Chapter 10 - The Sister He Never Knew

They found blood near the maintenance shaft.

Not enough to suggest a fatal injury.

Enough to indicate a struggle.

Daniel followed the trail toward an upper tunnel while Claire, Sebastian, and Nathan were escorted outside by police officers who had finally reopened the sealed entrance.

The rain had weakened to a steady gray drizzle.

Grant was gone.

Vanessa was gone.

The silver key was gone.

The ledger remained in Claire’s hands.

Nathan immediately sealed it inside an evidence bag.

“We need copies before anyone else touches this.”

Sebastian looked toward the police command vehicle.

“Not local police.”

The senior officer heard him.

“This is an active crime scene.”

Sebastian answered coldly. “Your department allowed a suspect to escape from my daughter’s mansion and then permitted another abduction beneath a restricted construction site.”

The officer bristled.

“We were responding to multiple false reports and a coordinated power failure.”

“Exactly.”

Claire stepped between them.

“Fighting over jurisdiction helps Vanessa.”

Both men fell silent.

Nathan arranged for the ledger to be photographed under independent supervision. The first readable pages contained decades of transactions coded by initials and symbols.

One code appeared repeatedly.

B.R.

Bellweather Registry.

Another appeared beside payments to medical companies, security firms, and political organizations.

M.H.

Malcolm Hale.

Grant’s father had not merely joined Northbridge.

He had helped rebuild it.

Claire looked at the childhood photograph of Vanessa.

“Why did she become Grant’s mistress?”

Nathan’s expression showed disgust.

“Manipulation. Control. Access.”

Sebastian studied the image.

“Grant may not be Malcolm’s biological son.”

Claire looked at him.

“What?”

“Malcolm married Grant’s mother when Grant was four. Public records list him as the father, but earlier records are missing.”

“Then Vanessa may not be related to him by blood.”

“Possibly.”

Claire shook her head.

“That does not make anything better.”

“No.”

Her phone vibrated.

An unknown number had sent a video.

Grant sat in a dark room, tied to a chair.

Vanessa stood behind him.

She had changed from the blue dress into black clothing. Her hair was pulled back. She looked nothing like the polished consultant who had shared Claire’s breakfast table.

“Claire,” Vanessa said into the camera. “The ledger you found is incomplete.”

Grant struggled against the restraints.

Vanessa placed one hand on his shoulder.

“He believed I loved him. That was useful. He believed you would forgive anything. That was even more useful.”

Grant looked at the camera.

“Do not give her the ledger.”

Vanessa struck him across the face.

Claire flinched despite herself.

“You will bring the ledger to the old Bellweather station tomorrow at noon,” Vanessa continued. “You will come alone.”

Sebastian took the phone.

“No.”

Vanessa smiled.

“Sebastian. Still alive after all these years.”

“Where is Malcolm?”

“Closer than you think.”

“Let Grant go.”

“Why? You never cared what happened to Malcolm’s children before.”

Sebastian’s face tightened.

Vanessa leaned toward the camera.

“Ask him about the Winter Program, Claire.”

The video ended.

Claire looked at her father.

“What was the Winter Program?”

Sebastian glanced at Nathan.

Nathan knew.

That realization angered Claire more than the answer itself.

“You both know.”

Nathan spoke carefully.

“It was an unofficial witness relocation effort.”

“For whom?”

“Families connected to Northbridge.”

Sebastian continued.

“Your mother wanted to remove children from households where parents were involved in trafficking, illegal testing, or financial crimes.”

“Grant and Vanessa?”

“Possibly.”

“Did you separate them?”

“I approved funding. I did not manage individual cases.”

Vanessa’s accusation echoed.

You never cared what happened to Malcolm’s children.

Claire looked toward the ambulance where Grant had sat only an hour earlier.

“Could Grant have been placed with another family?”

“Yes.”

“And Malcolm later reclaimed him?”

“We need the records.”

“Where are they?”

“The Northbridge Archive.”

“The files Grant took from beneath the mansion.”

Nathan nodded.

Vanessa had orchestrated the assault, the false transfer, and the archive theft to recover records of her own childhood.

But why frame Claire as unstable? Why steal forty-seven million dollars? Why use Grant so intimately and cruelly?

Claire opened the copied ledger images on Nathan’s tablet.

One payment from 1998 was marked Winter Program.

Recipient: E. Cole.

Vanessa’s adoptive surname.

Another listed G. Hale.

Claire enlarged the notes.

Status: Memory protocol completed.

“What is memory protocol?”

Sebastian looked genuinely confused.

“I have never seen that term.”

Nathan searched the pages.

“It appears beside payments to medical facilities.”

Claire remembered Grant claiming he could not recall the Marlow chamber photograph.

“Someone erased parts of his memory.”

Sebastian shook his head.

“That kind of procedure did not exist.”

“Not perfectly. But drugs, trauma, conditioning, false memory reinforcement.”

Nathan looked troubled.

“The payments continued until Grant was twenty-one.”

Claire found another entry.

Subject C.A.

Her own initials.

A payment had been made to Dr. Lionel Brooks two years earlier.

The month of her miscarriage.

Claire’s skin turned cold.

“I’m in the ledger.”

Sebastian took the tablet.

The entry read:

C.A. shows resistance. Increase dosage after pregnancy termination.

Claire stopped breathing.

Pregnancy termination.

Not miscarriage.

Her child had not died naturally.

Someone had caused it.

The world narrowed to the tablet screen.

Sebastian gripped her shoulders.

“Claire.”

She pulled away.

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Did Mother know this program used drugs?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did Nathan?”

“No,” Nathan said immediately.

Claire stared at the payment date.

Grant had taken her to Dr. Brooks.

Grant had given her medication.

Even if Vanessa had manipulated him, even if Malcolm had controlled the network, Grant had been beside Claire when their baby died.

Had he known?

A second message arrived.

May you like

This one contained only an address and a sentence.

Bring the ledger, and I will tell you whether your husband killed your child.
