Chapter 12 - The Ghost in the Station

Malcolm Hale appeared on the upper platform.

He was older than the photographs, thin and white-haired, but Grant’s resemblance to him was unmistakable around the eyes.

Vanessa lowered her weapon slightly.

“You said you would remain hidden.”

Malcolm descended the rusted staircase.

“I said you would follow instructions.”

“I brought Claire.”

“You also lost the silver key.”

“I activated the chamber.”

“And allowed Claire to recover the ledger.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“I can still take it.”

Malcolm looked at the case near Claire’s feet.

“That is not the ledger.”

Vanessa turned sharply toward Claire.

Malcolm continued descending.

“Sebastian taught Nathan Mercer to prepare substitutions. Predictable, but effective.”

Grant stared at him.

“You’re alive.”

Malcolm looked at him without warmth.

“So are you. Despite your best efforts.”

“You had me abducted.”

“I removed you before Vanessa’s impersonator destroyed what remained of your usefulness.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You approved the mansion plan.”

“I approved pressure. Not spectacle.”

“She refused to sign.”

“So you ordered six blows to her face and trapped Rosa Alvarez in a pantry.”

Claire watched Vanessa.

The absence of denial confirmed everything.

Malcolm reached the station floor.

“Your appetite for cruelty always exceeds your discipline.”

Vanessa raised the pistol toward him.

“You chose Grant every time.”

Malcolm glanced at his son.

“I chose neither of you.”

Grant pulled against the ropes.

“What do you want from Claire?”

“The Bellweather Registry.”

Claire said, “You already have the silver key.”

“The key opens access. Claire is the living authorization.”

“Why?”

“Because Eleanor changed the registry before she died. Only her direct heir can unlock the final records.”

Claire remembered the five childhood symbols.

Her memory opens the second door.

“You need me alive.”

“Yes.”

Vanessa looked at Malcolm.

“You told me once the registry was open, everything would belong to us.”

“Nothing belongs to people who cannot control themselves.”

Vanessa’s hand tightened around the pistol.

Malcolm continued.

“You seduced Grant because you hated him. You remained because you enjoyed watching Claire trust you both. That was never part of the plan.”

Grant looked sick.

Vanessa laughed bitterly.

“He had the life I should have had.”

Grant stared at her.

“We were children.”

“You were taken to a wealthy family. I was left with Evelyn Cole, who sold every document Father sent her and spent the money on drugs.”

Malcolm showed no emotion.

“The placements were compromised.”

“You never came for me.”

“You became useful where you were.”

The cruelty in his answer struck even Claire.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with tears, but her weapon remained steady.

“You promised Northbridge would be mine.”

“I promised you a place in it.”

Sirens sounded faintly outside.

Malcolm looked toward Claire.

“Daniel Cross will enter through the western tunnel in ninety seconds.”

Claire’s pulse jumped.

“How do you know?”

“Because one of his men reports to me.”

Daniel’s team had been compromised.

Malcolm held out his hand.

“Come with me, and Grant lives.”

Claire looked toward Grant.

“You expect me to trade myself for him?”

“No. I expect you to trade yourself for the truth about Eleanor.”

Sebastian appeared at the far entrance.

He held no weapon.

“Do not believe him.”

Claire’s breath caught.

He was supposed to remain outside.

Malcolm smiled.

“Sebastian.”

The two men faced each other across the abandoned station.

Grant looked between them.

“You knew he was alive.”

Sebastian answered, “I suspected.”

“Since when?”

“Since the night Eleanor died.”

Claire turned toward her father.

“You said you never proved who changed her medication.”

“I never proved it in court.”

Malcolm’s smile disappeared.

Sebastian continued.

“But I found his fingerprint on a vial in the private clinic.”

Claire looked at Malcolm.

“You killed my mother.”

“No,” Malcolm replied. “I offered her a choice.”

Sebastian’s voice shook with rage.

“You poisoned her.”

“She had already been exposed to Northbridge compounds at Marlow. Her illness began there.”

Claire remembered the workers who became sick.

“Mother’s cancer?”

“Not cancer,” Malcolm said. “A rare autoimmune collapse caused by experimental material stored beneath the site.”

Sebastian stepped closer.

“You changed her medication to accelerate it.”

“I prevented a prolonged death.”

Claire felt nausea rise.

“And the archive?”

“Eleanor would not reveal where she hid the ledger.”

“So you killed her before she could expose you.”

Malcolm looked at Claire.

“Your mother was more complicated than Sebastian admits. She helped create the Winter Program.”

“To protect children.”

“To study whether memory could be altered after trauma.”

Grant’s face changed.

“My memory.”

“You were one of the subjects.”

Vanessa whispered, “And me?”

Malcolm looked at her.

“You were the control.”

Her face collapsed.

Grant had received altered memories.

Vanessa had been forced to remember everything.

Claire understood then why Vanessa hated him.

Malcolm had turned their childhood suffering into an experiment and their adult lives into tools.

The station lights flickered.

Daniel’s voice sounded faintly through Claire’s earpiece.

“We are compromised. Move toward the eastern exit.”

Malcolm heard it too.

He raised a small remote.

Metal gates dropped across the eastern and western tunnels.

Sebastian ran toward Claire.

Vanessa fired.

The shot echoed through the station.

Sebastian staggered.

Claire screamed.

He fell to one knee, blood spreading across his shoulder.

Grant threw his weight sideways, knocking the chair into Vanessa. The pistol slid across the floor.

Claire ran toward her father.

Malcolm grabbed the case and opened it.

When he saw the replica ledger, anger twisted his face.

“You wasted my time.”

Police sirens grew louder.

Vanessa reached for the pistol.

Grant caught her wrist.

They struggled.

Malcolm moved toward a maintenance door.

Claire pressed her hands against Sebastian’s wound.

“Stay with me.”

“I’m all right.”

“You were shot.”

“Shoulder.”

Malcolm reached the doorway.

Before disappearing, he looked back at Claire.

“The original ledger contains your mother’s final confession.”

Claire shouted, “What confession?”

He smiled.

“She did not hide you from Northbridge.”

The maintenance door began to close.

May you like

“She created you for it.”

Then Malcolm vanished into the darkness.
