”
Sebastian flinched.
“I won’t repeat your choice.”
“My choice was to protect my family.”
“No. Your choice was to decide for everyone else.”
She moved past him.
Nathan handed her a small communication device.
“The ledger in the case is a replica.”
Claire nodded.
Daniel’s team would enter through two service tunnels after she made contact.
At eleven fifty-eight, Claire stepped into the abandoned Bellweather station.
Rainwater dripped through holes in the roof.
A single chair stood beneath the old departure board.
Grant sat tied to it.
His face was bruised.
Vanessa stood beside him holding a pistol.
“Right on time,” she said.
Claire raised the case.
“Where is Malcolm?”
Vanessa smiled.
“Watching.”
“Did Grant kill my child?”
Grant struggled against the ropes.
“Claire, listen to me.”
Vanessa pressed the weapon against his temple.
“He collected the drug.”
“I know.”
“He brought it home.”
“I know.”
“He poured it into your tea.”
Claire’s knees nearly failed.
Grant shouted, “I did not know what it was.”
Vanessa laughed.
“You asked what would happen to the baby.”
“I thought they wanted to make her ill enough to delay the signing.”
Claire stared at him.
“You were willing to poison me.”
Grant’s eyes filled with tears.
“I was desperate.”
“For money.”
“For the company. For everything I had built.”
“Our child was part of everything.”
“I know.”
“No. You know now.”
Vanessa held out her free hand.
“The ledger.”
Claire placed the case on the floor.
“Release him first.”
“You still want to save him?”
“I want him alive long enough to answer for what he did.”
Vanessa’s smile faded.
A train horn sounded in the distance, though the station had been abandoned for decades.
Then the old departure board flickered to life.
One line appeared.
CLAIRE ASHFORD, PLATFORM 3.
Vanessa looked upward in surprise.
A man’s voice echoed through the station speakers.
“Do not give her the ledger.”
May you like
Vanessa’s face lost all color.
“Father?”
